Self Challenge: Waste not, Want not - 2012
In my defence a few of these are my Aunts books....And I got a lot from my Birthday/Christmas gift cards in the last month >
Wow, awesome! I won't join in as I have way too many books I couldn't read them all in one year even if that's all I did... Will think of a challenge of my own and put it on when I am ready :)
Having it all spread out like this Lorraine makes one feel rather guilty about spending hahaha!I look forward to your challenge. Mine is a lot of books but you can do one with very little if you like xD!
This book here is making me especially guilty as I can't even remember why I bought it and it was nearly £4 so not exactly a 'cheap buy'
Their Eyes Were Watching God
Hope you get through them all Louise, I couldn't do this challenge with you as like Lorraine I have too many for me to be able to read them in one year.I will try to think of a challenge for me & let you know.
Thank You Anita! Hopefully a few more people will think of challenges soon enough! I know it can be hard but heh, it's meant to be fun so no rush :D
I think my challenge will have to be scrapbooking related - to use the papers and stuff I have before rushing out to buy more! Mind you, I was quite good and used up a lot of the Christmas papers I already had. And it is more fun making your own embellishments rather than just buying.
I think this should be my challenge, I have so many books ive bought on my kindle and are left unread :(

As for reading - I read a lot & quite a varied selection, so apart from the Goodreads challenge I'm not sure what I could challenge myself to do.
Jay-me (Janet) wrote: "Karen wrote: "I think my challenge will have to be scrapbooking related - to use the papers and stuff I have before rushing out to buy more! Mind you, I was quite good and used up a lot of the Chri..."How about something to do with a resolution?
And Anna - it's awful how much money I've spent and not used. Cringing even thinking about it!!
And Karen, I used to craft a lot but lost interest but kept the stuff - gave it away at the start of the year. Felt so much better!
I've read all the books I've paid for but I have so many free books still waiting to be read. Think I have just come up with a challenge for myself though...
'Waste not, want not', were words heard every day as I was growing up and they sunk in and had the desired effect. Not sure how true it is - I never (or rarely) wasted and often wanted, but seem to have reached a point now where less feels more comfortable than more. I do have a few unread books though...
I was considering not downloading any books till I finish reading all the TBR already in my Kindle.(200+).On reflection however this may be 'shooting myself in the foot' as it would mean ignoring recommendations, missing out on freebies and not taking part in any group reads for perhaps 2 years.
More thought required methinks!
You could just download all the freebies to your computer so you still technically have them - and I thought about that when I was typing this up. For me, if something does come up that I definitely want to read, I will read it - I don't want to make myself miserable for the sake of a challengeAnd Nell - My parents are completely middle class therefore I never had to want for anything in my life - hence the habit of attempting not to waste something is hard to drill in to my young brain!!
Louise, my children are the same - it's just us post-war baby boomers who were trained to be careful!
Just HAD to buy this book in the sale.
It's the first thing that has caught my attention in the whole sale so I was a happy duck today! (And I had a few quid left on a gift card!)
LOL Well I am reading a bought book at the minute and this is a *history* book so I can convince myself it is purely studying.. y'know... really...
Bought another one in the sale but in my defence could of been a lot worse. There was barely any fantasy books in it :(
I know, it could of been very very very bad for my bank account - I was still annoyed though. Last year I was able to try quite a few new series' but this year, nope.
On the bright side it will give you more time to get on with your challenge! Or less books to add to it...
I love fantasy too Elle. I'm really looking forward to our Mhairi finally publishing her book. I believe there will be harpies!Harpies rock.
Sounds like a great challenge but like many I already have too many books to read in one year. Many of them were freebies but I also succumbed to the sale and bought rather more than I had intended.Best I stop writing and get reading on this chilly Saturday afternoon!
Harpies Patti! I haven't read a good harpies book since the windsingers which was an awful lot of years ago, I can't wait for Mhairis new book now(does jig of excitement)
If you like light, sort of silly fantasy with lots of magic and harpies and quite a lot of puns have a look at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Spell-Chamele...
Lots of books in the series. You could read one or two of them while we wait for Mhairi's book to be published.
Have read them Patti but thank you, I think it was back in the eighties or early nineties when they came out. Nice lighhearted reads if I remember correctly.Thank you though.
Oops. Hehe. They're great, aren't they Anita? I've not read any of the newer ones. I've got them in paperback as I bought them just before I got my kindle.
I really should read the stack of paperbacks I have...
i need a similar thing - I keep saying 'cant' download any books until I get to No x' on the kindle, but then a really good book comes up on the Freebies list!! I was doing really well this week and thought I had got over clickitis, but not done very well the past two days and have picked up about a dozen freebies - one consolation with free kindle books is that most of them are short stories, so not long to read. My main aim though is to read all the Cross novels I have on the kindle, and then see how many are left - I have three in paperback form though, so will try reading those in that format, and then there are only about 15 paperbacks in my house I haven't read, I have started one and put it back down more than once though, so not sure that will ever get read. 7 are non-fiction and not 'book' books, lots of pictures. Will set a goal to read part of those every day, when I sit with the foster cat.
There are 2 that i really don't want to read - they were presents and so not my type of book! At least now with my Kindle i don't need that 4th bookcase! I have downloaded another 7 books today!
WOOP!One book I was pretty sure I would never finish down. Which actually turned out to be a book I never wanted to end.
Next read:
There were actually 17 but have read one and am on my second so doing well - the interesting thing will be when i get to the fiction books, might not be able to switch between books then!
This is like my own little personal diary. Ha.Anyway. I bought another book because I couldn't wait for it to go free, and I'm totally just going to read it now. Because I'm not in the mood for The Book Thief!
I only got about... 5% in but I loved it so much I wanted to savour it and I need to be in the mood for that. I need a light book that I know I'll love in between. American Gods wore me out!
Fair enough. Reading mine on the way from school to work and from work to school or work to home, at this rate I'll hvae read it in 3 months time ! I'm glad I'm not getting fully into it though, I'd have to use tissues all the time. So beautifully sad :(
I knew from the moment I started it, I would blend with it as much as I did with Anne of Green Gables. Another series of books that I just needed to savour. The language is just so amazing that I needed to really feel it, but at the minute I just want to read something fun!
Father and I earlier had a good laugh attempting to pronounce A Goodreads Gallimaufrey! I was trying to explain to him what I read last night and failed.

I have a serious problem of buying books I think are awesome then ignoring them. This is a problem for my bank account especially when said books are pre-ordered and cost a fortune compared to the ones I'm reading!
In 2011, I turned my real life spending and the way I view possessions around completely. I went from suffering years of hoarding useless junk due to my OCD to being an accidental minimalist (my Mother reckons the therapy just made me too poor to afford anything new).
My goal for 2012 is to take the same attitude to my books and read all books that I have bought for the Kindle within the past year and a bit, and when I buy a new book - to read it straight away!
Feel free to join in, as I know plenty of people have an awful habit of buying and not reading too!
I'm giving myself no rules because I feel that reading should be enjoyed so if by chance I do come across a book I do not want to finish, I will just delete it from the read pile and not care!
