If you were to ask Hannah Read what Lomelda means, you'd probably end up with some kind of non-answer and a new topic. It is a guarded secret reserved for those who really pry. It is a high school attempt at describing something vast and powerful yet uniquely quiet and complex. And it is ever-changing. Lomelda is about memory, intimacy, and the tragedies of distance. As a band, it has appeared in several forms over the years, but always, to Hannah, Lomelda has been about discovering friendship and connection. Close collaborators have become closer friends. And when you see Lomelda, when you hear it, it is apparent that Hannah cares deeply about the connection made with the people on stage, the connection with you.

Guided By Voices Share "Low Flying Perfection" Video On Brooklyn Vegan | October U.S. Tour

GUIDED BY VOICES SHARE "LOW FLYING PERFECTION" VIDEO VIA BROOKLYN VEGAN

OCTOBER U.S. TOUR

'HOW DO YOU SPELL HEAVEN' OUT NOWWatch & Share: Guided By Voices - "Low Flying Perfection"
Listen & Share: Guided By Voices - 'How Do You Spell Heaven'
Listen & Share: Guided By Voices - "Just To Show You"Brooklyn Vegan has shared the video for "Low Flying Perfection", the 13th track off of their recently released LP "How Do You Spell Heaven". Last Saturday the band played Pitchfork's Octfest in Brooklyn and will continue to tour the U.S. through October.

The video was directed by Sean Cannon and Chris Witzke.  Cannon, host of WFPK’s The Guestlist  radio show / podcast from Louisville, states:  "The narrative for this video hit me all at once, with most of the scenes fully formed in my head. You don't always get that lucky. I realized pretty quickly the visuals would match the intensity, immediacy, and intimacy of "Low Flying Perfection." We rushed out to the woods armed with nothing but a camera and an ax. Two hours later, Chris and I captured this story.”

Guided By Voices is on a roll. You could argue, but please don't because I have a headache, that GBV is never not on a roll, that Robert Pollard's output plows past the word "prolific" like prolific is standing still in a snowbank; and that's true, but this new version of the band (Doug Gillard, Bobby Bare Jr, Mark Shue, Kevin March) has given Pollard new tools to complement his song-hammer. Thus, ergo, quod erat demonstrandum: roll.

Hot on the heels of the smothered-in-plaudits double album August By Cake comes this hot and heavy fifteen-tune long player, a melody-dense thwack to the earholes that will both energize you and deplete your body of its remaining music-appreciation enzymes. Recorded by the band in New York, and by Bob in Ohio, How Do You Spell Heaven capitalizes on the current incarnation's tour-buffed shine without sacrificing eternal GBV verities such as but not limited to: off-kilter rhythmic jolts; krazy chords; purposefully imperfect harmonies; and fragmented structures that start and stop on a coin of small denomination and go somewhere else, and quickly.

For example: Leadoff track "The Birthday Democrats" features a surfeit of pop hooks and swaggering sure-footed wordplay before dissolving like a perfect dream into Beatles-esque sound collage. "King 007" starts off like an acoustic demo from Tommy before shifting gears into a galloping riff-driven hyperspace guitar battle, before pivoting back to some kind of weirdo hybrid of the two… and then stops short just when you think you've got the thing pinned down. "Pearly Gates Smoke Machine" opens like the best thing Marc Bolan ne
There's more, much more, but you know that already. The easiest, laziest way to sum up Guided By Voices' latest album, the move we can't fail to resist making, is the most obvious: How do you spell heaven? Shout it from the rafters: G-B-V!

The National Release 'Sleep Well Beast' Out Today!

THE NATIONAL RELEASE SLEEP WELL BEAST OUT TODAY!
WATCH THE BAND PERFORM LIVE ON THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT
IMMERSE YOURSELF IN  THE NEW YORK TIMES VR DOCUMENTARY  "THE NATIONAL: SOMETHING OUT OF NOTHING"

PRAISE FOR
SLEEP WELL BEAST "Elegant melancholia isn't enough for the National anymore. On its seventh album, "Sleep Well Beast," its new songs have more rhythmic ferment and melodic crosscurrents; they translate emotional complexity into musical counterpoint."-The New York Times
"Over the past 16 years this veteran indie quintet has quietly become one of the biggest bands in the country, and with their seventh album they've achieved the rare feat of releasing one of their best - if not the best - collection to date."
-Variety
"The National's best LP yet. Haunted by Mordant beauty, rattled paranoia. ****" - Rolling Stone
"The National is back when we need them most...on their sonically expansive seventh outing, [they] have come roaring back with their most ambitious, urgent album yet." -USA TODAY
"The National's upcoming full-length, Sleep Well Beast, is shaping up to be the best album the band has done." - NPR
"'Sleep Well Beast' is the band's fifth album in a row that feels essential, connected, and unflinching." -AV CLUB

"The National are having a moment, however unassumingly, at the top of whatever is left of serious rock music." - Magnet
"Sleep Well Beast is a towering achievement." - Under the Radar
"This seventh record from the aughts' indie superstars promises a feast of grandiose rock." - New York Magazine
"Sleep Well Beast kicks harder than any National album in more than a decade." Stereogum
"This generation's glum-funny heir to Leonard Cohen, Matt Berninger, delivers unusually lucid lyrics as his now-venerable Brooklyn band experiments with drum machines and snarling guitar solos." - The Atlantic
"...The National might be the closest thing America has ever had to The Smiths: a dexterous guitar band with a magnetically morose frontman who's able to complain about the government and his love life in the same breath with the same eloquence and the same dark humor." - Consequence of Sound
"While performing, Berninger is an inscrutable and arresting presence...The work is hard and serious. For anyone who has ever found herself mired in this sort of situation-apathy mixed with deep hunger-Berninger's echoing of it can feel like a public service." - The New Yorker
