Pretty fun, interesting setting, but I wouldn't say I'm super hooked yet

This book has been utterly, utterly brilliant. Its story and these characters are gonna stay with me for a long time.

That stretch of 100 pages where all of *that* happened, I can only compare to the story climaxes of A Storm Of Swords. Insane.

This is some pretty incredible stuff. So much meaning and depth conveyed in the dialogue, and some really tender moments in the inner-monologue. The characterisation in general is also just v strong

Still, I dislike ggk's approach to the writing of the women in his stories.

That said, this is probs my fav GGK yet

Having read the translated latin passage that explains Caligula's plan of making his horse consul--this so obviously reads as "all of you senators are so inept, my horse could do your job". Surprised Beard doesn't mention that

I really like her arguments for why much of what was attributed to Romulus and the early Roman state was more than likely conjured up (organically) after the fact

A very compelling analysis of the Cataline conspiracy (interesting place to start a history of Rome). Was it like the red scare, the beer hall putsch, or maybe even something similar to the French revolution? Mary Beard makes solid arguments for all possibilities

A lmao @ her trashing Cicero's poetry (he was the first *artist* to put out a bonafide flop)

One thing (among many) dcc consistently does well is making me excited for the next book, especially near the end

Reading 3 different books from the same author in the same series within a month rather than having like 2-4 months between? Says a lot. Enjoying this series a lot.
