(1/?) Changing my first impression on the book. Listening to the last 10 hours of the book on a hike changed my perspective - feeling more willing to be patient, grounded, and wonderstruck being amongst the subject of the book (well not trees but chaparral and brushes (and invasive black mustards boo!!!)). Trying to come to terms with not mistaking satisfaction with meaningful as the book suggested.

This is also very murakami esque. I don’t understand. Is fever dream vignettes a prereq for winning the Pulitzer/the Nobel?!

So surprisingly funny and I can totally see the influences in DMATMOOBIL! Enjoying it a lot. I remember 10 year old Joyce hating it.

The bits about humanization are hard to read… how can people be so cruel. But book is shedding a light for me on trumps base, with caste as the lens, and immigrant/black/latino trump supporters…

What a bizarre book.. ._. I hope it resonates with somebody cos I’m lost. Is it not cheating if you did it while time traveling?! Does giving your mom from the past permission to live as her own woman make your own life have meaning?! Telling the hotel owner to invest in Apple and Starbucks. Doesn’t that break the rules of time travel?! Why do I care about this book enough to have so many questions?!

What in the holy white privilege is this book?! How dare her mom vacation without her when she’s 1 and how can you eat salads not from erewhon?! Also husband what husband. Sleeping around and yelling at stranger that I think is my mom is finnnneee cos I’m trying to *find myself*

I’m finally free. What a wild and extremely unpleasant ride 😅 I have to admit the plot was gripping me a bit at the end but every time I start to care about the politics some unhinged weird smut comes in and ruins the immersion. Not in a fun way!! I dunno how to approach this book since the author seems to suggest she wrote it as a joke. But I’m just glad it’s finally over. 1/10 writing 1/10 vibes lol.

Because her mom went on vacation without her when she was a baby her whole life is a lie? What?!

Really hoping this selfish entitled mommy’s girl act AND THE CHEATING are just setting up for some major character development.

Does make you really wanna visit Positano though.

It’s supernatural?!

Currently reading books set in Italy before our Italian vacation. (This one is set in Positano) I think I’m gonna have to add Positano to the itinerary (maybe day trip from Sorrento?) but after my brilliant friend I’m also dying to visit Naples!! But only if we could time travel back to the 50s…

Such vivid setting and rich characterization. What amazing writing! The close knit working class neighborhood reminds me of mine growing up. ~As kids you don’t know how poor or violent your neighborhood is. It’s just how life is. Of course it will be nice if everyone acted as the priest said, but that doesn’t happen. So you just live with it.~ This book is everything I love about a good Bildungsroman

Art really is a reflection of the beholder — I disliked the alchemist, but this book is really speaking to me. Even more serendipitous on a hike with a friend today she referenced the alchemist quote that was also in this book! (Something like the universe conspires to help you achieve your dreams). Maybe I should reread the alchemist and see how it strikes me now…
