Gotta say, if I didn't read a version with funny annotations in it, I would have such a hard time continuing.

The fact alone that the magic system is so incredibly underdeveloped drives me mad. There's no rhyme or reason to what the characters are able or unable to achieve with their powers, or why they run out of magic at convenient plot points, while having random passive buffs other times.

Like, fuck off.

It's actually ridiculous how good of a workout-audiobook this is

Two pages in, and there's already so much more intention in the writing compared to other books on my current shelf, it's astonishing.

Also the Institute just reads like one of those ultra-cringey alpha-male camps where MEN learn how to do MAN-THINGS like HUNTING and RULING and POLITICS. And the protagonist doesn't succeed because he's acting different from the rest, but because he's just better at those disciplines than they are. Which is ONLY the case because he's the fucking Ship of Theseus become man.

Full spoiler, but I don't care:

How is there any sort of commentary on a class system when the protagonist, who's supposed to break it, has to be externally modified in every conceivable way in order to prove that his class is not lesser than the ruling one?
There's so many references to him retaining abilities that are innate to his former life, but they don't make sense when his brain and muscles are not the same.

Re-Listen to prepare for Stormlight 5 and to have something to listen to while working out

Started listening to the audiobook, got to 20%, realized I'd seen some Reel about the movie that spoils the entire mystery of the story and now I loathe the thought of continuing the listen, because it's really not as interesting as to be able to make up for this knowledge :,D
So a DNF it is.

I'm growing more and more perplexed by the popularity of this book

So... if the red tribes are this oppressed people, scraping by with bare necessities, why do 16-year olds sound like philosophers at least twice their age?
So many things already don't quite add up...

Developing a pet peeve with future-stuff just being two words mashed together to convey their meaning.
duroArmor, headTalk, horizonTram, all of them feel as though they try to invoke the same brand-image an iPod does. But in reality, I'm just left wondering if there are no competent marketing people in the future.

Somehow there's a weird vibe with novels describing authors and the publishing industry. As if they wanted to describe a book they really wanna write but don't have the required knowledge to do so, which oddly shows in the vague way the fictional authors talk about their fictional books.

I feel like there should be a rule for time travelers not to be massive, obvious idiots.
If somebody answered me "Far away, very far away" when I ask them where they're from, my immediate next question would be about the location of their time machine.

I was honestly a bit worried about this being a "stereotypical american dudebro gets trapped in fantasy land" with him being able to just dudebro his way out of every situation. But nope, Carl is learning? He's actually trying to adapt?

I honestly cannot remember much from back when I read "Norse Mythology" but the more I read the actual source material, the more I am confused why HeWhoMustNotBeNamed felt like he needed to rewrite it? Was it solely to appease the gods of capitalism?
So many of the stories already work super well in a purely translated form. I know there's differences between translations, but this is a delightful one.

You really have to be in the correct mood to read this.
I am, unfortunately, not. At this point I'm just getting frustrated by the amount of tangents the story goes on to bombard you with irrelevant, often contradictory worldbuilding.
I know whimsical surrealism is Nightvale's whole brand, but it's been almost 200 pages and the plot has barely progressed.
But hey, I now know what's up with postal workers?

Okay so Nightvale-books are basically an ADHD-person trying to tell you a story while constantly getting distracted by weird little details. The main problem being, that Nightvale consists entirely of weird little details.

People have been in a coffee shop for two pages and I now know about Barista-only neighbourhoods, the routines of a scientist, time being weird and people's tendencies to form frenzied mobs.

Sorry, but I'm having quite a hard time to sympathize with someone who has experienced nothing but the opposite of consequences to her actions

Fourteen pages in, I hate every single character with a great passion

Three pages in and I'm slightly scared that my taste in storytelling might've changed outside the scope of Nightvale a bit

I'm actually baffled how easy it is for me to read this book, after having adjusted to stories that bank on your patience. Not used to knocking out 200 pages in one day

I am repeating myself but damn. This was MEANT to be an audiobook. First time in ages I'm not switching to 2x speed.

Love that the only effort to keep the apocalypse at bay stems from the horrifying concept of being unemployed in a society that hates old people.
