One of Norway’s most acclaimed, influential and vital artists, Hanne Hukkelberg's 5th album ’Trust’ is set for release October 20th later this year. via Propeller Recordings.
'The Whip’ (the first single to be lifted from new album Trust) observed the filtered pursuit of perfection, while ‘IRL’ cautioned the constant connection and the loss of self to cyber. ‘Embroidery’ takes things back to relative basics, placing a focus on her friendships, and how important patience can be - both in her musical career, and her life in general.
‘Embroidery’ was written for revered Norwegian singer/songwriter Emilie Nicolas, who also features on the track, after Hukkelberg noticed similarities in their person and process. “It’s about us, and our friendship; about how difficult it is to hold on to this profession and to be strong and patient in your music, and your work, and your life”, she explains.
Written in Berlin alongside longstanding collaborator and band member Mai Elise Solberg, ‘Embroidery’ spins pop convention on its head, blending curious samples and brooding synths, with experimental percussive motifs.
"I found myself lying on the wooden floor, under my table, writing the lyrics and melody to this song. I was fascinated by the squeaky sounds in the floor – which you can hear in the final recording – and the bell-ish sound is from the big iron stairs in the apartment we were staying at in Berlin. The vocal sample at the beginning of the song is taken from ‘My Devils’ – a track on my last album, ‘Featherbrain’ (2012) – and you can also hear my grandmother’s old piano in the recording.”
A rising star in her own right, Emilie Nicolas credits Hanne as one of her idols and main influences when starting her own career: "I’ve always admired Hanne's music and it was so nice to be part of this song. I’m honoured to sing alongside my first and most significant idol.
Speaking a little more on the collaboration, Hukkelberg said: “I heard Emilie’s songs on SoundCloud a few years ago, and was just totally stunned; it was the most amazing music I’d heard in a long time. I messaged her on Facebook, and it turned out that she was actually a massive fan of mine, so we were just in love with each other for a while there, and still are. The collaboration with Emilie, and just listening to her music, was so inspiring and greatly influenced the new album.”
‘Embroidery' is lifted from Hanne Hukkelberg’s fifth studio album ’Trust' – out October 20th, 2017 – which joins a nationally adored and internationally acclaimed back catalogue including ‘Featherbrain’ (2012), ‘Blood From A Stone’ (2009) and Norwegian Grammy Award-winning LP ‘Rykestrasse 68’ (2006).
Spanning more than a decade, her career is celebrated by the likes of Pitchfork, BBC, KCRW, The Guardian, MOJO, Uncut, The Quietus, Drowned In Sound, The Line Of Best Fit and Clash.

The video was written and conceived by Serge Pizzornoand features the three-time Emmy Award Nominated Game Of Thrones actressLena Headey, who plays Queen Cersei in the show. It sees Lena meddling with the occult in a ploy to bring King Richard III back from the dead, whose body was buried in Leicester.

Brother-and-sister duo Tennyson (AKA Luke & Tess) have announced their new Uh Oh! EP outSeptember 28th via OWSLA. The 6-track EP marks their debut full project on the label, led by first single "Cry Bird" featuring vocals from Luke. Their unique sound, avant garde production and captivating live shows earned them the attention of Skrillex, leading to a collaboration on Skrillex's ethereal "Stranger" Remix and signing to OWSLA.
Tess & Luke began making music when they were kids, covering bands like Weezer. By age twelve Luke discovered his formidable talent as a keyboardist and released two albums. During their high school years in Edmonton, Alberta they moonlighted playing Beatles covers while Luke refined his skill as a beat-maker. Today Luke uses everyday sounds like the nagging 'ding' of a car seatbelt alarm to craft intricate electronic pop that is both catchy and daringly experimental, while Tess's masterful drumming manages to hold the songs in from floating away on their own cosmic vibes. The recipients of widespread critical acclaim, including two playlisted singles at BBC 6music, DJ Mag’s Album of the Month, and the coveted “Album Of The Month” slot at Rough Trade, Hercules & Love Affair release their fourth studio album Omnion today – out via Big Beat Records (LISTEN HERE).
Renowned for their exuberant stage show and Andy Butler's knack for elegant and timely productions, Hercules & Love Affair have - unconsciously - hit the zeitgeist with their latest album - eleven songs sparkling with faith and tolerance in response to our troubling times.
“Sometimes songs are born out of an intense moment that has nothing to do with club music,” explains Hercules main manAndy Butler. “…I’m not just a ‘head’ (read techno-head, house-head, disco-head)….I’m touched just as much by, say, Sinead O’Connor accompanied only by a guitar, singing an intensely spirited message.”
Singles to date – “Controller” feat. The Horrors’ Faris Badwan, title track “Omnion” feat. Sharon Van Etten, and the latest “Rejoice” with HALA regular Rouge Mary on vocals – show that whilst it is rooted in Butler’s recovery from drug addiction, Omnion is an album of both reflective moments and joyful celebration.
In addition to Badwan and Van Etten, Butler is joined on Omnion by Lebanese rockers Mashrou’ Leila and Icelandic sister act Sísý Ey, as well as regular collaborators Rouge Mary and Gustaph.
From the retro-futurist Paradise Garage grooves of Hercules & Love Affair’s eponymous 2008 debut – with longtime friend ANOHNI on the classic, “Blind” – via the thoughtful elegiac songwriting of 2011’s Blue Songs, to the bumping, grittier pulse of 2014’s The Feast of the Broken Heart, Butler has nailed a body of work that bridges the dance floor and home listening.
Omnion moves his game up a notch and reflects his current “hypersensitivity” to all that is going on. “Sometimes the dance floor represents a decision to avoid dialogue with the wider world, to commune with people but not really talk,” Butler explains. “But humans need to challenge themselves and step it up. Not that everything has to be so serious but this Hercules record is.”

Thursday, August 31, 2017 - French-Cuban twins Ibeyi are back to announce details of their second album Ash, a record that tackles subjects as diverse as womanhood, spirituality, activism and racism, all conveyed in Ibeyi’s own unique blend of modern pop, hip-hop and electronic influenced music that incorporates the traditional sounds of Yorùbá. Set for release on September 29 via XL Recordings, Ash is the follow-up to the twin’s 2015 critically acclaimed, eponymous debut album that made Ibeyi a globally recognized name. Today Ibeyi share a video for album track ‘Deathless feat. Kamasi Washington’ directed by Ed Morris (director for ‘River’).
While Ibeyi’s first album grappled with the past—the sister’s relationship, origins, loss, and roots. It earned them fans and collaborators in some of the most iconic and crucial artists of today, Beyoncé and Alvin Ailey included. By contrast, Ash is a more visceral and potent political statement, and while firmly rooted in Afro-Cuban culture and history, finds itself entirely concerned with Ibeyi’s present: Who Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi are, what’s important to them, and how they live today, especially given that the spheres, both personally and politically, are entirely different from when Ibeyi was recorded.
Ash was recorded in November 2016 in London with producer Richard Russell at his studio The Copper House. ‘Deathless,’ the second track to be debuted from Ash, features the incomparable Kamasi Washington on saxophone, and was written in the wake of an experience that Lisa-Kaindé had when she was sixteen that involved her being wrongly arrested by French police. She went home and wrote the emotive ‘Deathless,’ in which she describes her experience: “I was writing Deathless as an anthem for everybody!” Lisa-Kaindé says. “For every minority. For everybody that feels that they are nothing, that feels small, that feels not cared about and I want them to listen to our song and for three minutes feel large, powerful, deathless. I have a huge amount of respect for people who fought for, what I think, are my rights today and if we all sing together ‘we are deathless, ’they will be living through us into a better world.”

Kicking off on September 30 in France, the tour will extend across continents ending on November 19 in North America. Ibeyi’s live performance is mesmerizing and not to be missed and as Los Angeles’ KCRW explained, “there is a remarkable power to what they do.” So on the September 29th, step out of the gloom and into Ibeyi’s world, a place of optimism, openness and acceptance. The modern world never looked so beautiful as it does through Ibeyi’s lens.
