I'm not entirely sure I should do as the Romans did, regardless of where I am geographically speaking.

This seems right up my alley...metaphorically speaking. Not literally. I mean, it's an ebook; couldn't jam it up there even if I wanted.

I'll withhold commentary on this until I've read it in its entirety, but note to self: just start skimming the tie-in issues...they either 1) don't tie in at all and just have "Civil War II" smeared all over the cover to increase sales or 2) rehash, at an oversimplified level, the crux of the conflict.

The idea of Gary Gygax snorting coke and nailing "starlets" is a disconcerting one, to say the least...slamming down mead with the tarrasque, sure; that I'd believe.

I feel like Dave Arneson is the Jack Kirby/Steve Ditko of the RPG world.

(And with that, I do believe I've crafted the nerdiest sentence I've ever written. I have no more Everests to climb.)

It's interesting seeing Howard write a straightforward narrative sans (for the most part) his trademark desert-dry humor.

How do you pick out the coolest guy in the room? You look for the guy covered in cheese curl dust who's wearing an "I believe in THAC0" shirt while knocking back a Mountain Dew and reading a biography about Gary Gygax.

Try not to be jealous of my awesomeness, people.

There's a distinct chance my 3.5-year-old son has been influenced by my taste in stories. Case in point: in telling me a story of his own creation the other day, he included the following exchange:

"This is getting very strange," said Egon. "The only thing we can do is cross the streams."

"No," said Batman.

"I'm not going for that," said Sherlock Holmes.

Fistfights, offal, knifings, chamber pots being dumped willy-nilly, rivers of animal blood, constant screaming and shouting...late 1600s Paris sounds like a pretty idyllic vacation spot.

Feels a lot like the first book...long stretches of nothing happening, but it's okay because the prose is like comfort food and the characters and world are interesting.

Every time I read the words "Barchester Towers" (which is a wonderful book, incidentally), I recall a college classmate in a Victorian lit class talking about how another member of our class's mother used to do a very classy Victorian-inspired dance call "the barechested towers," and I start to giggle. Because that's what people do when they're 38. Giggle at literary boob jokes.
