This book is becoming substantially less racist. Or rather, the characters are remaining just as racist, but I'm starting to believe that the author himself, at least, is decidedly NOT racist, by 1980s standards anyway. He seems to have a fundamental awareness of the racial tensions between NYC aristocrats and Harlem/the Bronx, and he's writing it in a way that feels #woke enough for its time. I'm enjoying it better.
