Such vivid setting and rich characterization. What amazing writing! The close knit working class neighborhood reminds me of mine growing up. ~As kids you don’t know how poor or violent your neighborhood is. It’s just how life is. Of course it will be nice if everyone acted as the priest said, but that doesn’t happen. So you just live with it.~ This book is everything I love about a good Bildungsroman

Hmm this book warmed my emo little heart :c

Art really is a reflection of the beholder — I disliked the alchemist, but this book is really speaking to me. Even more serendipitous on a hike with a friend today she referenced the alchemist quote that was also in this book! (Something like the universe conspires to help you achieve your dreams). Maybe I should reread the alchemist and see how it strikes me now…

The chapter on the purity pillar of caste is so fucked. What the fuck. Hard to believe any of that was real life.

“White” is not a race, it’s just the dominant caste, and those on the lowest rung of the caste system (black people) are the foil to those on the higher rung. This makes so much sense in explaining why other POCs/new immigrants (my mother ugh) immediately buy into racist views. 🤯 also very interesting to read how every society comes up with some random ass arbitrary trait for their own caste system

This book came off my hold list right after i discover that reliant K is a Christian band lol. Altho i googled and it seems that coelho is not really Christian.

Review part 1: I had to watch 5 YouTube videos after to understand (appreciate?) the themes of the book.. actually scratch appreciate. I enjoyed the beautiful writing and vivid settings and characters, the actual Colombian history woven in, but is it too much to ask for books to actually have a plot ._. Pachinko, covenant of water, and h&e grocery store also span multi-gen but did not feel as convoluted.

Idk who wrote the intro for my copy of Jane eyre but the literary style (gothic/realism/romanticism) and genre (Bildungsroman, romance, mystery, fantasy) study is also spot on for shadow of the wind!!! Probably a much closer match to Carlos Ruiz zafon esque books than murakami or Marquez (which is currently giving me a headache) haha.
