Slow going. "the average effective rate of return on capital may be higher when the individual's capital endowment is higher (as appears to be increasingly common)." Why would this be so? I'm not even sure what it means. :(

Liking this. If you're interested in it, check out the Rejected Princesses blog. I think my favorite part might be the art notes, where he talks about why he designed the image the way he did. Some of the things he points out are elements I wouldn't have noticed, or might not have thought about in that way.

I don't know if it's just because I've got other stuff going on and I'm always tired when I try to read it, but this book is making me feel dumb. :(

P9, later: "In the last third of the nineteenth century, wages [particularly throughout Europe] finally began to increase" - Why?

P9 continued: "or capital's share of national income would increase indefinitely (which sooner or later would unite the workers in revolt)." Would it? Wealth and power are intrinsically connected; as capitalists gain proportionately more, laborers have proportionately less. Could capitalists prevent revolution by keeping laborers helpless and afraid?

P9: "Marx's prediction of an apocalyptic end to capitalism: either the rate of return on capital would steadily diminish (thereby killing off the engine of accumulation and leading to violent conflict among capitalists)" - What if it's not steady? What if it diminishes, there's conflict among capitalists, causing some enterprises to fail and increasing opportunities / ROR for those who remain?

Wanting to write in the margins when I'm not out of the introduction is a good sign. It's a library book, so notes will be forthcoming.

Still not sure why everyone likes it SO MUCH. It's interesting in a nondescript way. Cool premise.

Not happy with the gatekeeping. I can *kind* of understand it from Elle, as Starfield is something she shared with her dad and so it makes sense for it to be SACRED to her. But there's a LOT of weight given to knowing the trivia from the series and what "true fans" will think. Really hoping the characters can grow past that. Also wish the side characters (esp Mark?) were less flat.

Listening to this one in the car. Love Eileen Stevens' narration - the way she gives a distinctive twist to each character's voice while still maintaining the thread of her own style. Would have liked a bit of drawl for the stepmom, as even if she isn't a native Charlestonian, I can see her styling herself as a "southern belle."

Disappointed in Danielle's gatekeeping. Understandable, but I hope it changes.
