They did it! I’m probably thinking too much into this, but could they be more of a conduit. Or is this just the magic system.

Oh geez. Oh god. You let your guard down for one moment…. But maybe this is grandma’s apprentice.

Okay… once again I’m thinking way too hard on this book. The question was cat, bird, or dog. It’s good to be prepared.

Reunited and it feels so….ominous. I really wonder what Fable had told them day 1. Was it instructions or some veiled code. Wait. It’s something about the forest not the current spell.

I like that we’re not just making the teenaged sorcerer ready to battle and fight. No typical YA Protagonist who level a field of soldiers despite being a fairly new apprentice. Also KITTY!

Of course this book has the audacity to get good when I have to put it down. We get to the point we’ve been waiting for. The summary of the book tells us Antonia is in trouble and geez. That’s an understatement.

Also there is a least a thin veiled jab at certain real world things here.

That ducking ditch. Of course Antonia had every right not to trust them. What a callous and calculated move. I don’t even think this could be redeemed by lawful good. Lawful sure but that wasn’t a good move. That was sneaky and calculated.

Okay. I was wrong. But it’s so cute that Rook needed Sun. And that Sun showed up. Def a star crossed lovers because their teachers are friendly rivals. But Antonia is right. Gotta give some space.

Okay. Maybe I was wrong with my theory. We shall see. I do like we got more lore and we are getting away from enemies. Tutors at least.

What a stressful situation. The magic system in this universe is rightfully limiting allowing for suspense. We’re definitely getting a hint here when Rook isn’t the one with residual curse.

I was at a party recently and the topic of taking a ghostly lover came up, and if physical intimacy was possible. With this damn chapter we were probably about to find out.

What an unreliable narrator! The denial is thick in them. I do like that our enemies are getting friendlier. We do get more lore in this chapter about what dangers might be awaiting Rook.

Ooo. The sorcerers are fighting. But we come back to the gifting of names. The taking on of an apprentice. What is she hiding???

This book is doing a lot better job of seamlessly using gender neutral pronouns than I am. Geez. Both rivals are they/thems. I love this.

Plus the secrets out. I love the suspense of will Rook get in trouble or is Antonia being dramatic.

Oh we’ve gotten to the black cat. I guess the writing was on the page saying Rook’s the golden retriever.

Never ask what could possibly go wrong! Everything. Everything could go wrong.

This is an interesting world set where magic is not fully hidden but highly regulated. I’m not sure how far we’ll get into that.

When you don’t have magic how can you learn from the best sorcerer in the world? Help her with technology that she can’t use. Also she gives off Grandma Tsunade vibes.

The part of this chapter about finding photo graphs really struck a chord. Over Christmas I went through a similar scenario of going through pictures of my grandmother and they can really make you feel something.

I just get really happy when she finally makes Kimchi.

She records her first album she’ll release under Japanese Breakfast then goes on her honeymoon thinking she’ll return to become just another average American family. Bet this was a good surprise. Also what a lovely honeymoon, and great product placement opp for DuoLingo. lol

Nope… not out of his system yet. But she been desperately trying to fill this void or get rid of the memories. But really all she needed was some Korean influence.

Why have I never thought to do “my heart will go on” as a karaoke song???

Sure vacation after all that seems like the right thing to do, but we could all see things going terribly wrong. Then it did. Guess we’ll see if he got it out of his system.

Chapter 14. Lovely.

Probably my favorite chapter - at least so far. Talking about how weird funerals are to navigate. Grieving in your own way. Then touching note from the art teacher, and the talk about going through someone close’s belongings as if they’re a stranger. It’s so moving.

“I’ve just never met someone like you before.”

I guess when your mom dies you remember everything about that day. Down to the slanted eyes of the goats…. Which, honestly, are haunting every time I think about them.

I too cry when I see Mariska Hargitay.

What a beautiful wedding. Such joy to distract from the recent struggle.
