20.3 – We read (Fall 2011, 20.4)

The Lifeboat by Charlotte Rogan

I was pleased to find that this novel is a series of journals and this is referenced within the text at numerous places. I enjoyed the book and it is also an "unreliable narrator" book; one of my favorite kinds of narration!

Deedee | 2284 comments Task 20.7 - A Poet's Non-Poetry

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joyce_Ca... , Joyce Carol Oates has 9 published volumes of poetry, and a 10th one “forthcoming”. I read one of her novels:

I'll Take You There: A Novel (2002) by Joyce Carol Oates

+20 Task

Task Total: 20

Grand Total: 525 + 20 = 545

Review: Joyce Carol Oates has said that this is her “most” autobiographical novel. The novel is centered on a neurotic, obsessive young woman from rural upper New York State who is attending college in Syracuse, New York. Most of the novel occurs in the 1962-1963 timeframe. The story begins as she is accepted into the expensive but desirable sorority of Kappa Gamma Pi. The story takes off from there. The style is unusual, impressionistic but not sparse. Recommended for those who enjoy “literary fiction”.

Am I mistaken that we are using their classification for YA?

Perhaps Liz knew this was a YA classification at BPL, I do find it so; I think we have researched it previously.

10.5– Teddy Bear’s Picnic

From the Hot New Releases list:

A Lady Cyclist's Guide to Kashgar by Suzanne Joinson A Lady Cyclist's Guide to Kashgar by Suzanne Joinson

When I chose this one because I loved the cover, it was underrated because it was so new. Before I could read it, it surpassed the 250 and I almost took it off my list. I'm so glad I kept it on the list, because I really enjoyed it. It also had elements of other tasks, although not enough for style points. A portion of the book is a road trip and half is told through letters and notes. I enjoyed both stories and loved that the reader was able to figure out the connections between past and present before the characters had the information.

Arch of Triumph (1945) by Erich Maria Remarque (Paperback, 464 pages)

+10 Task
+10 Style: 2. Lost in Translation (10 points): (written originally in German)
+ 05 Style: 4. Oldies - 25 to 75 years old: 5 points (1937-1987)

Task Total: 10 + 10 + 05 = 25

Grand Total: 545 + 25 = 570

Review: Erich Maria Remarque’s most famous novel is All Quiet on the Western Front. He wrote several more novels, including Arch of Triumph. This novel was set in France during 1938-1939 timeframe. The characters were (mainly) refugees from Germany and other parts of Europe, living in Paris without legal papers. Some of the events in the novel would have been shocking to the reading public in 1945, but are not as shocking today. Remarque captures very well the “how does it FEEL” aspect of being in untenable situations. Recommended for those interested in fiction connected to World War II and/or fiction centering on the life of refugees.

The War Of The Worlds by H.G. Wells

review:
The War of the Worlds is a classic piece of fiction that has to be read! I'm glad I did it. The language and style was a bit challenging because there were quite a few words I (English isn't my mother tongue) didn't understand since it isn't commonly used in recent movie, television and literature English. Therefor it really was educating for me.
The narrator describes quite chillingly how he experienced the days of Martian invasion on Earth. Especially imagining the setting the story is set and the time it was written it's truly amazing and gripping. The narrating character is nice and I felt with him almost throughout the entire time. Marvelous book!

I looked at that and I believe that edition to contain the Fifth Queen trilogy whereas I read only the first book of the three.

Thank you for bringing that to our attention. I'll try to get some help separating those omnibus editions out and setting up the trilogy to look like a series so all GR members can see the differences.

A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire #2) (1998) by George R.R. Martin

+ 20 Task

Review: This is book #2 of Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” Series. It is a direct continuation of book #1 A Game of Thrones . It is really necessary to have read book #1 to understand book #2. This is a high fantasy novel set in a medieval-style society. (The author has listed England’s 15th Century “War of the Roses” as one of his inspirations for the series.) There is more action (violence) and more magic in this novel than in the first one. Recommended for people who have read and enjoyed A Game of Thrones.
