While Lessa Lamb’s voice is appealing, I’m not a fan of the *way* she speaks. In particular, she does this strange thing where she slows down and annunciates the last couple words in a sentence one. at. a. time.

On the writing side of things, I could not tell you the difference between the men. Personality traits? They have none lol. I’m barely able to picture them 🤪

Re-reading. This time, the audiobook.

When a 5-star read that truly blew my mind comes through on Libby, who am I to say no

Ahhhh, now we’re talking. Angst with more angst, a Byronic love interest who’s actually a cinnamon roll, and this alien world’s equivalent of a top tier AO3 tag: f*ck or die.

Both main characters have heartbreaking backstories which I’m sure will make things all the sweeter when they find their HEA 🥰

Ruby Dixon really just wrote “hot warmth” 😂🙈

Turns out, the only thing I have the mental capacity to listen to right now is this low-stakes, mediocre sci-fi romance series.

I'm spending so much time taking in news reports and then thinking about said reports that I genuinely don't have anything left.

I really dislike narrator. I cannot stand the way in which he speaks there’s another narrator, who he is very reminiscent of; they end all of their sentences with a subtle uptick and a puff of breath.

If I have to be cringing at every word of dialogue as well as the exposition as well as Alana’s thoughts 🥴🥴🥴

The desire for all the characters to have clear communication is nice, I’ll give the book that

However, this story is a character driven one. That doesn’t work when the author skims over the majority of the character work

Okay so yeah the smut is pretty good but I can’t tell the two MMCs apart. They genuinely have the same personality

It’s not thematically appropriate for October, but it’s what my heavy soul needs

It’s actually really cute and adorable and funny now 🥰

I really didn’t like this at first. It was boring and lacked any of the sparkle and joyousness expected.

Things have improved enough for me to stick with it. Frederick’s character is pretty endearing in how lost he is lol

That, and I’m not sure what I’d rather be listening to while walking my dog 🙃

The narrators are PHENOMENAL.

First thoughts:
✔️The way she writes anxiety and depression is so spot on
✔️ Past lives with violent ends is a killer choice and ratchets up the angst
✔️ Sonny’s out of body experiences during bad sex was absolutely me in my twenties

Forty-million years after I first saw Janessa recommend this book, I’m finally reading it.

And it’s everything I needed right now 😆🫶🏼

Fucking hilarious. No info-dumps. Immediately draw into the story. Immediately endeared to the two main characters

Unfortunately the pacing with this novel is all sorts of wonky and damn near flatlines around the midpoint of the book.

The plot points are too weak, and I’m left scratching my head as to why I’m continuing to read the book. The writing is unfortunately mediocre (shocking considering the author) and the ‘big threat’ is periodically left at the door which makes absolutely no sense

So far this has been a pretty mixed bag. I think a lot could have been cut down, especially in the first third of the novel.

Enjoyment levels upped as soon as the FMC and MMC began spending time together. You could tell Amber had fun writing any scenes that had them bantering

I hate the male narrator, Wen Ross 😒😖

The writing is pretty awful. I’ll stick with it for now in order to see what all the fuss is about

Sweet, perhaps a little too sweet.
Adorable MMCs with uncool senses of humour… perhaps a little too uncool?

I’ll stick with it, but this might be an example of it being a ‘me problem’

The talking sword is genius 😂

I don’t really understand how they’re in love but I’m going with it. It really is a fun-as-hell romp that’s wonderfully refreshing for the genre

I’m still struggling with the language. I realize it’s not fair for me to be disappointed that it’s not lyrical like her debut, A Dowry of Blood. There are a sprinkling of lines that hark back to the 70’s, when the book takes place, but there’s something about it that feels disjointed, almost like it should have either gone all in or stuck with all-neutral diction
