I was initially going to use this for 3.1 because Holly Cupala's name is on the cover and I was having a tough time with that task, but I had to change it to this task because, well, I just had to. This WILL be my gift to all of my kids teachers, coaches, and school libraries this Christmas. This book needs to be read not only by kids, but by anyone, ANYONE who spends a great deal of time with kids- all of the ones I mentioned above, as well as school counselors, school administrators, scout leaders, and especially parents. This would be a great gift to any of these people because it is so eye opening. It's easy to say, "Just ignore it.", but anyone who have ever been bullied, or even those who have been the bully, know that it isn't that easy. For the bullied, this book provides proof that they are not alone and that it DOES get better. For the bullies, this book shows how deep words can cut and how what one thing said in jest can change someone irrevocably. For adults this book shows that kids need us to be their advocates, that saying, "Ignore them and they'll stop" doesn't work.

I wasn't bullied much and I wasn't much of a bully, but I still had some moments I won't forget- everyone does. I think it's important that we all remember those.

Maree | 233 comments 1.3 Eona: The Last Dragoneye 637 pages (LGBT). LOVED this book, it might be the best YA adventure I've read since The Hunger Games. It definitely deserves its 4-star rating. So much happened and I didn't want to stop reading. The ending was a little abrupt and left me wanting more, but I was very satisfied with the story in general.

What did you think about A Great and Terrible Beauty? I loved it. It was the 1st book I had ever read by Libba Bray and I became a fan for life because of it. It is so beautifully written!

Cristen and I talked about it and because that section of the challenge was written specifically for human slavery (December 2nd is the International Day for Abolition of Slavery, while there is an animal cruelty month in April) we're going to say no. But good thinking!

Brandi (librandian) | 206 comments OK, then I will switch my category to
1.3 Read a book that's at least 4 star-rated on goodreads and with your post tell us if you think it deserves the rank.

Half Brother by Kenneth Oppel 375 pages

At first I wasn't that into the book, but as it went along, I fell in love with Zan. Oppel did a wonderful job building the relationship between Ben and Zan. I listened to the audiobook which really helped give Zan's language a life of its own. It definitely deserves a 4 star rating and I would read more about Ben and Zan if Oppel ever decided to write more about the duo.

I thought it was really good. I didn't love the Internet Girls series she wrote (although I still read all 3!) so I wasn't sure what to expect from Shine. It was a great story and my heart ached for the kids and how poverty affected them.
