I need authors who write insta-love to get their shit together and SHOW ME WHY THEY LOVE ONE ANOTHER

This book takes place in Sydney, Australia, and has a cast of Americans, Canadians, and Aussies.

As a Canadian who’s lived in Sydney, I can tell you that much of this books reads like someone wanting to prove how well they know each culture.

Here’s the problem: these moments don’t feel natural. They’re clunky. And often, they don’t actually move the story forward

What a strange book. If you read the blurb, you’d probably think there’s no reason for it *not* to work

Well…

It’s a flimsy thing, and I’m struggling to pin down what precisely isn’t work. Big picture? The writing feels off. The pacing is choppy. And smut is bland bland bland

I needed something breezy after a bunch of heavy reads. It’s the only contemporary romance available on my Libby right now and I went in blind… as someone who doesn’t like musicals I’m not sure how this will go but I’m happy to give it a shot

Still chugging along with this one. Still skipping ahead to read random pages (or chapters 🫣) because I’m desperate for things to move forward *at pace*

Ahhh the heartbreak of something beginning with all the promise in the world, only for it to unravel 🫤

Also, I’m tryyyyying to summon the empathy required to feel for Rowan. Trying and failing.

This is starting to make very little sense. Two months has passed and yet the reader isn’t privy to any of the supposed conversations that must have happened.

In lieu of that, we have to just… believe that there’s all this growing tension between them?

Also, I need this man to stop getting hard in public. Like please settle down. You can show a character is attracted to the FMC without resorting to—that.

Looooving the writing so far, and both narrators have voices like honey 🤌🏼🤌🏼

It’s re-read time!

I was one of the lucky bastards who received an ARC, and while I feel decently prepared to dive right in (given how closely I read Paradox the first time around), I figure there’s no harm in freshening up on the lives of our morally-grey cast

If this were written by any other author, I'd DNF :(

I still might. But my friend Joe told me it all comes together at the end... I feel like I'm close enough that perhaps it's worth it. Maybe?

After two heavy, heavy novels, it’s time for a cosy palate cleanser 💕🧡

American King is quite a bit longer than it needs to be. I find myself perpetually flipping forward to read ahead, a clear indication that I’m not entirely engaged in the story and keen for things to move faster.

All that said, I’m still enjoying it enough to keep going ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have such a soft spot for YA that tackles difficult topics

I’ve had this on my phone for a long while. After Masters of Death made me feel like death, I swapped over to a mafia/gang romance 🙃

So far, I don’t have many complaints. The way the narrator says any line of a male character’s dialogue is 50/50 fine or flat. The book though? It’s doing what it says on the tin

I can’t believe I’m typing this… I think I need to DNF.

The lack of dialogue tags and not giving characters names is driving me bonkers.

I’m so sick of the big cast talking nonsense about “the game” repeating the same lines over and over. I want ACTION.

Worst of all? The bickering and talking in circles triggered an honest-to-god migraine

It took 3 months for my library to acquire the audiobook but ah-ha! Finally!

I do hope to love this 🥺🤞🏼

Not only is this probably my new favourite book, but this is the best duet narration I’ve ever listened to

Not much is happening, and yet I am CAPTIVATED

The mystery of Mark Trevena is wickedly effective in pulling the reader through the story via Tristan’s eyes

Has anything substantial happened? Nope.

I get that we’re setting the scene; Evangeline’s lost memories, the persistence of intuition, nefarious players.

All I’m saying is that if I were reading the physical book instead of the audiobook, I’d be bored to tears

I want to see where this story goes…but lord, the female narrator is driving me batty 🥴

Once you notice her strange ticks, it’s all you pick up
