Giving up half way through. It's just not even remotely science fiction enough to interest me, and way too much a crime/noir book about... still not sure.

Tobias S Buckell is way easier to get through on audio, not actually having to read his terrible sentences. Funny to hear the narrator stumble through them though.

There were about four pages of material that really interested me. Mostly this is wonderful writing about things I don't find particularly special or entertaining.

So far it's not gripping me. I was expecting funny. Not sure why.

I'm not a big fan of noir, but I sometimes enjoy noir+other genre styling.

Gang of Four is one of my favourite characters ever.

Seems quite slow after the break-neck pace of Echopraxia.

I started with the audiobook, but the sound quality was very bad due to it being a digitized book on tape. Switching to the PDF made it a lot easier to continue.

Oh man, this is tedious. How can such a main character be so boring?

Hmmm. Not sure if this is any good or not.

Getting through the book pretty quickly now I have lots of mindless work to do.

Starting up the Culture series again. Last time I listened to this as an audiobook. This time out I'm reading it as an ebook.

Why do the characters have to explain space elevators to each other? Wouldn't everyone know what space elevators are by then?

This is better than I remember it. Not sure it'll hold up past half way though.

Yup, zombie vs demon sorcerer overlord. I mean, not yet, after this really long discussion about whether it's a good idea or not, and what the ethical ramifications might be. But of course it's going to happen, because why the hell wouldn't there be a zombie vs demon sorcerer showdown?

This is following the same kind of path as the first book: A problem has been brewing in a family for a long time, but we don't follow someone in that family. Instead we follow an outsider who comes in, has all the history and problems explained, and then due to being blessed by a god, solves the problem.

7 hours in and I think there is a story underway. I'm not sure. Something to do with demons and zombies.

An hour in, and so far I think the highlight has been the descriptions of food. Otherwise it's been looooong recounting of every word and look and emotion of three or four planning meetings for a road trip.

Also, I predict a love triangle between the new 18 year old girl character and the two young noblemen. I mean, who else deserves the 18 year old girl if not the nobles?

I've only got 10 minutes of the audiobook left to listen to... and I'm not sure I have the will to get to the end.

This book is just utterly shit now. How can something go from being so good to so bad? Everything I liked about the first half is gone, replaced by almost everything I dislike about bad science in my science fiction.

This started really good. But then half way through the story expands out from one soldier's personal experience with war to saving the world/universe/future/human race. It gets VERY stupid, very quickly, but not in a fun way. In fact, it takes such a hard turn into crazy shit-ness that I think it all might be in the main character's head.

I thought this was the other one but it's not, it's the second one, not the fourth one.

Fuckit. I'm not going any further.

The audiobook narrator is very good, but I'm only a bit past where I stopped reading last time, and again I feel like this just isn't for me. It's in no way bad, but there is almost nothing that is gripping me in any way. There is not a single thing that has happened that makes me wonder what will happen next, and not a single character that I particularly care about anything they do or what happens to them.

Last time I tried to read this I stopped after 3 or 4 chapters. This time I'm listening to the audiobook. So far it's better this way.
