The early pacing of this book is a bit all over the place but arghhhhh it's just so fun. Once the 2 main plots get going, it going gets.

Probs enjoying this more than b2 but thats a low bar. The character work, especially for the antagonists is so lacklustre. Cartoonish villain despite the premise being fucking dope

I adore the totally realised and complex family relations. Hilo's sensitivity, Kaul Sen's unforgiving sterness but adoration for Shae, Shae's insecurity, Lan's patience and empathy underlined by him dealing with the stress of his position. So so good.

So happy to be back with these character. Hard to believe it's nearly 4 years since I read this
