God, I need this satire on optimism right now! F*** optimism. F*** the fairytale version of our lives we peddle to each other through religions and what not, hoping everyone will ignore the sadistic nature of our existence, the complete lack of decency in our intentions and actions that are disguised as magnanimous acts of inclusion, kindness and humanity.

F*** optimism. F*** religions. All of 'em.

I once again fail in my the quest to tether myself to reality. I picked up a general fiction book hoping to stop reading fantasy for a while. But what do I do next? I put it on hold and read Marvel comics and then start reading another fantasy series.

I'm afraid my deep plunge into the ocean of fantasy would end up with me coming out of it with unshakeable lunacy.

*wtf am I even talking about*

Poor Thanos, he is too evil even for Mistress Death. Lol.

Lol. I will never be able to read comic books without rolling my eyes and laughing out loud at the absurdness of these stories and characters, and dialogue most of all 😁 I'm not saying I don't like this format, it's that there is an inherent silliness to it all in my opinion. But it is definitely a very entertaining kind of silliness. 😅

The artwork is just amazing. I'm afraid anything I have to say about the story might mean spoilers for prospect comic book readers and MCU fans who haven't watched Infinity War yet(why haven't you!!).

Effing Thanos out to collect the Infinity stones. The comic book arc for this part of the story seems to be very different from the MCU storyline, which is epic. Thanos has a very grounded characterization in MCU, he's not the typical villain who is full-on evil for the sake of being evil.

I can't wait to see this fker defeated in Avengers 4. But before that, I want to read the Infinity War event in Marvel comics.

I have been reading exclusively from the fantasy and sci-fi genres for a long time and that has some strange effects on me. Or at least, this habit has not helped me through stuff I hoped reading books might help me get through. It may be down to how I was processing these fantasy/sci-fi books, for they too offer emotional depth. But I don't know. Anyway, time for some good old general fiction.

Oops. This book is only half of the whole. Ends on a cliffhanger, for whatever the little stakes that are present in the book.

On to book #2 then.

It is a thoroughly satisfying moment when you eventually reach the chapter that has the same title as the book. You are like, "Fuck yeah! Let's do this"

Especially with a kickass name like "The Shadow of the Torturer"

I saw her lift the grating, and I loved her with a love that was deadly and yet not serious. Of course I went to her. I could no more have resisted her than I could have resisted the blind greed of Urth if I had tumbled over a cliff.

Damn!

I seem to understand everything that's happening and also nothing that is happening. Of course, it's tough to comprehend anything when there's an archaic or madeup word and concept, unexplained, in every page that the author wants the reader to not pursue definitively but to just understand them suggestively. That's a very tough thing to ask a reader and that audacity of the writer is what kept me interested so far.

Just as all that appears imperishable tends toward its own destruction, those moments that at the time seem the most fleeting recreate themselves - not only in my memory (which in the final accounting loses nothing) but in the throbbing of my heart and the prickling of my hair.

The title caught my eye first, then I read about how this is a lesser known fantasy/sci-fi classic, I'm sold.

*fuck readers block*

This book is not for everyone. The author goes off one long monologues every other page and that can be annoying for some readers. But I like the setting and the premise of this story very much, and the eerie way the story is set into motion. The tone of the narration is light, but I can't help but feel that a turn for the dark is just around the corner.
