Loving the cover.



Hope the book is good. I saw news that this is going to be made into a sci-fi TV show, it's been on my tbr for a while now. And I've not read sci-fi recently. So here goes.

This is effing dark for a children's book! Sorta like A Series of Unfortunate Events in terms of the devilishness of characters.

My first DWJ book. I'd have liked to start with Howl's Moving Castle but I don't have the book. This one seems interesting, but it's a childrens/YA fantasy, I'll see how it goes.

Anybody know of any books that are the opposite of Fahrenheit 451?

In Fahrenheit 451, reading books or owning them is a crime. And all books are burnt.

So are there books which have a story something like "everyone has to read books, not reading books is a crime"? :D I'd like to read such a book if it exists :D

Not getting enough time to read this book at a stretch of a few hours because this book is filled with details that I can't hope to remember with 10-15 minute reading sprees.

Will pick it up later.

A hundred times I was upon the point of killing myself; but still I loved life. This ridiculous foible is perhaps one of our most fatal characteristics; for is there anything more absurd than to wish to carry continually a burden which one can always throw down? to detest existence and yet to cling to one's existence? in brief, to caress the serpent which devours us, till he has eaten our very heart?

I'm barely 20 pages in and this book is set to be one of my all time favorites across all books.

Optimism is fine. Religions and Gods, those are fine too. But damn me if the world hasn't poked their eyes out and made themselves blind to the horrors of reality of the world that his grace has so gracefully and mercifully created for humans. Give me a fucking break.

This is the best possible world - Fuck that.

Wait, what the fuck, hahahahaha!

Stephen says this with the seriousness and existential meaning that is behind Charlie saying "And in that moment, I swear we were infinite." in The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

Stephen is off his rocker. Talking about eternity out of nowhere.

How does Sanderson come up with these fucking epic ideas??!!

“Your genetic material has tons of extraneous data anyway. We mimic that—all we have to do is add in a little extra string of information, with marks to tell the body to ignore it. Like commented-out sections of code.”

Converting human cells into data storage. Your thumb literally becomes a thumb drive. I'd like to see how this is used in the plot.

Oh, Sanderson! Hardly 10 pages in and you already brought up your eyebrow game.

Ever since seeing the statistics of the occurrence of the phrase 'raised an eyebrow' or something of the like in Sanderson's Cosmere novels, I've been too aware of this most amusing little fact. No matter how serious the story is going, when eyebrows are mentioned, I laugh. 😂😂

I'm not finding enough time to read this year so far. Only 20-30 minutes at a stretch and I'm not liking it one bit. It's coming in the way of getting into the story of Gates of Fire. So I'm reading short novels so that I could feel that I've read something complete.

Legion has an incredibly fascinating premise, it is short and it's by Brandon Sanderson. 😁

And without violating momentum laws, you cannot spontaneously levitate and hover above the ground, whether or not you are seated in the lotus position.†

I was watching a recent interview of Neil DeGrasse Tyson on Stephen Colbert's show and listening to him speak about what keeps him up at night gave me goosebumps. Thinking about cosmos always does that. I suddenly feel a deep sense of unrest and this reminds me of the time I traveled to Ladakh to catch a glimpse of the Milky Way. Here is a photo I captured at Pangong Tso:

Well put. One would think our most passionate moments would transform into intricately detailed memories. Not all the time. And depending on the passions we've surrendered to, this can either be a boon or a bane.

I apprehended that excruciating war survivor’s torment, the sense of isolation and self-betrayal experienced by those who had elected to cling yet to breath when their comrades had let loose their grip.


The survivor's torment. This book is going to be fucking gruelling to read. It already, almost, is. Wars....... Fucking wars... Sigh.

So well put. This also applies to any being that needs to struggle for existence and has enough sentience to have a conscience. Morality or the struggle to be on the right side of it is indeed a handicap in the struggle for existence, as much as one may like it not to be.

First book of 2018!

I loved Jack London's White Fang so much, it was in my top 10 reads of 2017. Beautiful prose and an emotion-stirring story of a wild wolf that let's itself be domesticated.

The Call of the Wild is the story of a domestic dog that adapts to the wilderness and joins a wolf pack, the polar opposite of White Fang's plot.
