“My friend, if you’re reading this, then I’ve moved on to other shores. Always know that I didn’t choose an easy life, no one in our line of work does, but it was one full of marrow and hopefully made a difference in some small way. The best part of it all was knowing you, Kyle. You were the finest student I ever had and a hell of a case officer. But beyond that, you were like a son to me. I will miss you most of all in whatever land I’m off to next. If I could leave you with one piece of advice, it’s this: Remember to live fully and not just exist, as is all too common in our profession after a while. Keep close those values and interests that make you feel most alive. You already know what they are… just don’t let the nature of our work erode them. Cling to them ferociously, for those things will become beacons pointing the way in the years to come. Regarding this property and cabin, use it how you see fit, but don’t feel tethered to it. And please look in on Heather and Zoe from time to time. I’ve grown very fond of them. I wish you many fine trails ahead, amigo.”
