Hole's Patty Schemel Publishes Memoir
DA CAPO PRESS TO PUBLISH MEMOIRBY HOLE’S PATTY SCHEMEL
Hit So Hard: A MemoirTo Hit Bookstores October 31, 2017
“Reading about the myriad ways Hole drummer Patty Schemel—‘the best musician in that band’ as her pal Kurt Cobain put it—brutalized herself with addiction can feel like a kind of sadistic experience. And yet, Hit So Hard feels ultimately uplifting and hopeful, in part because its author so fully and completely appreciates what she’s survived in order to have written it. Hit So Hard is a harrowing but heartwarming read. Schemel’s made the years she got that others didn’t count. And it shows.” — Lizzy Goodman, author of Meet Me in the Bathroom: Rebirth and Rock and Roll in New York City 2001-2011

Hit So Hard: A Memoir—the first book by drummer Patty Schemel, best known for her work with Holein the 90s—will be published in hardcover by Da Capo Press on October 31, 2017. Hit So Hardfollows, and expands upon, the acclaimed documentary film of the same name about Schemel released in 2011.
A drummer who was at the epicenter of the Seattle music scene in the early 90s, Patty Schemel was an integral member of Hole (suggested to frontwoman Courtney Love by her husband, Kurt Cobain, an avid fan of Schemel’s drumming), and helped to create the seminal album Live Through This. Hit So Hard chronicles the coming of age of a musician and an addict, on and off the road, in a band plagued by tragedy during the last great era of rock ’n’ roll excess. While never losing her sense of humor,Schemel—one of the first female drummers to make it big in the music world, as well as one of the first women in rock to come out publicly as gay (in the pages of Rolling Stone, no less!)—intimately documents the events surrounding her dramatic descent from festival headliner into a life of homelessness and crime on the streets of Los Angeles, and her difficult but rewarding path to sobriety after more than twenty serious attempts to get clean.
Hit So Hard is a first-hand account of everything that happened behind the curtain. It sheds light on Kurt Cobain’s final, fateful drug intervention; the backstage antics of Hole while they defied expectation following the sudden deaths of Cobain and bassist Kristen Pfaff and toured in support of Live Through This; Schemel’s writing of, and subsequent dramatic exit from, the recording of the band’s celebrated third album, Celebrity Skin; and countless encounters with some of rock ’n’ roll’s biggest names of the early 90s. But at its core, Hit So Hard is a survival story, told in witty detail by a woman who literally saw and experienced it all. Whether it was coming out in small town Washington state in the 80s, weathering all variety of sexism as one of the only famous female drummers of her time, or battling the intense drug addiction that threatened to take everything she had—including her life—many times,Schemel still managed to come out the other side. A testament to the enduring power of the musicSchemel helped create, as well as an important documentation of the drug culture that threatened to destroy it, Hit So Hard is ultimately the story of one amazing woman’s ability to prevail against all odds, even when she herself believed she wouldn’t make it out alive.
Patty Schemel is an American drummer, songwriter, and comedian best known for her work with the platinum-selling band Hole. She is on the board of the Rock ’n’ Roll Camp for Girls, a non-profit organization that teaches girls all over the world that it’s okay to be loud. She continues to perform, teach, and tour, currently with the band Upset, and lives in Los Angeles with her wife and daughter.
(Photo credit: Darcy Hemley)Early praise for Hit So Hard…“Patty Schemel has lived a million lives and come out the other side. An amazing story, amazing book.” — Mark Lanegan, musician and author of I Am the Wolf
“Often harrowing, frequently heartrending, and always insightful, Hit So Hard is far more than rock myth-making or a redemption story. In looking back unflinchingly at the literal highs and crushing lows of her life, Schemel's yielded a complex, compellingly readable memoir that possesses a truth and humanity few books of its kind ever truly capture.”— Bob Mehr, New York Times bestselling author of Trouble Boys: The True Story of the Replacements
“Patty Schemel’s drums have always been a wake-up call, the punctuation that makes serious the wild streams of punk consciousness her bands have expressed. This book is a wake-up call, too: a clearly considered, deeply honest look back at a rock scene that's often been mourned but rarely truly understood. Schemel writes most honestly about herself: she spares nothing and no one as she traces the path of addiction as it intersects with the privileges and costs of young fame. A must-read about rock ’n’ roll realities.”— Ann Powers, NPR Music Critic and author of Good Booty: Love and Sex, Black and White, Body and Soul in American Music
“Hit So Hard is a compulsive read about the best worst times of a music scene torn apart by darkness and overshadowed by myth. Schemel writes with clear-eyed bravery about the chronic disease of addiction and offers hope for anyone still struggling to survive the ’90s.” — Jillian Lauren, author of Some Girls and Everything You Ever Wanted
“[A] heartbreaking memoir…Schemel’s recounting is bluntly terrifying and provides invaluable insight into the ravages of addiction—and just as importantly, the possibility of recovery…A must-read for any grunge fan.”— Publishers Weekly

Wyclef Jean has released his song “Borrowed Time” via USA Today . The track appears on his forthcoming album Carnival III: The Fall and Rise of a Refugee, outSeptember 15 via Heads Music / Legacy Recordings. "Borrowed Time" marries together music, science and technology with sounds recorded by the Juno satellite, which has been orbiting Jupiter and taking pictures, video and recording sounds. NASA's Juno project is collaborating with Apple to inspire people of all ages to engage and appreciate the arts and sciences. As part of the collaboration, artists are provided with sounds from Jupiter to incorporate into their music. Listen to “Borrowed Time” and pre-order the album here.
"All around us, nature is in harmony,” says Scott Bolton, the astrophysicist and Principal Investigator behind Juno. “Borrowed Time is a perfect example of the power possible when we blend the arts and sciences."
Wyclef speaks on the creation and inspiration behind “Borrowed Time”: ”I worked together with Scott Bolton who developed this, so I got to geek out a bit. The craziest part for me was that no human being had heard these particular sounds yet. I freaked out when I heard them. To me, we are all vibrations of light and sound. I've done a lot of humbling things in my career, including working closely with Michael Jackson. I wish MJ was here to see us create songs with sonics from the Universe"
Carnival III: The Fall and Rise of a Refugee features contributions from Emeli Sandé, Supah Mario, The Knocks, and Lunch Money Lewis. The release coincides with the 20thanniversary of Wyclef’s critically acclaimed debut album The Carnival .
"My Carnival albums have always been about celebrating music culture from all parts of the world and Carnival III is no different,” says Wyclef. “It's outside the box. There’s genre-bending. There’s new talent on there. Carnival III is more than just an album. It’s a celebration of what I love about music: discovery, diversity and artistry for art’s sake... It's about putting music together that will outlive me and live on for generations to come that is full of emotion, vibration and fun. Get ready."
The music that Wyclef Jean has written, performed, and produced — both as a solo superstar and as founder and guiding member of the Fugees — has been a consistently powerful, pop cultural force for over two decades. In 1996, the Fugees released their monumental album The Score. As a solo artist, he has released six albums that have sold nearly nine million copies worldwide, including his 1997 debut The Carnival and 2000’s aptly titled The Eclectic: 2 Sides II a Book.
In the latest news, Wyclef has been named the grand marshal of the “Apache Warrior 400 presented by Lucas Oil” Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at Dover International Speedway on Sunday, Oct. 1. Jean will give the command for 40 of NASCAR’s top drivers to start their engines before the first elimination race of the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.

The 11-song set was produced by McPherson and Dan Molad (Lucius, Here We Go Magic), and was recorded at the Historic RCA Studio B™ in Nashville, TN, which celebrates its 60th Anniversary this year. Undivided Heart & Soul is McPherson’s first studio album in nearly three years and follows his critically acclaimed Let The Good Times Roll (2015), which Rolling Stone praised as “timeless, forward-thinking rock & roll.” The new, soul-baring album is a snapshot of his creative process bringing the record to life, a journey filled with fear and change, then boldness, and, eventually catharsis. The album features collaborations with Parker Millsap, Butch Walker, and Aaron Lee Tasjan. In addition to his longtime band members Doug Corcoran on guitar, Raynier Jacob Jacildo on keys, Jimmy Sutton on bass, and Jason Smay on drums, the album also features guest appearances by Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs, Greenhornes), Jess Wolfe & Holly Laessig of Lucius, and Nicole Atkins. Rolling Stone Country premiered the second track from the new album, “Crying’s Just A Thing That You Do,” HERE, calling it a “Jerry Lee Lewis-in-the-key-of T. Rex rocker” and “some fearless and flawless rock & roll.” Of the record, they go on to add, “From the pure, jittery rock & roll of ‘Crying's Just a Thing That You Do’ to some more personal, sentimental moments, Undivided Heart & Soul is a record that sounds full of vital urgency because it was never once dialed in. Rather, it takes true effort to make something effortless.” NPR Music previously premiered the video for the album’s first single, “Lucky Penny,” calling McPherson a "supreme rock reinventor" and stating, "There's a certain fugitive feel to the sound [of]Undivided Heart & Soul – McPherson's mastery of rock and soul fundamentals is beyond question, but his voice moves in wild ways on these songs, and the band exudes a new kind of risky energy. JD McPherson has said the process of making this album pushed him hard. That's a good thing; he's crossing some new lines on the highway." The video depicts McPherson and his band performing the song at RCA Studio B and was directed by George Salisbury (Flaming Lips, Nathaniel Rateliff) and can be seen HERE. Undivided Heart & Soul will be available digitally, as well as compact disc, and vinyl and is now available for pre-order HERE. Prior to writing and recording the new album, McPherson moved his family from their longtime home of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma to the burgeoning artist community of East Nashville, TN. His decision was based on opportunity and one he was reluctant to make, but notes the profound influence the city has had on his new work. “Up to this point, I thought I knew what I was doing with songwriting, that I don’t do this or that,” says McPherson. After collaborating with multiple artists in the scene, he began to experiment, exploring personal themes and injecting more of himself into his work (including a co-write on the album with his wife Mandy). Opening up his process was no easy task. “I was having nightmares every night, thinking, ‘Wow, they’re going to hate this.” With a group of songs taking shape, McPherson and crew scheduled studio time to begin work on the album. After initial tracking began, it quickly became apparent that the sessions were not going to work, bringing his momentum to a halt. At the invitation of his friend and longtime supporter Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, who was also recording at the time, McPherson, Homme, and his Queens bandmate Dean Fertita jammed together over a weekend in Los Angeles. They played around with some songs, with Homme pushing McPherson outside of his comfort zone in a no-stakes environment. McPherson calls the getaway “the most fun I’ve had since I was 15 years old” and returned to Nashville with a clear head, internal filters successfully stifled, and ready to move forward with a new co-producer in Dan Molad (also the drummer for the band Lucius). “There’s a pretty broad gap in our tastes, what we do and what we’re into,” McPherson says of Molad. Where McPherson is as likely to lean on The Cramps as he is Irma Thomas for inspiration, Molad’s left-field production suggestions influenced a new perspective on his sound. “We ended up learning a lot from each other, and he did a lot of stuff I’d have never thought to do.” The legendary RCA Studio B was fundamental to the creation of the "Nashville Sound," and the ghosts of some of the greatest songs in history live within its walls: Elvis Presley’s “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” and Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You," among them. Since the facility is a working museum by day and offers public tours, the entirety of McPherson’s workspace had to be reset at night: Loading in all equipment in the late afternoon after the final tour was completed and working through the night. During the album closer, “Let’s Get Out Of Here While We’re Young,” McPherson sputters “We’ve worn out all the songs we’ve sung.” This is not a statement McPherson takes lightly. “This record was difficult for me to make, difficult to write, difficult to record. It took a lot for me to say that I can’t force these songs to be the way people are expecting.” McPherson says. Undivided Heart & Soul is statement record, one that asserts McPherson as he is now, battle-weary but stronger than ever. JD McPherson has also announced his initial North American tour dates in support of Undivided Heart & Soul. The band will be in Madison, WI tonight and will also appear at the American Legion Hall in Nashville, TN next Thursday night during the Americana Festival. Photo Credit: Maclay HeriotSydney’s Middle Kids have spent the best part of the summer in the US playing shows around the country and putting the finishing touches on their debut record, slated for release in early 2018. The band wowed crowds from Lollapalooza in Chicago to the Celebrate Brooklyn! Summer Series in New York City, living up to hype previously established by outstanding singles "Edge of Town" and "Your Love" and proving why they are poised to be one of the most notable break-out bands of the year. The band will conclude an eventful tour at Austin City Limits in October. All dates are listed below.
As part of Amazon Acoustics, an Amazon Original playlist feature, Middle Kids covered Blink-182’s "All The Small Things,” turning the pop punk classic to a sad country ballad. Langhorne Slim is no stranger to the road - Rolling Stone has noted he has "made a name for himself with insightful songwriting and off-the-rails live shows" - so it's no surprise that he will be touring throughout 2017 and into next year (and beyond). The current tour kicks off September 16 in Bristol, VA at the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Festival and concludes back in Virginia on September 30 for the Devil's Backbone Hoopla in Roseland. Highlights include Sixth and I in Washington D.C., Union Transfer in Philly and a stop at New York City's Bowery Ballroom on September 26, each of which will feature the band that recorded Lost At Last Vol. 1. Complete list of dates below with more to be announced soon.
The upcoming Lost At Last Vol. 1 is the follow up to 2015's The Spirit Moves (Dualtone) which The Guardian praised for its "forehead vein bulging, raw and raucous delivery." Lost At Last Vol. 1 was produced by Kenny Siegal, Malachi DeLorenzo and Langhorne Slim and was recorded at Panoramic House Studio in Marin County, CA.
Langhorne Slim has enjoyed a long successful career dating back to his debut EP, Electric Love Letter. NPR has labeled him a "supercharged folksinger" while he has likened his music to "country punk." He hails from New Hope, PA and when not on the road he currently resides in Nashville, TN. Langhorne has appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman and Conan and has played numerous festivals including Newport Folk Fest, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. Lost At Last Vol. 1marks his sixth studio album.
