I'm continuing on without Juliane. The story actually starts at about 8-9 hours into the 18 hour audiobook. Just remember, budding authors, stuff happening is not plot!

So... sex in a pod? Not sure I prefer that over more backstory, to be honest.

This one might have been a mistake. Juliane and I wanted something to listen to on a looooong car journey, but this book has left us cold. And bored.

I'm enjoying this way more the second time through. Or maybe the third time through, if you count my accidental go through the abridged audiobook.

Issue six! Half way through! Good story telling, but I really want to get on to the main story again. Why so much back story for these characters if they're not going to do some good stuff?

Back to the start! I accidentally bought the Abridged version on Audible, even though the cover art says unabridged.

Starting this up again for the Culture series read-through with Juliane. Last time I read this as a paper book, this time I'm listening to the audiobook.

Issue #5: Good to be getting on with the main story. I'm loving the wood/human/shark raft technology.

Issue #4: totally blown away by this part. Just amazing. I've seen similar things attempted in written fiction before, but in comic form it works way better.

Issue #3: I really enjoy how this is about the end of super heroes (retirements, deaths, defeats, exiles), not the origins.

Issue 2 is also very good. I'm normally not even remotely interested in super hero comics, but this take is still somehow fresh and intriguing, even though I can now see how every postmodern look at the genre from then on has drawn from this work heavily. I love the idea that the costumed vigilantes are all fucked up in some way (fascist, rapist, self-publicist, pervert, etc).

Finished issue 1. It's very good so far. Quite engaging. If I still like it after issue 3, I'll see about buying the whole thing.

I'm past half way, so that means I can review it without finishing it, right?

After a promising start, any progress I thought might be coming along hasn't arrived yet. Only a few months at school, out of a year (I'm guessing) and... what?

Some very cool ideas and interesting characters.

A character called Snake handling snakes was confusing for a while.

This character is worried about this. This character is upset because of this. This character feels this. This character wants to do this.

Was that meant to be a twist? Or was that? It's hard to sustain three novels (or 9 individual short/long stories) by relying on twists, as then nothing is believed, nor expected, nor anything surprising.

Unfortunately this feels much more like the second book, which was a disappointment, than the first book, which I really enjoyed.

I didn't realize Silo part 3 wasn't coming out as a series of short stories, and instead a single novel. I'd been waiting for Dust to be collected into an omnibus. Oops!

Fly, knife, fly!

This book is way more fun this time round. Love the narration by Peter Kenny is really, really good.

This is really good, but would make no sense if this was someone's first Culture novel.

This is my most vague Culture book, having only read it once before and long ago. It's a lot clearer this time, now knowing what is going on a bit earlier.

Reading again because Juliane just finished it and we're going to chat about it on the next SFBRP.

Pretty good fun so far.
