Sandy hello,

I'll be picking your recs - unfortunately I'm drowning in studying for tomorrow's History exam (crucial for me getting enough points to get my ass in a college I want), so I'll post them tomorrow - or if I have enough of Henrik VIII, Medieval Wars and so, I'll do them during my study break. Anyway - looking forward to it! ^^

SandyC (sandyc88) | 1287 comments Skandia, you have some really great books on your TBR shelf. I have recommended some books on your shelf, as well as ones that are new to you. If nothing suits, I am happy to try again!

1. Mad as a March hare: Both The Time Traveler's Wife and The Book Thief have an original premise. One features a relationship that is hampered by the husband's habit of disappearing at any given moment to travel through time; the other is set in WWII Germany and is narrated by Death.

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

2. Non Compos Mentis: To Kill a Mockingbird contains lots of legal drama (among other things). The Handmaid's Tale deals with a disturbing futuristic society in which Fundamentalists rule. Or, you could visit the magical world of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1) by J.K. Rowling

3. (Not So) Sweet 16: Meet one of my favorite literary Alpha Males, Jamie Fraser, in Outlander (which was also published more than 16 years ago). Another unforgettable Alpha Male is Alexander Belov in The Bronze Horseman. A note of warning: if you choose either of these books, be sure to clear your calendar because you will want to continue with the remaining books in the series. :-)

Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon The Bronze Horseman (Tatiana and Alexander, #1) by Paullina Simons

4. The lights are on, but nobody's home: Go to your GR recommendations and find a book that you think your pickee would enjoy but that you've never heard about before. Surrender looks really good!

Surrender (MacKinnon’s Rangers, #1) by Pamela Clare

5. Elite 8:It Had to Be You is a well-written romance about a woman who inherits ownership of a football team. A very popular book that I found hard to put down is The Pillars of the Earth.

It Had to Be You (Chicago Stars, #1) by Susan Elizabeth Phillips The Pillars of the Earth (The Pillars of the Earth, #1) by Ken Follett

6. Nutty as a fruitcake: I didn't notice a lot of PNR or Urban Fantasy on your Read shelf.
I highly recommend J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series, starting with Dark Lover. You may also enjoy the vamp-hunting exploits of Cat and Bones starting withHalfway to the Grave. In the mood for horror? Try Stephen King's classic Carrie

Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1) by J.R. Ward Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, #1) by Jeaniene Frost Carrie by Stephen King

7. Final 4: Since you enjoyed The Hunger Games, see what happens next in Catching Fire. Another post-apocalyptic book that is well-written and keep-the-lights-on creepy is The Passage. Your most-read author is Sophie Kinsella, so you would probably enjoy
Mini Shopaholic: A Novel.

Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins The Passage (The Passage #1) by Justin Cronin Mini Shopaholic A Novel by Sophie Kinsella

8. Neither rhyme nor reason: Your random book choice is Anna Dressed in Blood.

Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1) by Kendare Blake

9. Buddy Read...Chicken or Egg
Your TBR and mine are well-matched! I would be happy to read any of these with you:

Revolution, Brooklyn or Firefly Lane

Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah

I hope you have a great month of reading!

~Megan~ (megadee) Picks for Dee!
Hope I found something you might like!

1. Mad as a March hare:
Out Of Her League by Kaylea Cross - Set in Canada, and the start to one of my favorite suspense series of all time!

2. Non Compos Mentis:
Tempting Danger by Eileen Wilks - This one deals with magic and the law, and is one of the most underrated UF series out there, in my opinion.

3. (Not So) Sweet 16:
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen - You've enjoyed Austen before! I did this one for a PIFM last year and adored it.

4. The lights are on, but nobody's home:
Cast in Shadow by Michelle Sagara West - This was in my recommendations and looks pretty cool.

5. Elite 8:
See Jane Score by Rachel Gibson - One of my fave sports-themed romances. Luc "Lucky" Martineau will make you drool! I see you like audiobooks, and this one is great in that format.

6. Nutty as a fruitcake:
Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella - You seem to read every genre, so I picked my favorite light/funny read. This book made me laugh out loud several times!

7. Final 4:
Beyond the Night by Joss Ware - Post-apocalyptic, romantic goodness....and zombies!

8. Neither rhyme nor reason:
Skinwalker by Faith Hunter

9. Buddy Read...Chicken or Egg?
It seems you and I are both big on series, so a standalone was not easy to come by. I would be happy to buddy read either:
The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran
And One Last Thing ... by Molly Harper

Out Of Her League (Suspense Series, #1) by Kaylea Cross Tempting Danger (World of the Lupi, #1) by Eileen Wilks Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen Cast in Shadow (Chronicles of Elantra, #1) by Michelle Sagara West See Jane Score (Chinooks Hockey Team, #2) by Rachel Gibson Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella Beyond the Night (Envy Chronicles, #1) by Joss Ware Skinwalker (Jane Yellowrock, #1) by Faith Hunter The Duke of Shadows by Meredith Duran And One Last Thing ... by Molly Harper

message 217: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments Suzanne - cracks fingers...here you go...hopefully somethign in this list works for you ;)

1. Mad as March Hare
Bobbie Faye's Very (very, very, very) Bad Day - just the amount of very's in the title made it funky to me ;)
Bridge of Scarlet Leaves - a very non-traditional romance featuring the internment camps of the Japanese during WW2 - Kristina is going to be joining us for ask an author this month if you like it ;)

2. Non Compos Mentis
Law - Everywhere That Mary Went (the first in Lisa Scottaline's Rosaro and Assoc. series) or Just the Sexiest Man Alive
Religion - In the Bleak Midwinter - the first in the Rev. Claire Ferguson series
Magic - Visions of Magic

3. (Not So) Sweet 16
Déjà Dead - the first in Kathy Reichs Temperence Brennan series - bonus the character is over 40 and its been out for over 16 years
Home Again - Kristin Hannah is always a go-to read for me, this is one of her earlier books
The Gamble or Years - LaVyrle Spencer was my first intro to romance and I still love her to this day and these are 2 of my favorites
Men Out of Uniform: Three Novellas of Erotic Surrender - nothing like military men for a bit of Alpha ;)

4. The Lights Are On, But Nobody's Home
Domestic Violets - this one just sounded intriguing and i'm not sure if you will like it or not, but hey what they heck ;)
Forged in Fire - the cover def. attracted me and it sounds interesting as did this cover A Bed of Thorns and Roses

5. Elite 8
Body Check; Simply Irresistible or Double Play for some new sports series ;)
The Other Life - this is one of the popular books on GR's read now, as is this one, No One Is Here Except All of Us

6. Nutty as a fruitcake
Sacrifice - this came as a recommendation off my Nordic Noir shelf and seems a bit different from what you normally read
Endeavor in Time as a bit of a dystopia/futuristic kind of read
The Curtis Reincarnation - we are doing this as a buddy read for the m/m read here this month, if you want to join us

7. Final 4
there is a bit of everything here, from your favorite authors The Wolf Gift (anne rice) or Black Hills (Nora)
Timeless or Fury of Fire as a book published in a leap year
Angelfall or Partials for post-apocalyptic

8. Neither Rhyme Nor Reason
since you have SOOO many books on your TBR, I used a tried and true method of random.org...plugged in the number of books on your shelf and randomly selected 3 books and they were:
Revolutionary Road (#6366 on your shelf)
Everybody Sees the Ants (#8352)
Waiting for Mr. Darcy (#5255)

9. Buddy Read...Chicken or Egg
I don't know if I will have time to do a buddy read this month, but here are a few first in series that we share in common:
Dead Iron - I like her Allie Beckstrom book that i've read, so this could be an interesting one to try ;)
Show No Mercy or
since we have 1.5 listed on our shelves (Photographs & Phantoms), why not try book 1 - Steam & Sorcery

Wow, great picks Amy J!

Buddy read: Yes, yes, yes!! I bouught Zero at the Bone (Zero at the Bone, #1) by Jane Seville last year and have been wanting to read it. I probably cant start it until next week or two, but I'm in if you are.

I *cracked up*(pun intended) with the rec for
The Egg Said Nothing by Caris O'Malley . I normally read just romance, but after reading the funny sample I bought it so will read it too.

I'm still deciding between:
Skin Game (Skin, #1) by Ava Gray , Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie , and Kiss Me, I'm Irish by Roxanne St. Claire too. All are one's I really want to read soon.

Thanks so much Amy!

3. (Not So) Sweet 16: Outlander by Diana Gabaldon Jamie in the book is a real alpha male.

5. Elite 8: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins you have to read this, I loved this book and I think you would really enjoy it or One Day by David Nicholls this one I did ponder whether to suggest but I loved it and thought I'd let you decide.

6. Nutty as a fruitcake: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See I decided to go with historical fiction for this one. I gave this book 5 stars I found it a really fascinating read or Witch Child by Celia Reesit is historical but it is also paranormal so this one might appeal to you.

8. Neither rhyme nor reason: Abandon by Meg Cabot This just stuck out to me.

message 235: by Penney (new)

Penney (pschoener) | 3553 comments Ok Rishika! It took me a while, but I finally came up with some choices for you. I was a little confused by your shelves and couldn't quite tell what you've read and not read so If I've chosen books you've already read, I'll be happy to repick for you. I have lots in mind :)

1. Mad As a March Hare: These books are very different, but both have original premises... Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Soulless.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor Soulless (Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger

2. Non Compos Mentis: I decided to stick with a magic theme here but, once again, these are two very different books... The Night Circus is YA fantasy with a bit of mystery and Magic Bites is UF with a kick-ass sarcastic heroine and lots of humor.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews

3. (Not So) Sweet 16: You seemed to like another Susan Elizabeth Phillips book so I thought you'd really enjoy It Had to Be You published in '94. My other choice is probably out of your comfort zone (not to mention large), but it's one of my favorite books and I try to recommend it as often as possible, Outlander published in '91.
It Had to Be You (Chicago Stars, #1) by Susan Elizabeth Phillips Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon

4. The Lights Are On, But Nobody's Home: You seem to really enjoy YA so using my GR recommendations I came up with two I thought you'd like... I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You and The Naming
I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You (Gallagher Girls, #1) by Ally Carter The Naming (The Books of Pellinor, #1) by Alison Croggon

5. Elite 8: Ok, I have one sports themed book and one popular best seller... Flat-Out Sexy focuses on the world of stock car racing, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is just a classic :)
Flat-Out Sexy (Fast Track, #1) by Erin McCarthy The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Hitchhiker's Guide, #1) by Douglas Adams

6. Nutty As A Fruitcake: Fifty Shades of Grey is probably not a book you would normally choose for yourself, but it was my favorite read of 2011. Some classify it as erotic romance, but for me it kind of hovers on the edge. A really funny read you might like is The Spellman Files.
Fifty Shades of Grey (Fifty Shades, #1) by E.L. James The Spellman Files (The Spellmans, #1) by Lisa Lutz

7. Final 4: There was only one author who was repeated on your shelves and that was Terry Pratchett. I've heard very good things about Nation, you might want to check it out. I didn't see The Hunger Games on your lists and I'd be really surprised if you haven't read it yet. In case, you haven't... here ya go!
Nation by Terry Pratchett The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) by Suzanne Collins

8. Neither Rhyme Nor Reason: The very first book I saw on your TBR caught my fancy was Bossypants by Tina Fey, I'm dying to read it.
Bossypants by Tina Fey

9. Buddy Read... Team Chicken: Actually the person who picked for me this month, also recommended Beauty: A Retelling of Beauty & the Beast. I thought you'd enjoy it too. I don't know if I have time to join you this month, but I'll try :)
Beauty A Retelling of Beauty & the Beast by Robin McKinley

I hope you find something on this list you'll like. If there are books you've already read just let me know and I'll replace it :)
Happy Reading!

Elke (ejurca) | 1810 comments Here you go Heather! Sorry I am doing this a little late...but work gets in the way! lol! Hope you like the picks, if not let me know and I will try again! Happy Reading!!

1.Mad as a March hare:Fury by Anya Bast. Its about shapeshifters...but I have never read one about a cougar (the animal-not the older hot woman lol!) and a wolf!

2.Non Compos Mentis: Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews. This one looks good!

3.(Not so)Sweet 15: Alexandra's Legacy by N.J. Walters. this one has a yummy Alpha male and I believe is over 40.

4.The lights are on, but nobody is home: Midnight's Daughter by Karen Chance. This was proving to be difficult, because you have a lot of PR in your TBR!

5.Elite 8: The Perfect Play by Jaci Burton or The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Both will be on my TBR!

6.Nutty as a fruitcake: Intentions of the Earl by Rose Gordon. I don't see a lot of HR in your shelves. Or for a light and funny read One for the Money by Janet Evanovich.

7.Final 4:Nice Girls Don't Bite Their Neighbors by Molly Harper. I see you have read a lot by her!

8. Neither rhyme nor reason: Blood of the Wicked by Karina Cooper. This one looks really good! On my TBR now!

9.Buddy Read: Some Girls Bite by Chloe Neill. Let me know if you want to do the buddy read!

Thanks, Penney! That's one of the reasons I didn't back out of running the challenge even though I was so busy. I felt I had too good an idea, LOL!

Well, I wanted to read it, but my library does not have it nor do the book stores. It must be out of print or something. Bummer!

I've never heard of the genre Steampunk before!

message 244: by Melissa ** (new)

Melissa ** | 544 comments OK Debbie! I think I have picked some good ones, but if you don't like anything I can always try again.

1. Mad as a March Hare:
A Quick Bite - this book is set in Canada and one of my favorite series.

2. Non Compos Mentis:
Dead Witch Walking - this is about magic and on your TBR and another one of my favorites
Practice Makes Perfect - This is about law. It is funny and an easy read.

3. (Not So) Sweet 16:
Anyone But You - this was hard for me because I don't read many books with characters older then 30's. But I found one and it is a good one too.

4. The Lights are on but Nobody's Home:
Halo
Touch the Dark

5. Elite 8:
Simply Irresistible and It Had to Be You two great books.

6. Nutty as a Fruitcake:
Crazy Hot
The Passage - This book was very different from what I use to, but out of all the picks I think this one is the one you shuld pick.

7. Final 4:
Divergent - this reminds me of The Hunger Games.
The Girl Who Played With Fire - I haven't read any of these but I notice you read the first on and liked it.

8. Neither Rhyme Nor Reason:
Vampire Academy
Playing the Game

9. Buddy Read
The Lucky One - I want to go and see this movie but would like to read the book first if you are interested.

Cathy Galloway | 700 comments Skandia, thanks for the great recs! I am going to put in a request to the library for See Jane Score and A Girl's Guide to Vampires. I have already requested The Garden Intrigue but who knows how long that will take!

D.G. | 4477 comments Miss

You have always given me such great recs that I was a little nervous picking for you. I hope you find something below you like. You

1. Mad as a March hare
Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Díaz.
Both books have definitely a funky premise. The first one is a sheep detective story (yes, sheep investigating a murder!) and the second one is Latin historical fiction mixed with sci-fi undertones.

2. Non Compos Mentis
The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima (magic) - Another book I've been meaning to read!
Monkeewrench by P.J. Tracy (police officers as main characters) - This is one of my favorite contemporary mystery series. The characters are just sooo good and human.

3. (Not So) Sweet 16
Conor's Way by Laura Lee Guhrke (pub. 1996) - This book was published a while back but it's really terrific, with one of the longest suffering heroes I've ever read about.
Mine to Possess by Nalini Singh (alpha male) - This is not my favorite but it opens up the overall story arc that it's still driving the series so I think it's an important read. Hopefully the heroine doesn't annoy you too much. :)
Drums Of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon (over 40) - Jamie, Jamie...he's still as awesome in his late 40s as he was in his 20s.

4. The lights are on, but nobody's home
The Darkness That Comes Before by R. Scott Bakker (fantasy)
The Space Between by Brenna Yovanoff (YA)
Never heard of either but they both look good...I'm adding them to my TBR right away!

5. Elite 8
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (popular book) - I see you like Classics so I thought you may want to try this out. I've been meaning to read it for a long time.
Squeeze Play by Kate Angell (sports) - Several of my friends have rated this series highly so I've been meaning to try it out.

6. Nutty as a fruitcake
A Prisoner of Birth by Jeffrey Archer (thriller) - This is a modern version, thriller style of The Count of Monte Cristo (which I saw you liked.) It's really good!
Beyond Heaving Bosoms: The Smart Bitches' Guide to Romance Novels by Sarah Wendell (funny) - I see you don't read much non fiction but this is really funny and anybody that reads romance can totally relate!

7. Final 4
Angelfall by Susan Ee (post-apocalyptic) - I loooved this book...among my favorites of the year.
A Perfect Blood by Kim Harrison (latest by favorite author) - I'm sure you've been looking forward to this one!

8. Neither rhyme nor reason:
The Novice by Trudi Canavan
Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

9. Buddy Read: Egg! 1st in Series
The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner
My Soul to Take by Rachel Vincent
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
Delirium by Lauren Oliver
I haven't read the first two and would like to but I'm not sure I can join in the buddy read. Let me know if you're interested though and I'll see if I can find the time. The last two (Daughter & Delirium) are books I already read but they are among my favorite books of the last 6 months. If we cannot do a buddy read, at least I can chat about these with you!
