How large is your TBR list? Does it have a mind of its own?

I very quickly worked that one out Brenda. I only requested 12, I got 7, I've read 5 of those already so I'm not doing too badly, but it would be very easy to go overboard!I think Net Galley will only be for special books, too many others I have to read already

I've had little culls recently, but with a TBR list that has just crept over 300, I still want tor ead almost all of the books on it... Maybe I need a bigger list so I can have a bigger cull? Or is that perhaps missing the point?!
And yes, it would be easier to make some headway on decreasing my list if I could stop adding to the list, because I'm almost always reading books from my TBR...

I agree, pre-publication of our favourite authors classes as special;)

I try to ONLY read from my TBR and also from my own books, but sometimes I just have to borrow from the library or buy;)

512 now :)

Stripped mine back to 480. I'm aiming for 400 by the end of today.

Done! Now to aim for 300, then 250... I'll aim to keep it at 250 or below for now, to narrow down books I actually want to read.

I dare you, Lynxie, to pare yours back to 1000! *g*
EDIT: I can't get mine past 368! Maybe I just won't add any more for a couple of years...

So not happening Tanvi... I would probably pull out my hair or poke out my eyes before that happened.368 is still a great effort :D
Good on you Tanvi. I probably need to do a good clean out of my TBR list too. Mine is sitting at:Wishlist : 281
Wishlist Audio books : 6
TBR on Shelf : 100
TBR on ebooks : 15
I can't reduce the shelf and ebooks until I read them but wouldn't mind getting the wishlist down to about 200
*Shamefacedly pokes head up*TBR: 2863
Wishlist: 437
Kindle: 625
So I actually own most of my tbr and no culling will be taking place, except if I ever get around to getting rid of some of the kindle freebies. But I gotta say the majority of mine are paperbacks or ebooks.
I got inspired by this thread and just culled around 30 books from my TBR. I'm pretty proud of this effort as it brings my TBR down to around 450-ish.This is still quite a large number but kind of achievable at least.
That's until I start adding to it again anyway :-)
Well, it's back up to 394, though if I keep adding books to my 'abandoned' shelf at this rate (eight already this year) it'll be 300 before July.
Of the books I own and haven't read, mine stands at 118. This year I've had to limit myself to buying one book every two that I read, otherwise I'll just never get on top of it all. I have a glass jug that I've filled with little bits of paper with the name of a book on each, so every time I go to pick a new book to read, it's like a little event in itself. It gets me all razzed to read.

That's a nifty idea Eliza! What if you don't feel like that sort of book that comes out though? Do you pick another, or just read it?

I love all my books and do want to read them, my problem is that I only ever feel like reading the books that I just bought, but need to finish the ones that I'm reading first. But by the time I do that, I've bought a new book and just want to read that one. So the only time I put it back is if I just read one that was too similar to it. Like if I just read a really dense biography, and I pull out a really dense historical non-fiction, I'll put it back in lieu of a lighter read.

That sounds like a good idea. I sometimes just don't feel like reading a particular book I pick up - just the mood I'm in I guess. And I can pick it up later and really enjoy it:)

My tbr list is huge 'cos I'm interested in everything. Problem is I buy books and borrow from the library and I'm in a book group. Means the purchases don't get read straightaway so my pile of tbr physical books I own is huge in itself.

Okay, that is a bit dramatic but there are so many good books out there that I just have to commit to reading at some point before William becomes King. But that life's problems were all as simple!
Well so much for not adding this year I think I've already added over 20 and January hasn't ended yet. So my list is now at 590 :(
Brenda wrote: "Mine has snuck back up again...it's standing at 799 now!!"I feel better now ;) Good luck getting through all those Brenda, although it shouldn't take you too long ;)

I have decided to start fresh... deleted all books on my TBR list and have started making a list for 2014. This year I have decided to exclusively read literary fiction by female authors.

I agree - Brenda reading 799 would take less time than me reading 310 (my current TBR list)!!
My trouble is they keep going on - I haven't even been here and it's now 800! My library bookclub read for February added one more O_o!!
575. It seems to be growing exponentially with the advent of Goodreads having those scrolling recommendations on the side bar.
My TBR list here on Goodreads didn't fully represent all the books I had stashed. I have just been through the spare room shelves and have hauled 3 boxes of perfectly good books, that in reality I am never going to read, off to the library. Some of the books I couldn't even remember buying and wondered what possessed me. I am feeling quite proud of myself. I still have 195 books left - that includes my e-books - so it's not as though I am going to run out anytime soon :)
Brenda wrote: "Well done Sally! Lots of people will thank you:)"Including my husband :) you can actually SEE the shelves now lol
More importantly there is room for more books {VBG}

My Goodreads list is somewhere around 800, I have tons of books at my library to read, and even more that I own and haven't yet read.So many books, not enough time.
Especially now that my classes have started up again...
I've had a clean-up of my tbr; now down to 517 from well over 600.I see some people, not AR, with over 4000 on their tbr. Now that is out of control! How could you ever hope to make inroads into that?
I must have perfect control or something because there are 46 books on my TBR list. It usually hovers at just under 50. Any more than that and I forget why I wanted to read them in the first place and just delete them!
Phrynne wrote: "I must have perfect control or something because there are 46 books on my TBR list. It usually hovers at just under 50. At the moment my list is about 310ish and it's been about that for the whole 6 weeks of this year, I think, but I don't hold out much hope it will be that (or less) come the end of the year!!
Kathryn wrote: "Phrynne wrote: "I must have perfect control or something because there are 46 books on my TBR list. It usually hovers at just under 50. Any more than that and I forget why I wanted to read them in ..."
Yes I do look them up and still sometimes wonder why I added them! Somehow their importance to me just wanes over time which matters not at all because there are all those other books out there just crying out to be read!

(Yeah, right!)

Haha good on Lynxie, I'd like to think I'm going to all of mine as well. Yes adding is the big problem :)
