This is the most hair raising description of pain, actually make that agony, that I've ever read about. I would want nothing to do with this world as a character.

'My first mission was a Waylander. The kids brought me right to it as a sacrifice. How nice of them. They were actually quite upset with me for having killed it. Some of them didn’t even have families to return to. It’s not easy explaining to a kid who was been beaten and sexually abused his entire life that the only person who was ever kind to him is, in fact, a demon planning to betray and eat him.'

This book gives off a really weird vibe. I dunno if it's the cover, or the way the dark energy creeps slowly into the plot. Maybe it's both, but this one has a really weird energy and aura to it. I can't wait to find out more about this author's backstory, because clearly there's a secret to his approach. I would bet quite a bit on it.

"The man who wrote those cursed pages discovered a way to travel to a different world. A horrible place; a place where your most terrifying nightmare is a birdsong in comparison. Going there changed him. And he went again, and again, each time leaving apiece of himself there and bringing a piece of that place back in him. You boys think that sap you smoked was something? That was a blink. It was the death of a gnat."

“... it was as if he were a member of all of these religions. As if the only way for him to understand them—to make the reader understand them—was to submerge himself in them. I remember one chapter on The Laughing God where this entire village, buried deep in some sweltering rain forest, worshiped a deity who’s answer to bounty and famine, to illness and health, to birth and death, was laughter."

It was there, in that desolate trail, that several carrion birds began to peck at my still, defeated body. The scavengers were smaller than crows, with matte, ash-tinted hides and dull beaks. I had lain without food for three consecutive days so my vision was suspect. Yet even in my compromised state I understood these birds were unlike any I had ever seen.."

This one's odd in that quaint, funny little English way. Like Alice in Wonderland but with a whiny main character.

There was a guy near his body called Stew who was able to point us in the direction of this factory. Said you were probably going this way. Nice guy. Said he’d keep an eye on the body for us.” “Brendt is dead?” said Mallysa. “God, I hope so,” said Cassoulet. “Can you imagine trying to live like that? With all your guts hanging out? Yuck. No. Gross. I couldn’t do it.”

“All we have to do is navigate this dark forest that we know nothing about and travel far enough to get out of cannibal territory without knowing how far that is. While being hunted by people who know this forest very well.”
