Juanita Stein says, "This record is an ode to the dark heart of America. Of times gone and times to come. Dusty trails, a whimsical 50s suburbia and the haze of the 1960s. I've forever idealised American life - growing up in Australia we were fed the American dream through film and television. The dichotomy between what was real and a dream is forever intriguing to me. The music of Roy Orbison, Dusty Springfield, Lee and Nancy and Patsy Cline all informed my musical sensibilities. They opened up this wide screen universe for me.”
An evocative and beautiful record, Stein’s honeyed voice weaves stories of heartbreak and optimism, from the unmistakably Western-influenced Dark Horse, to the moody love song, I’ll Cry. Florence is inspired by a real-life photograph by Dorothea Langue, taken during the Great Depression, of the eponymous Florence Owens Thompson. The songs on the LP tell tales of characters real and imagined, Stein’s own experiences woven amongst them.
Juanita Stein grew up in Sydney with her parents and twin brothers. Her first studio recording was aged five, singing on a song of her father’s, and Peter Stein in fact wrote one of the songs on the album, the country music-drenched Cold Comfort (read Juanita talking about Peter on the brilliant My Old Manblog here).
Stein formed Howling Bells with her brother, Joel, and friends when they moved to London together in 2004. Four acclaimed albums followed, along with headline tours and festival shows around the world, and huge support dates including several US tours with Coldplay and The Killers. A break from Howling Bells around the arrival of her first child saw the first shoots of her solo work start to emerge, and now we find ourselves here. America, an unpredictable place, forever bound up in a uniquely widescreen hope and romance.
America came out to considerable acclaim in July, hitting the UK’s Top 10 Record Store and Americana charts following its release. Stein has so far played festival shows including in London’s Hyde Park and at Cambridge Folk Festival, as well as headline dates in Brighton and London, in support of its release.

New Album Cut  “Get Lost”  Revealed via COLLiDE Today

"Lina Tullgren’s First Album Is Going To Be So Good"  FADER

"Lina Tullgren brings a dark, moody air to her songs and arrangements that gives them an unsettling edge that also draws you in."  BrooklynVegan

“Her haunting melodies and intimacy conveyed through her introspective lyrics has us on the edge of our seats for the full release. “ -  COLLiDE

Lina Tullgren’s  highly anticipated debut album  Won  is set for releaseSeptember 22 on Captured Tracks. It is the product of what happens when you push past the fear of what it means to think out loud – to become accountable for your internal struggles by way of manifesting your ideas into songs that are then free to grow apart from you, to exist on their own while always remaining specifically implicative of you. On new album track “Get Lost”, Tullgren turns the table on herself by investing in that scary, intimate moment when one rids themselves of diversion and looks squarely and honestly into the mirror. “Get Lost” debuted with  COLLiDE  and is available to post/share HERE . Previously, she shared hauntingly moody album cut  “Fitchburg State” via  BrooklynVegan  and debuted album single “ Asktell ” and announced the album with  FADER .

STREAM “GET LOST” HERE

Won envelopes listeners with the idea of “home” and “homecoming” - - whether that means a relationship, a physical space, a mentality, or emotion is up to the listener. With 2016’s Wishlist EP – recorded to tape at the home of band mate Ty Ueda – Lina proved an ability to craft simple, introspective and succinct songs, each one a pulsing glow leaving you both hollow and whole, alone but never lonely. It is on Lina’s debut album Won that we reap the full rewards of this newfound confidence in expression and rejection of internal hesitation. It is clear throughout that Lina’s awareness of her internal shift is folded into every corner of these songs. The move towards working with a full band, the deliberate force with which her often quiveringly raw vocals are delivered, and the lyrics themselves, are all constantly functioning to process and take stock of an updated self.

Hailing from Southern Maine, the 23 year old found herself a voice with the electric guitar, uniquely flavored and shaped from the many years of fiddle lessons and classical technique. Now backed by a full band, each track manages to remain piercingly intimate, sometimes brief, and always honest, while gaining a wholly new sense of gestation both sonically and lyrically. At a certain point, growth is not just a process of replacing old selves with new, but often simply an act of expansion. Won, in many ways, continues to dig through Lina’s preoccupation with the search for home.

Jessica Boudreaux Announces Debut Solo LP 'No Fury' Prod. by The Thermals’ Hutch Harris Out 11/3 + “Televised” Video

Jessica Boudreaux
(of Summer Cannibals)

Announcing Debut Solo Record, No Fury
Prod. by The Thermals’ Hutch Harris,  Out  November 3

Blackbook Magazine Premieres  “Televised” Video  Today

Jessica Boudreaux, leader of Kill Rock Stars’ fiery garage-rock ensembleSummer Cannibals, has announced her debut solo effort,  No Fury , releasedNovember 3. When crafting her debut solo effort Boudreaux collaborated with Hutch Harris of Portland no-fi legends The Thermals who co-wrote five tracks and produced the record. Maintaining the brooding bite that she has become known for, on No Fury Boudreaux replaced the wailing riffs and pounding drums with intricate guitar melodies and creatively incorporated pop synths.

Brimming with pop hooks and fiery lyrics, No Fury packs an emotional punch. It is incredibly danceable while at the same time filled with anger and a bittersweet sadness. Co-written with and featuring back-up vocals by The Thermals’ Hutch Harris, lead single “Televised” takes a reflective look at relationship, asserting accountability & truth in what happens between two people. With a driving bass line that commands listeners to move “Televised” is a blistering summer jam. The  “Televised” video  debuted with  Blackbook Magazine  and is available to post/share  HERE .

Collaborating with recording engineer Victor Nash, who tracked much of the album at his sci-fi themed studio Destination: Universe in Portland, No Fury is a pop collection filtered through the eyes and ears of a true rocker. The album serves as an homage to the pop idols of her childhood (Madonna, Britney Spears) and a companion of her current contemporaries (Tegan and Sara, Carly Rae Jepsen). No Fury is a unique peek into the influences, desires, and ultimately, the pure pop heart of Jessica Boudreaux.

RELEASE MANIACAL "SHAPESHIFTER" TRACK INSPIRED BY CRONENBERG SCI-FI/HORROR FLICK VIDEODROMEUK TOUR STARTS TONIGHT WITH LONDON RESIDENCY

ALBUM RELEASE SHOW AT THE MOROCCAN LOUNGE IN LA ON OCT 19

SELF-TITLED DEBUT OUT OCTOBER 20Photo: Moni Haworth"Warbly Jets make the kind of attitude-heavy, riffy psych-rock that recalls early ’00s Primal Scream,

Brooklyn Vegan
“Gutsy, melodic and catchy-as-hell”
Matt Wilkinson, Beats 1
New York, NY (September 5, 2017) – Warbly Jets are an LA quartet that don't fit comfortably into a scene… they exist into out in the ether, caught somewhere between yesterday and today, where massive rock melodies brush up against skittish breakbeats and laser-guided synth lines. The band' self-titled debut will release on October 20 and after teasing three singles from the album, now they've released the maniacal "Shapeshifter".

The track was inspired by the Cronenberg science fiction/horror flick Videodrome and is an aggressive anthem equivalent to brushing your teeth with a belt sander.

"We wanted something incredibly aggressive to polarize the songs that were ending up more strings-centric,” says Julien O’Neill (synths/guitar). "I put it all together in a damp, dripping space on Hollywood and Vine and Sam concocted a vicious noise solo on synth that brought it all home."

"The key changes make you feel like you're trying to walk a tight rope after getting spun around on an merry go round,” add vocalist Samuel Shea. "To me the lyrics have always been about and inevitable force throwing a personal equilibrium out of balance."

Belle Game Share “Bring Me” w/ BlackBook + LP Out 9/8 On Arts & Crafts + National Tour w/ Broken Social Scene

Belle Game Share New Single “ Bring Me ” w/  BlackBook

Fear/Nothing LP Out 9/8 On Arts & Crafts

National Tour w/ Broken Social Scene

"Spine-chilling ... a thrilling anthem of self-possession and emotional fearlessness" – BlackBook
"A shimmering, sparkling take that would make the perfect summer road trip soundtrack"– W Magazine
"Lo's voice is an expansive, powerful instrument that demands to be noticed"  – Pitchfork
"Reminisces upon youthful encounters with narcissism, codependency and habitual lies" – Rolling Stone

In anticipation of their sophomore album  Fear/Nothing  slated for release September 8th on Arts & Crafts, Vancouver’s Belle Game share new single “ Bring Me ” withBlackBook today. Highlighted by haunting atmospherics, the track builds to a powerful chorus and further enforces the band’s unique ability to weave ethereal soundscapes into blown-out, crush-pop confections. About the track, frontwoman Andrea Lo comments:
“‘Bring Me’ is about ending passive behaviour. It’s a display of tenacity, resilience, and self-assurance over learned patterns of compliance, conformity and service to others. ‘See what I can do’ stands out as an important line to me as it taunts my past with a sense of mastery over what was once timing.”Fear/Nothing is a ten-track collection produced by Dave Hamelin (The Stills) and executive producer Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene). A record of lush compositions, Belle Game combines the sweeping ethereal pop of the Cocteau Twins with the energetic vocal-driven melodies of genre-defying artists like Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Jessy Lanza. Belle Game previously shared singles “Spirit” (via W Magazine) and “Low.”
Upon the release of their debut album Ritual Tradition Habit, the band earned critical praise from the likes of Rolling Stone and Pitchfork, while their emotional live performances prompted Paste Magazine to name them one of the “10 Great New Bands of CMJ.”
From hushed anthems to distorted instrumentals, Fear/Nothing sees the band teetering between two worlds. Whatever the mood, it’s always a celebration of the hard times and a refusal of fear. Belle Game will hit the road for a full North American tour as lead support for Broken Social Scene. See below for a full date listing + tickets are availablehere.
