somehow I ended up with 12 books to read over the holidays. That's more than half the number of books I've read so far this year.

Well all have to have our passions. My wife is a OOAK BJD Dollmaker, which takes up most of her time, but she has always had a passion for books. So she really understands why I can't always control my urges to buy more. Hey, most of the time she actually helps me :)

Bette, yes they are all still upright, but we don't try to rustle them too much. Testing the integrity of the structure I find that very, very little force will cause a complete collapse. Like a house of cards. But, so far so good :)

Hey Carolyn
What did your husband say? :)
Yes, We will be moving house in the near future so I plan on devising a much more impressive display once settled with more room.
One day I plan to have a very large room dedicated as a library with all 4 walls covered in books from floor to ceiling, and those ladders running along the length of the walls for exploring :)

WOW! Nice work Liam.
I'm only at about 490. Got some catch up to do :)

Where do you all usually find recommendations from to add to you TBR list?Me, I find I get most of mine from book reviews from friends here on Goodreads, or scouting the internet for good book review sites. Also a get a lot of good books from the 'Books on the Nightstand' podcast.

Goodreads is quite enough for me Shane;)

I have 650 on my TBR, but every few days I prune it. My reading habits/genres have changed in 2 years so I am trying, slowly, to get it down to something more "realistic"

Dumb question but you do access the Recommendation option on your home page in Goodreads, don't you?
I scout the NY Times recommendations, newspaper reviews, I pester people at book shops, GR friends and people whose reviews I follow. If you luck upon a GR person who reads a lot of books you tend to like, you have a good source there. I also scout the GR 'most followed' people and pick someone with similar tastes from there.
I
could
count my TBR, but that would waste valuable reading time...... and I don't need to look at the Recommendation option. My TBR is not helped by GR, only added to! And it's already huge.
Just culled my GR TBR list from 282 to 167 :-)
Liam wrote: "Remove TBR books from your list, Marianne. Cut down the number."Not in my vocabulary, Liam!!!
Hubby wishes it was though
(yes, I did know what it meant...)
I can't cull. All the books in my 'want to read' list on goodreads are on my physical TBR pile or on my eReaders. Only about 4 or 5 are wish list ones. I guess I could delete them but the physical books will still be glowering at me

Mine is has-its-own-bookcase big. So big I can't even be bothered adding them all to Goodreads. It is my life goal to have that bookcase empty.

Hi Shane, my hubby laughed and threatened divorce if my tbr ever gets that big! I know he doesn't mean it :)
He does try to keep my 'habit' under control by insisting on an annual cull of read books and by disallowing the purchase of bigger bookshelves, but really he's kidding himself if he thinks it's working!
The library room you describe sounds like a wonderful dream - I hope it happens for you! (It'll only happen for me if I do get divorced! :)
Brenda wrote: "I know:( My problem is that I own the majority of them, so I can never get rid of many!"But you do read very fast - if you didn't add any new books and kept reading, you'd probably be down to 790 by the weekend - and maybe 780 the weekend after! ;-)
Brenda wrote: "You're right..I just have to stop acquiring new books;) As if that will happen! Lol":-D
1200 or something ridiculous. I need to cull it and I will one day I can knuckle down and do it. Any culling suggestions???!!
Get rid of every book that you don't own!!! Harsh, but it works...all I have on mine is owned books plus a few wish list ones:) (Even then it's over 800!!)
Do you own them all tho?I culled last week on here because I saw books I put in here tbr when I first joined in 2010...i scrapped most...i thought well it's been 4 nearly 5 years n I still don't own them n there is probably a chance what I've got on my more current list is up to date on my likes moreso.
Mmmmm good thinking Brenda. Let's see what I do with this info ;)Though I think a lot of my second hand purchases are willy nilly so they're not that fantastic, and the really good ones are the ones I come across here.. (That I don't own)
Laura wrote: "Oh sorry Brenda that question wasn't for you..we posted at the same time!"

This makes complete sense.. You've both given me food for thought. If I really want to read one I don't own, I can also add it to the library shelf if it's on their catalogue.
Thanks Laura and Brenda :) :)

Control... What is this word you speak of? ;)Mine's under 1400 at the moment. Yay! And yes, I own probably more than 70% of them... I love my kindle!
I have some 700 on my list and periodically go thru, re-checking books added first, reading blurbs and deciding quite often that I actually don't feel too fussed about certain books. I flick them. I do like to keep my list under 500.I've also started ordering TBR books from library to read instead of adding any more.
Laura wrote: "Wow even owning 70% of that 1.4k is impressive :O!!"It is quite easy when you raid the freebies on kindle Laura :) It's also a bit of an addiction. hehe
I always buy my books- majority of them are bargain ones, though. I don't like borrowing them from the library because sometimes it might take me more than two weeks to read something if life gets in the way. I also don't like the attitudes of a lot of the librarians I have met. And besides, the only things I spend money on these days are books, music and things for my pets. :)
