Also, there's a LOT of expository dialogue.

I'm trying very hard to be charitable, as most of the characterizations are delightfully consistent with Disney's movie. However, the stretch forced on the Grand Duke is unpleasant.

Additionally, the "villain wants to maintain the aristocracy" motivation is hackneyed, and I had hoped for better.

This is HUGE. I don't think I'm up for this kind of behemoth right now.

I have not actually started this. It's huge and kind of intimidating.

Travis loves fantasy and adventure stories. However, this marks him as a loser among the other students in the small town he lives in. His dad also mocks him for not being athletic. Travis struggles to avoid giving in to depression.

Lydia's conflict in this book is that she has been accepted into NYU. She will receive financial aid that will allow her to go there. However, her friends don't have plans to go to college. Leaving them behind will be hard.

Travis is facing the conflict that he's an outcast at school. His father was sent to prison, and everyone in his small town talks about the situation when he and his mom aren't around. He only has two friends, and he feels like when he graduates, he's going to be stuck in a town full of people who either despise him or pity him (or both) for the rest of his life.

In the "Note on Terminology," Bancroft does acknowledge that control and abuse can be a problem in same-sex relationships, but does NOT acknowledge that it can be perpetuated by women on men in heterosexual relationships. Yes, we do need to explore why it is SO much more common for male partners to behave violently to female partners, but ignoring the fact that it does happen in the other direction is a failure.
