A blisteringly literary book. So much less interesting than I expected.

This wasn't on my initial list of dystopias, but it was on my shelf. I realized the other day that it very much qualifies.

Wha?!? He's 15? Picturing Malcolm McDowell, I was not imagining the protagonist so young as 15. Huh...

I can say this much for it: It's got me emotionally engaged, finally. I'm pissed at these teachers, right now.

Actually starting the Feedbooks ePub version of the book, which seems not to have an ISBN. Not sure how to tell Goodreads which of several eBook editions I actually am reading. Oh, well.

...and, there it is, the unnecessary mention of nazis. Should I count it against the book, if it's only in the appendix? Probably; the appendix is written as though to a resident of the book's universe. Sigh.

The only way this book can turn out internally consistent is if everything with O'Brien, the torture, the long conversations, all of it, never happened - if Winston imagined the entire thing. Either way, I hate it.

I often find myself unaware of plot holes, but some of the inconsistencies (primarily in what Winston wrote/didn't in his diary) of these interrogations totally disrupt what little immersion this book has left.

I suppose the best of it has passed, and the rest will be literal torture? Sigh.

Painful. True: "The masses never revolt of their own accord, and they never revolt merely because they are oppressed. Indeed, so long as they are not permitted to have standards of comparison, they never even become aware that they are oppressed."

Getting into the nitty-gritty of the book-within-a-book, the pure ideas unadulterated by the frustration of being a novel, I find the reading, finally, to come easily and engagingly. Not looking forward to going back to Winston.

Some brilliant, important, relevant, startling ideas here, mired in mediocre-to-unreadable prose. Still going quite slowly. Struggling a little less since switching to the eBook from paper.

A slow, slogging read, going half my normal speed. Worse, it seems to be one of the rare & dreadful books which puts me to sleep. I should be wide awake; it's my mid-day, but 1984 is entirely soporific.

Still waiting for the anti-Christian dystopian fiction which doesn't need to distort God's word to show how awful it would be if Christians ruled the world - all you're doing is showing how people who are evil shouldn't rule the world, and your message would work just as well with a distorted version of any doctrine/book/faith/laws/ideas.

Based on the dystopian literature I've read by them, Feminists seem to have a very twisted & perverted view of 1) the world, generally, and 2) the male mind, specifically. Their male characters (and the bizarre worlds they've created for them, which only a Feminist could dream up) are the sort of flat, stereotype-driven distortions which would be thrown out if based on race rather than gender.

Oh, God! Ugh! Not merely plotting, but a full-blown conspiracy. In the last 40 pages, everything interesting about the first 80 has been wiped out by the crude, smashing blow of feminism & its nightmares. I'll keep reading, but my hopes are dashed. The only thing worse would be mention of Nazis.

Bleh. Plot. We were starting to get an interesting SciFi book going, and then the author has to go and ruin it with some infernal plot? Literal plotting/scheming going on, here. Sigh.

Guess this is going back to the library unfinished. I've re-requested it, I'll get back to it in a few weeks.

Made a lot of good progress today. I'm stopping in the middle of a chapter because I can feel that my brain has become saturated. I'll be able to add more information in later, or tomorrow, but right now I doubt any new info will persist.

Definitely slowing down as I dig deeper; there's a lot more reading to this than is between these covers, lots of Documentation which needs to be absorbed along the way; rabbit holes within rabbit holes, at times. I hope I'm able to finish it within the three weeks before the library wants it back.

3 chapters is about all I could handle (plus a hard time getting Xcode working on a 2nd computer, in the middle of ch2) on my first day. I'm going to try pre-reading ch4, until I fall asleep, then see how much of all this I retain when I get up "tomorrow" (tonight). The boon has been working for me so far, btw. Well-written & clear most of the time.

Chapter 1 took a while on account of a multi-hour rabbit hole I jumped down, wherein I signed up and paid to be a registered iOS developer & read the full text of 3 long legal agreements along the way. Built my first iOS app while I was at it. Fun!
