I've gotta do this too...have so many books on hand, I've stopped even looking at the newly available freebies...sigh. I'll make my official start date May 1, and set my goal by then!
NICE IDEA, Val!!!
Josie, you are making great progress so far. Thanks to your rating I`ll move some books down the pile.I think I should try to use freebies at the end of the month before starting another monthly reading challenge. I am ashamed to report that I have close to 500 of them and do not see an end in sight.
Lol Val, I have 780 so don't feel too bad... :PI go through stages of reading lots of freebies so probs won't read any for a month. I've liked all the ones I've read so far, apart from the two shorts, both which were rubbish. For some reason as well I was reading romances which kind of freaked me out lol!
Well, I just checked and I'm right in the middle of you two with 612 (currently) eFreebies TBR. How many have I read? SEVEN. Not 7-teen, not 7-d, 7. LOL!I really need to join/stick to this challenge!
7 freebies ever? Lol, that's awesome :PI've probably read about 50 BUT most of them are shorts so I'll go count up full lengths :)
Wow....7?I admit I reread 3 books but I do not count them. I only have 4 shorts read.
Which of the 7 would you recommend? Just trying to weed out the bad ones.

You take the cake Amy...I hope half of those were worth reading. You still have to plan for those 267 remaining and any others you may add before the year is out :)
I just noticed this. I'm going to backdate my start date because I have read a bunch of freebies for another challenge that started April 15th. I'm setting the goal low because I'd rather make my main reading focus on books I paid money for.
Goal (subject to change):

LOL! Yep, 7. That's really sad. But, good news is that most were full-length and rec'd a rating of 3-5★. Not bad. Just need to read more of them, that's all. Wonder if there's a Hoarders episode about eBook collecting. ;)

Well your 7 beats my 1. I really need to get onto the reading. There are just so many books that I sometimes get overwhelmed by all the free ones I have. lol
I'm definitely a ebook hoarder too. most people would definitely think I have a problem with the amount of ebooks I have, but I just can't stop downloading the free ones.
Paris wrote: I'm definitely a ebook hoarder too. most people would definitely think I have a problem with the amount of ebooks I have, but I just can't stop downloading the free ones. I think you've found the right place.
Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ wrote: "Paris, I guess you could include your ebook collection in your will of something."lol That's a great idea!
Great idea, Val. Hell. I'll be dead then, so what's it matter what anyone thinks, yah? >;)
Like Seuss said, "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." (... or your dead, so it doesn't matter a lick anyhow. LOL!!)
Ok, I NEED to do this challenge. I have decided that I'm going to pick a month (maybe August) when I will read nothing but freebies! At least that's my plan at the moment. I maybe break it up a bit periodically with a more mainstream favorite. We'll see. Anyhoo, here's my plan: I'd like to list where I got the book; the title/author (obviously); if it's part of series and if so, if it was good enough to entice me to buy the next book; genre; rating (incl. cover art b/c some of them are hilariously bad); and a mini-review.
I'll save the next post in the thread for my list and post as I read any. I really am hoping I can make myself dive into the freebie pool for a whole month. I'm interested to see how many I can read during that time.
{{My READ list}}1. Kiss at Your Own Risk by Stephanie Rowe [6 July 2012 | ★★★½☆]
2. Are We Still On For Tonight? Dating During the Zombie Apocalypse by Evelyn Lafont [6 July 2012 | ★★★☆☆]
3. 'Til We Meet Again by Stacey Kennedy [6 July 2012 | ★★★☆☆]
4. Be My Vampire Tonight by Renee Field [6 July 2012 | ★★★☆☆]
5. TBD
Way to go, Steph! A whole month? That's brave! Well we'll be cheering you on and I'll be really interested to see your ratings and reviews :)
OK - Steph, you've convinced me. I'm trying to use my freebies on the Bingo Challenge. So far I've read:1. Seduced by the Wolf 6/22/12 - Free download from Kobo June 2011.
2. Skylark 6/20/12 - NetGalley (are we including those?)
3. Shift 6/28/12 - Netgalley
4. Fifty Shames of Earl Grey 6/24/12 NetGalley
5. Something Strange and Deadly 6/24/12 Edelweiss
6. Fire 7/7/12 - Library Thing/Author
7. The People of Forever Are Not Afraid 7/6/12 NetGalley
8. Deadworld 7/16/12 Kobo freebie
I'm not entirely sure I'll be jumping up and down over my decision, but I really want to get a lot of these read. They are just piling up (virtually, of course as they're all eBooks). I can feel their little beady eyes on me. LMAO!! ;)Like I said, I'm sure I'll have to break up the indy reads w/a couple of mainstream faves, but I'm going to try to stick to it as much as possible. May just start in July instead of putting it off until Aug, which would give me more time to crap out.
Go, AH, Go! :D
Steph wrote: "I'm not entirely sure I'll be jumping up and down over my decision, but I really want to get a lot of these read. They are just piling up (virtually, of course as they're all eBooks)."I see your point. I mean, it's not because it's free that you are not obligated to read them.
I really like that you will make time to come up with some sort of review too. I'm not big on words so I can only applaud your dedication but if you can put a few more than I liked it...it would encourage me to bump it up the freebie reading list.
I will try to fill the time in-between Bingo with one freebie. I may not get as much done but at least it'll be something.
(Edited 8/30/2012)Okay, going to try for:
✔
Sheepfarmer's Daughter by Elizabeth Moon ★★★★☆ Fairly traditional fantasy genre, definitely military. Summing up the parts does not give an idea how good this was (sounds very formula but did not read that way). Baen freebie
There Will Be Dragons by John Ringo. Baen freebie✔
50 Ways to Hex Your Lover by Linda Wisdom ★★★☆☆ overall an enjoyable read but a little uneven (one minute chuckling away at excellent bunny slipper humor and the next cringing at scenes that mention "labia"); good story, annoying ghost, implausible romance/sex scene, first book in series really failed to explain how the young witches came to be exiled. Fairly original although the paranormals pretty much what you would expect for vampires, witches, dwarves, ghosts, etc.
The Summons: A Goblin King Prequel by Shona Husk✔
Immortal Coil by C.I. Black ★★★★✩ 3½ stars. Once initial concept accepted, author writes a surprising plausible world. Did not read like a freebie or like a first time author. Fast paced, likable characters.✔
She's Gotta Be Mine by Jennifer Skully oh dear, I just read (August 30, 2012) and am not sure how to rate so will put a longer note than needed for challenge. On the plus side, it absolutely did not read like a freebie and had some funny moments. The whole setup was pretty silly with everyone under-reacting to a marriage breaking up and doing implausible things. I mentally made a drinking game of taking a shot every time her butt was mentioned or admired, two shots for when she was doing the admiring, and three shots if author used a synonym for butt (she slipped exactly once and referred to as "bottom"; after counting more than 50 butt references was afraid to really start drinking). Author had character dwell way too much on her assets. I tend not to find small town nastiness an enjoyable read even if some of the gossiping was funny. The sex scenes, while not bad at all, felt like were part of a completely different story and were slow to show up (possibly from the erotica and erotic paranormal mysteries author writes under pseudonym). Slow to show up, vavoom , then back to regular story style—I liked the romance and even the sex scenes but did not flow well. Briefly, I thought I might have another game going of how often she mentioned "clitoris" but that did quit repeating. So guess this is one to judge for yourself; at least it's free (actually touted as being number one on freebie lists).
Slumber by Samantha Young
Wolf Signs by Vivian Arend
Wolf at the Door by Christine Warren
A Touch of Greek by Tina Folsom
Suite Scarlett by Maureen Johnson
The Shadow of the Lion by Mercedes Lackey. Baen freebie
Ordinary Angels by India Drummond
Kissed in Paris by Juliette Sobanet
Hollowland by Amanda Hocking
Foxy's Tale by Karen CantwellWere free when downloaded; ones published by Baen are permanently free in the library on their website only at http://www.baenebooks.com/c-1-free-li... ; otherwise were kindle free ones unless noted.
I am trying for a freebie between Bingo. I decided on
. I'm only 9% into the book, so far the guy had to change body because his died and is now in the body of a woman...and her soul is still there so she is giving him some pain in the body control department. So far I find it very funny.
Valerie, I have this one on my kindle as well. I was going to read it for a dragon challenge! Sounds a little weird but fun!And Steph - more power to you! After reading some of the freebies, I'm not sure I could handle it. Every once in awhile I come across an author that's good, but so much is just NOT. I'm excited to see what you are reading and saying, though.
Val & Leslie, I've no doubt that I'm going to have mix it up and not do a "freebie-only" month. But, I am going to try to focus on freebies only as much as possible. I'm runnin' with the idea and will start in July. I've got several MUST-READ series books that I'll be throwin' in the mix, but otherwise, here goes nuthin'! LOL!
Ok, ladies, I've finished my BSB read, so I'm starting on my first freebie tonight:
. Too bad the Apple Kindle app doesn't allow users to create personalized lists. Anyway, I'll be updating my master list, here: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/8...
I finished Kiss at Your Own Risk this AM and really enjoyed it. Stephanie's writing always makes me laugh. Her characters and the worlds she creates are a trip. In this one we had a cross-stitching warrior who could turn into flame-boy like in the Fantastic Four. ;)
I'll be continuing on with the series, which is good b/c I had already purchased #2-3. *cough*book-hoarder*cough*
Not sure which one is up next; will report back soon. :)
Last night, I read three more freebies:
Each was a bit odd, but oddly enjoyable.
1. Chick had serious issues, but was a riot in her "I'm on a mission and the zombies are ruining it for me" adventures. New2Me author. Liked the cover. I'm not sure if this one is a series or not, but if it is I will probably not read any more unless they are also free.
2. Love Stacey Kennedy. Her characters are sexy supes. In this one, an interior designer purchases a chaise. A (formerly) 25 year-old Civil War soldier's spirit has been attached to it, his favorite chaise, for years. Bing, bang, boom ... hot smexin' ... the end. LOL! I will continue reading Stacey's books - free or not.
3. First, this cover makes me giggle. It's Zorro! Anyway, this one started out great. Really good, if quickie world building. Liked the supe dudes introduced. They are at a bachelor auction. Vamp dude ends up with prude, or so we/they think. Not the case. Things get weird. HEA. The end. Um, not sure the others will be any better, but I wouldn't mind knowing what happens w/the other two supe dudes and their mates, who are friends of the chick who "end up with" the vamp.
Valerie ~ Val Hall ~ wrote: "@ Deborah: Did you get [bookcover:The Summons: A Goblin King Prequel] because it looked like a cast from Supernatural?"No, just free and right genre. Husband such a fan of Supernatural he replays DVR'd episodes so much I no longer like the durn showLOL
These are great reads. Unfortunately for every freebie I read, I download 10 more. Are we counting audio books too?
LoL, I gave a try at
by Moira Rogers from AllRomance. It was short on character developpement but I liked the concept of the bar. It was my first read from this author. I had this nice looking cover on my TBR pile for a long time and I'm giving it a try
.I am no fan of western books but Ilona Andrews commented in the review that it was Wild West with grit, similar to PRIEST scenes out of the city. Now that I need to check for myself.
July 2012 - July 20135/10
1.
by Samantha Young I was randomly clicking around GR and saw a few recommendations for this book and decided to check it out, only to discover I already owned it. I've never read a book with a werewolf as a main character and was surprised I really liked it, already finished the other 2 books in the series.
2.
by Amanda HockingI had recently read all of another series by this author and have had this from forever so picked it up. I liked it, but I felt something was missing I never got super hooked like I did with her other series, but I do plan on reading the 2nd book.

I hear you Heather, the freebies pile is like the pink elephant in the room. You know it's there but don't want to acknowledge it. I am delighted that some of you were brave enough to tackle that freebie pile. Especially if you can help me make good reading choices. Maybe a thread like bump it up or trash it for freebies?
I have a few Samantha Young 1st in a series too. I should check it out. Thanks Heather.

You tell yourself that it has a shiny cover or it`s cheap...and you will get around to read it...sometime. Well guess what, you need a reading challenge to get started!
Rules are simple:
- Any genre allowed
- Books must have been purchased at ridiculus rebate price or a freebie
- As many books that you feel you need to read but make it a challenge so more than 1
- If you like you can even tell us when and where you got this particular gem of a book...and why
- Re-reads are allowed but...better discover something new
- Page count: novellas allowed but preferably over 20 pages to make it interesting.
- Re-post your list with an update when you feel the need to.
Duration: 1 year from your starting date maximum
Note:
Not mandatory but consider that some of the freebies are from authors that need to be discovered and are counting on you to spread the word. I'm thinking that some of the books you are going to read will be indie books.
I'm saying that it would be nice of you to rate (Solid: ★★★★★,Empty: ☆☆☆☆☆ ) the books.
Write a line or two to interest others in reading the book (I rarely write reviews so I cannot ask of you...but you can).
