The Pains of Being Pure at Heart shares video for "So True," launches west coast tour this week
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart shares video for "So True," launches west coast tour this week
VIDEO: "So True" -
YouTube
Today the Pains of Being Pure at Heart shares the music video for "So True" the fourth single from its recently released fourth album, The Echo of Pleasure. The album is now available to order here in all formats. The band also launches a west coast tour this Friday night in Vancouver.Thoughts on "So True" from Kip Berman:The song “So True” is about two young friends, Ylva and Olga, who find different ways to resist the crippling oil wealth and conservative bourgeoise "niceness" of their native Norway, through direct, leftist political action and/or just getting fucked up a lot. But it's also ultimately from the perspective of how I am older, married with a daughter and incapable of chaining myself to an oil rig or passing out in the park because I have things I need to do and people to care for. I could never be "so true" as all that. The visual treatment, entirely the work of the director Nicola Saint-Marc, works with this idea of the compromises of our lives and the way that we are seemingly unrecognizable to our own selves over time. We see a successful woman living with her younger, wilder self, and all the joys and conflicts of their cohabitation. But these women could also represent my own relationship to The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - a band I started when I was younger that has mirrored my own life in its many transformations. I sometimes feel like I’m living with a familiar stranger, the older songs speak to a life that is markedly different from how I live now.But that’s fine.I have tried to continue to live and make music with honesty and idealism, and not wear a costume of perpetual adolescence. There’s a lurking tragedy in the video - and it is unclear if the sadness and regret with which the older woman views her own history is ultimately one she would undo. But for my life, I know the many painful moments and flat out “dumbassery” has made me more capable of being a partner, parent and friend to the people who matter most to me. Maybe I’m still not “So True” as the untested absolutes of youth, but I’m trying to get somewhere almost as good. TOUR DATES:

Arranged by Emmy Award-winner Nobuyuki Nakajima with artistic direction by Philippe Lerichomme, the album features symphonic versions of classic Gainsbourg songs ranging from the beginnings of his career in the 1950s to those written especially for Birkin, such as “Jane B” and “Baby Alone in Babylone,” penned after the legendary couple’s separation. As Gainsbourg’s companion of 12 years (during which daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg was born), Birkin occupies a unique position as an interpreter of his music. “It is a privilege that one of the greatest French writers wrote for me from the age of 20 to 45,” Birkin says. “In a way it never stopped. It’s a strange situation. What can I do for him now, even though it’s too late! At least I can wear him, take him with me. Say his words!” Having sung his songs on stages around the world for more than 30 years, Birkin came to the realization that Gainsbourg had been so inspired by and used classical music so often within his music that a symphonic project would mark a truly logical extension of his body of work.
Photo credit: Shoichi KanoA live collaboration with Nakajima in Japan surrounding a benefit for the victims of the 2011 tsunami and Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster led to a deep admiration for his arrangements of Gainsbourg’s music and solidified the concept. “Nobu writes beautiful arrangements, so delicate, so moving,” she notes. “He has understood Serge’s charm, which can be funny as well as dramatic, can make you laugh out loud or cry when your soul is touched.”Gainsbourg was a prolific singer/songwriter, novelist, actor and filmmaker known for his provocative words and outrageous behavior. His musical genius—covering classical, chanson, jazz, rock, reggae and more—is still felt in France and around the world more than 25 years after his death in 1991. An inspiration for musicians across the world, his songs have been sampled by artists ranging from De La Soul to Massive Attack and his work cited as influences by Beck, Yo La Tengo and Tame Impala, to name just a few. So important is his impact on the cultural life of his home country that François Mitterrand, the French president at the time of Gainsbourg’s death, described him as “our Baudelaire, our Apollinaire…he elevated song to the level of art.”

Synth-pop pioneers OMD return with their dazzling 13th studio album ‘The Punishment of Luxury’ which sees them combine the wistful nostalgia and idealized romance of their previous work while stepping out of their comfort zone. The LP is out September 1st on White Noise Records.
The follow up to the critically acclaimed ‘English Electric’ (released in 2013) ‘The Punishment Of Luxury’ is a daring collection of stylish synth pop and masterful songwriting which will certainly rank alongside their very best.
Written, recorded, produced and mixed by OMD – Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys – the album is the sound of a band in their prime. ‘On this album we have managed to make beautiful things out of noises and repetitive patterns’, explains Andy. ‘The trouble is, we just cant help but write a catchy melody!’
The album takes its name from an 1891 painting by the Italian Giovani Segantini and contains everything from the Kraftwerkian ‘Isotype’ and ‘Robot Man’ to the blue eyed soul ballads of ‘One More Time’ and ‘The View From Here’ as well as more traditional OMD songs like ‘Kiss Kiss Kiss Bang Bang Bang’ and the synth heavy title track.
Described by The Quietus as “not just one of the best synth bands ever – they are one of the best bands ever”, OMD’s influence has become ubiquitous. The xx, the Killers and LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy have cited OMD as an inspiration, and the likes of Future Islands and Chvrches show traces of OMD’s DNA.

Nicole Atkins says; "I've been a fan of Tommy and his music for a very long time. He and I became good friends when I met him after a show of mine and he's been a real inspiration to me. The guy lives and breathes music and is always wanting to find new sounds and talk about it. His attitude towards music is one of great wonder and enthusiasm, and when he asked me to produce these songs, I was so honored. The recording was done in one day in Nashville and Tommy trusted me to arrange him and his band into what I was hearing in my head. The songs have such visual romance when you listen to them. When we recorded "Too Late," I felt like I was living that heartache and surrender, but it was a good time! Ha! They're something I'm really proud of and I can't wait to do more with them."This past year, Tommy Stinson reformed BASH & POP, making a very welcome return with the release of Anything Could Happen on Fat Possum Records. The album received praise across the board, including in depth interviews with Tommy onBandcamp, Esquire and Rolling Stone among others, as well as appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The record features stellar contributions from lead guitarist Steve Selvidge (The Hold Steady), Joe Sirois (Mighty Mighty BossTones) on drums and Justin Perkins (Screeching Weasel) on bass guitar, all who feature in the live band. Touring for most of 2017, they hit the road again on September 19th. Hailed by critics as the best album of her career, Nicole Atkins ' fourth studio album, Goodnight Rhonda Lee , is a vintage soul album inspired by legendary artists such as Dusty Springfield, Candi Staton, Loretta Lynn and Janis Joplin. Nicole has garnered praise ranging from the New York Times to Time magazine, as well as performing on late night TV (Letterman, Conan). She is currently on an extensive tour of the US and Europe. On Tour Now!
Fiesta is out now on limited color vinyl and all digital formats on Volar Records. Orders of the vinyl are available at the Volar Bandcamp.

Ice Balloons’ new video “Pie Is Alive”, off their new album Fiesta, showcases the group’s electronic and psychedelic freak out through its use of their iconic golden fly and slow motion beach fighting. Their rhythmic beats and intense vocals, come together to demonstrate the pure absurdity, yet deliberateness, of their video.
No-wave, noise-punk supergroup Ice Balloons - Kyp Malone (TV On The Radio), Sean Kennerly (Samiam), Sean Powell (Fuckemos, Surfbort), Giselle Reiber (Midnight Masses), Dan Scinta (Wild Yaks), Dani Miller (Surfbort) and BA Miale- have taken the reins of rambunctious rock and turned it on its head. By way of static, synth and surreal sensations that can only be experienced by immersing yourself in Ice Balloons.
With a lineup like this; there’s plenty of room for personality to push through. Elements of early, noise-ecstatic TVOTR days are evident while the crass crashes of Powell’s cymbals are unapologetic to blowing out your bodega-bought earbuds.
