Insane to think, in hindsight, how ambivalent Roosevelt, the American public, even American Jews, were about even just opening up immigration for Jews under nazi germany. It all feels so preventable and yet not… scary.

Reading this book is like reuniting with old friends. I love Zafon’s gloomy atmospheric writing. Daniel and Fermin are back and little Easter eggs about Martin and the tragic story of angels game…

Is Jim and his family.. extremely ooc as secretly educated slaves? I mean I love the reimagining but I’m judging it with fanfic standards haha. Fantastic writing so far.

Um no. Lin Manuel Miranda did not “slow productivity”his way to in the heights’ tonys. He was hustling and doing so many different things!! I love him but he was really lucky and his jones day lawyer wife supported him to make his myriad. MYRIAD. creative pursuits possible. LMM is not a great choice to make the case for slow productivity cos that man is nonnnnn-stop

I recognize that the author acknowledged some knowledge workers (including a specific shoutout to law firm associates judged on amount of hours billed lol) don’t have a say in the metric of their productivity, it still feels like most of the advice/anecdotes are not applicable to most. I think this book falls into my most common self-help book critique: easier said than done

Hmmm not sure I’m the target audience for this book since my professional life cannot be more chill lol. Questioning and pushing back on late stage capitalism is always good though. I wish more people agreed.

I don’t think I’ve ever argued with Alan about a book as much as this one. (Maybe other than house pet lol) I recognize I have a mental block that refuses to go down any logical path that rationalizes killing billions of people and wiping out everything on earth. I took game theory in college. I get it. But surely. Surely. This can’t possibly be the only way.

After I listened to the big one podcast I freaked out and made us emergency earthquake backpacks. Welp the nervous breakdown is back and what do I do here?! Become a prepper?! Alan is weirdly nonchalant and unskeptical about mutually assured destruction. I am not ok. Amazingly researched and structured book tho.

This is a horrifying read. Not great to hear the intercepter missile success rate is lower than my pokemon unite solo queue win rate.

American bookstore history really is American history. So interesting. I’ve never thought about book stores as gathering places before where the storeowners would actually want you to browse. I thought they’d tell you it’s not a library and gtfo. Or bookstore owners who double as counselors and activists, romanticizing never turning a profit. I wonder how many of that kind of bookstore/owners are still around.
