Despite being relatively low-stakes, this is such a quietly tragic love story, I almost can't bear to see how it ends.

Very much enjoying this quiet, sorrow-filled love story where nobody is to blame and the reader can sympathize with each character.

Very heavy on description, but shaping up to be an interesting love story set in 1960's China, between an army doctor and a nurse.

Hoo-boy, this is a tough read. Going to have to consult a study guide or something, as I'm really struggling to figure out the character's relations and motivations.

Had to will myself to put it down after an hour this morning, else I'd never get any work done.

Surprisingly entertaining, though I wish the book layout was more professional. Too small typeface and too large margins make for an unpleasant experience. Nevertheless, this is a fun popcorn book.

The slowest of slow burns, but the writing is fantastic.

Yay! Finally got it back from the library and can finish.

Though I'll admit that I've caught my thoughts wandering away from the book while reading, the narrators voice is so clear and unique, I can't help but want to read more. I can tell this is a book I'll thoroughly enjoy when I'm in the absolute right frame of mind, but might not be best-suited for stressful days. The prose is far too rich, the story too slow of a burn, to rip a reader from their distractions.

Okay, 2020, we're on a roll! First, Irving's incredible "The Cider House Rules" and now this. Back-to-back excellent reads. Looking at my unread shelf, I think "Remains of the Day" has to be next. Best shot at keeping the 5-star trend going.

So good that after an hour of reading, I'm considering cancelling all planned work for the morning so I can sit and read another 3 hours to the finish. Alas, responsibility. Sigh.

I hope this turns out the way I hope. Starting to get a bad feeling (no spoilers, please!)

I cannot imagine giving this book less than 5-stars at this point. Simply wonderful, provided you don't mind a very slow build.

Such a great book. As wonderful as it is lengthy.
