The Gathering Storm - 400 pgs

Yes people this is a historical paranormal fiction book. Taking place in old school Russia. Interesting concept and I think it worked out well."

Were you reading an ARC? I just ordered this for my library this morning, and made a mental note to read it when it comes in, but I thought it wasn't published until January. I'm jealous. :-}

So you would recommend it when it is published? I was intrigued by the setting. We see so much historical fiction (of both the paranormal and regular normal kind) set in England or Western Europe, but very few in Eastern Europe if you don't count WWII historical fiction.

message 154: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (Reading is Better With Cupcakes) (imjustcupcake) | 191 comments I did read an ARC of it (perk of being a bookseller). I would recommend it. It was not the best in the world but it was still a really good read. I look forward to reading more from this author, and watching her grow as a writer.

I finished it last night, and I would say that I am sad that I did finish it. I enjoyed the world so much! I want the next one to come out. I also like that it wasn't episodic like so many of the series that are out now have been. It was more or less a story contained within itself with loose ends to lead to the next one.

Karis Jacobstein (yalitwit) | 419 comments I'm switching some things up. I'll try not be confusing, but just in case, I will post the link to my Google spreadsheet at the bottom...

I'm moving Dear Bully: Seventy Authors Tell Their Stories by Carrie Jones and Megan Kelley Hallfrom 5.4 to 2.3. (Carrie's birthday is 12/13) No point changes.

I'm moving Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins from 3.5a to 5.4 since I'm giving this book to my sister as a Christmas gift. She loved Anna and the French Kiss, but her library doesn't have Lola yet. No point changes.

Lucinda's Secret by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi was an extra book for 3.5, but will now be one of the two primary books, so I'm claiming +8 points.

Now for the new stuff...

1.3 (#4) Tricks by Ellen Hopkins
Pages- 627
Points- 2

This book absolutely deserves a 4+ star rating. Her books are phenomenal, and this is no exception. I will say that this was probably her most horrifying and difficult to read book for me, but VERY well done.

1.5 (#3) The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
Pages- 452
Points- 2

Phenomenal! A must read for all YA fans!

2.4 (#2) The Wrath of Mulgarath by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi
Pages- 160
Points- 2

Holly Black is amazing! She's one of my favorite authors. Obviously, she knows how to write faery, but she is capable of much more. White Cat and Red Glove are favorites too!

2.4 (#3) Soupy Saturdays with the Pain and the Great One by Judy Blume
Pages- 128
Points- 2

Um, who doesn't love Judy Blume? She gets childhood like few adults do. My only child hubby needs to read this so he understands that there is not something "wrong" with our kids for fighting with and teasing each other as much as they do...

2.5 (#4) Where Things Come Back by John Corey Whaley
Pages- 228
Points- 2

Ya'll need to read this if you like good Literary Fiction. Amazingly written!

3.1 (#3) How to Save a Life by Sara Zarr
Pages- 341
Points- 2

5.5b Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Pages- 336
Points- 10

6.5b Pretty Crooked by Elisa Ludwig
Pages- 368
Points- 10

Mary, Willa's friend who she starts stealing for, is Hispanic. This is a modern-day Robin Hood and it is very cute.

Ann | 88 comments 5.4 The Dark Is Risingby Susan Cooper pages 244 I am giving this to my niece for Christmas (along with the rest of the series) because she is an avid reader who loves all things fantasy. I loved this series when I was about her age, and I am excited to be able to share it with her. I think she is finally old enough for the darkness in this book (although I'm a little worried now that I've actually re-read it. I think she'll be okay, but sometimes I read her wrong.)

Would this book count as a classic?

3.3 Going Underground by Susan Vaught pages 336

What did you think of it? I've been hearing rave reviews from many people, but the excerpts I've seen have shown lots of pretend-illiterate writing and I'm not sure if that would drive me insane or not.

message 161: by Maree (new)

Maree | 233 comments I thought it was okay, personally, but it definitely had issues. The pretend-illiterate writing was definitely part of it, though the lack of quotations didn't bother me as much. The story was interesting, I guess. Here's my Review. I think I expected too much from it, though.

message 162: by Angela Sunshine (new)

Angela Sunshine (angelasunshine) Hmm, I listened to the audio version, so the written words themselves weren't an issue. I liked the overall story quite a bit, but I agree that it was flawed. I didn't feel a connection to the main characters the way I hoped I would. I do think that the narrator's voice has a definite influence on me though, and am pretty sure I would've "read" some characters differently (read=more likable).

I've been hearing good things about the Leviathan series for a while, and I was not disappointed. This was an action-packed bit of steam-punk that anyone can enjoy, which is why I think it would make a good gift. It's a nice blend of historical fiction with a sci-fi steam-punk alternate world, along with a lot of adventure.
