It kind of forces you to just GET how this world works through parallels to the real world rather than explaining...anything. Which is feel like might make this dated, but for now it is a very relevant tale.
But I also stand by that a book is trying WAY TOO hard when you honestly say the phrase "woman up"

I always love a book about a bitchy protagonist. Make it in the 90s, the protag wants to change her life but is just MESSY, and gay?? Awesome.

Too bad the lesbian is a cop, and sort of a cliche, but at least she's important (and maybe actually making Mary fall for her oooh)
The mystery is really interesting - did Leslie buy her baby? Kill whoever her husband was paying? I actually want to know!
Not super into Robin's ghost coming along and just spouting exposition every few chapters for?? No reason really as it doesn't tell us or impact anything

The plot certainly is going fast, and the characters already super fleshed out and interesting. Leslie is that paranoid housewife that HAS to be hiding something, while Mary is a total wild card who is definitely going to cause trouble, if not also hiding something.

The rules of this world are lost on me, but I do appreciate how indulgent it is to have vampires be basically celebrities while also being discriminated against? idk, but it certainly is fun, I can't wait until Merit is out of the newb stage of being a vampire and on to kicking ass and more in control of her blatantly erotic-based powers

I wanted some fluffy, nothing but fun after the beautiful heaviness of Poets of the Sea - and I actually really love how fun this is
Wastes no time turning Merit, and the rest is hilarious or at least fun. The world is interesting, but not trying to be ground breaking (I think there would be a lot more conflict if vampires were revealed to be real lol) and the blatant erotic-based powers is pretty entertaining too

I'm loving Violet's attempts to change, mostly through realizing her faults and finding things she actually likes to do (without some subtle guilt about ruining everything anytime anything goes wrong).
But it really is a character driven story, the shipwreck is just a means for Violet and Liv to get closer and closer. And everything is VERY romantic, I want to swoon thinking about these situations

The ship wreck doesnt seem that important to the plot, most of it is just Violet's days, how she interacts with people, how she's trying to be a better person and be more comfortable with herself and her situation.
Every character seems so lived in, and the environment is so graphic and beautiful. Everything about this book is beautiful - language and plot and love and romance :heart eyes:
