I’M HATING THIS 😭

After a disappointing dark academia novel that was also mentally onerous, I’m banking on this being candy floss lmao

There’s noooo chance I’d have made it this far if it weren’t for the audiobook

Vita Nostra requires its reader completes a marathon of the strange and nonsensical, persevering without any hope that the unintelligible with become clear.

(I’ve been hold there is a payoff at the very end. So I’m in this until I figure out what tf is happening)

What on earth is happening in this book??

If my bestie Hannah hadn’t said that she hated this book at first and then it transformed into something else entirely, I’d give up on this.

I can feel myself getting slumpy. I’m itching to listen to something else 🫠

Y’all. I don’t know what’s happening but I will not be questioning it.

(What’s happening is that I keep picking up books that have burned holes into the back of my head as they languish on my shelves for YEARS. I have waited so long to be in the mood for this 😭)

Somehow I’m already halfway through?

Things that are irritating me:
- referring to POCs skin colour as “chocolate” (Google why you shouldn’t use foods as skin tone descriptors if you don’t know)
- how insanely quickly the FMC 💥 There’s no tension. It’s boring

Time to cleanse the palate!

The best way for me to describe the pacing of Foxglove is janky.

I’m enjoying it, sure, and the audiobook is once again elevated because of Kristin Atherton’s expert performance. But I’d enjoy it more if it was a story that swept you up in its current, instead of the fits and starts we’re left with

The gasp I just gusped in public 😲😲😲

I hope Foxglove lives up to the gorgeous prose and moody Victorian atmosphere that had me falling in love with Signa and Death

This isn’t bad by any means. And yet it’s just not working for me 😭

The voice is terribly young considering the protagonist is 20 years old and it’s written in 1st person ☹️

🚨Please tell me if it gets better and if I should stick with it. Otherwise, I’m going to DNF 🚨

Dragging in the middle

I expected to adore this 🧐

Unfortunately, I think One Dark Window is going to fall in the category of YA fantasy that’s heavy on the *young* and extremely light on the *adult*

It’s giving Once Upon A Broken Heart (2⭐️) when I hoped for Belladonna (5⭐️)

What a relief to finally read a book where the will they / won’t they push and pull is actually believable. When the characters get in their own way, it makes sense.

Also, while I wish this was voiced by two separate narrators, J. F. Harding does an excellent job bringing this indie story to life

I’ve had this by my bed for WEEKS. Waiting. Hoping. Daring for tonight to be *the night* my mood reader brain says yes.

I was not expecting hateful banter along with magic scuffles and ooooo I love it

I don’t want to call it too early (because twice is a coincidence, three times is a pattern)

…So instead I’ll say that I *miiiiiight* finally be ready to commence Dark Academia Season™

The female narrator is decent 4/5
The male narrator’s acting and accents are rough 2.5/5

Alsoooo the prose is lyrical and purple in turns

I’m still liking this and I understand why some folks adore it, but I also think the novel could have used a stronger developmental edit. The book would have packed a strong punch without the waffling

However, I’m extremely sick of woman and men being referred to as “female” or “males” in real like or in fiction

I think I’d probably be semi-bored if reading the physical copy. The audiobook, however?

Moody, romantic, strange. I’m into it

I didn’t meant to start this. It auto-played after I finished my last audiobook. But then… I was caught, wholeheartedly, by the vibes and the many unanswered questions

Am I finally ready to start reading spooky/vibey/autumnal books???
