aPriL does feral sometimes Natural talent! I wish it paid....

When I took that national test they give all 8th graders (do they still do that? - it was 1960? - something), I tested at reading 520 words a minute and 100% comprehension. I had no idea before this I even HAD a reading speed, or that anyone would care.

[Because it is on my mind due to recent political events, I am going to natter on bit. Actually, no one did care if I read fast, because I was a girl. Back then, I was expected to marry at age 18 and give the US four more kids, especially since abortion was illegal, and that is all my nation wanted of me. But the counselor DID mention I read faster than anyone in my junior high school.

The test also showed I should go to college and study to be an architect, which gave my male counselor a good laugh. As it was, girls had to take 3 years of cooking and three years of sewing to graduate, and it was thought that to ask girls to have only two years of math and science, or any further studies, such as more math, science and a foreign language, were a waste, as my school counselor advised me to forget about any college, and the idea of me being an architect was ludicrous. After all, girls were forbidden even taking shop and learning how to handle machines and tools!

I was terrifically bored at the education track for girls, so I read a lot on my own because I loved learning. As it was, though, most of society only wanted professional women teachers and nurses, so, that is mostly all women could train for if they did go to college, unless they were exceptionally brilliant or geniuses. I was not that.

Without much to do, I read a lot, which is probably why I got to be so fast at reading.

BTW, physical fitness was also believed at the time to hurt a female's uterus and prevent pregnancy. As it was, President John Kennedy insisted girls take PE five days a week anyway to defeat the Soviet Union. : p

If you have daughters, please teach them mechanics and encourage academics. Ok, end of activist feminism message!

: )
