Esme and her father and dead mother Lily… so interesting, built around the story of the dictionary’s formulation. I would like to work with words like a lexicographer !!!

This book is to be consumed in small doses. She inspires me to think of my impact on my surroundings - what I can do differently.

I love this already. “Bondmaid” is the first lost word, I think. The child narrator makes the story better.

Scriptorium: writing room in a monastery. Dr. Murray and lexicographers work to catalog all the words of the English language. Wish I had been there!

I have enjoyed hearing the inflection in Molly the Maid’s literal understanding. Now that she is being confused by Rod the bar manager, it isn’t as endearing.

I did not want to enjoy this but have owned the book for years. Suddenly, it’s very good!

I hope I finish. Slow start.

Hannah bonds with a blue-eyed slave girl, Bantu, her first friend. She calls out the Jewish community for failing to take action against the evils of human bondage. The harsh dangers of her own courage emerge.

Excellent and thought-provoking. Not to be consumed in one session.

I love this story!!!

This book is beautifully done. The anticipation of what Lily looked like and her mother’s twisted take on Christianity … and the slow introduction of Julie Coralina Blackwood… add up to a fascinating story.

Wow, of course Kingsolver is a liberal thinker!

Lily is a monster child locked in the attic until a circus arrives in town.

The contrast between Nancy as single woman falling in love and Nancy the leader and spy… a strong page-turning effect. The brutality seems as bad as I’ve ever read.

The handkerchief with the dainty shamrocks is clearly the key to this story about Flora and little Rosie, and later Tillie and Mr. Shaw.
