The Girl Is Murder by Kathryn Miller Haines 352 pages
Kathryn Miller Haines' birthday is December 2
Genre: Mystery
Total points: 129
Total pages: 3031

The first chapter and the last chapter take place at Christmas/New Year's, but the rest of the book does not. Let me know if that is not enough to count.
4.5 Steampunk!: An Anthology of Fantastically Rich and Strange Stories by various authors pages 422 pages genre: short stories
and Amelia Lost by Candace Fleming 128 pages genre: nonfiction
I'm switching out of the spot for 5.3 and putting Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride into that slot instead. Pages 352
I'll then use Graceling (previously reported) as 1.4. I absolutely agree that Graceling should be on the WT Top Novel list. This was a re-read for me, and I liked it even better the second time around. I enjoyed the book the first time around, but wasn't compelled the read the companion novel. This time it happened to be one of the few downloadable audiobooks available, so I figured I'd listen to it, and it was far more engaging than I'd remembered. I had to run out and grab the second book right away. I loved how Katsa was a strong female character both physically and emotionally (though she was still vulnerable in some ways.) I loved the world-building and the ideas of the Graces. I'd love to see a book written by someone who has a relatively useless Grace.

I'm a huge fan of J.K. Rowling and Harry Potter, and it was really cool to see this addition to the story knowing it was in the last book as well. Rowling is a great author who weaves a great tale and these tales were more from the strange wizarding world.

Maree, what did you think of Forbidden? I really liked it.

I enjoyed Maureen Johnson's Scarlett series, so I was pleasantly surprised when I heard she was writing a thriller with a Jack the Ripper story thread. So far she hasn't failed to make me laugh with her witty writing, and this latest book was no exception - although there were some holes in the plot. I'm definitely going to read more of her work.

Moving The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson to task 1.2 (no change in points)
I'm also taking a +5 Genre Bonus (Sports) for Love Story by Jennifer Echols because a lot of the book revolves around horse racing.
1.3 (#2) The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern- 2 points

This book deserves every star possible. It was beautifully written and the story was truly amazing.
1.3 (#3) Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw by Jeff Kinney

Points- 2
I guess I get why MG readers enjoy these, but they just do not do it for me. Greg Heffley is a total jerk and I hate it that my kids think his antics are funny. He may have beat Junie B. Jones out of the top spot as my least favorite children's book character for my kids to emulate. No, I do not think this book is 4-star worthy.

I have been a huge fan of Tamora Pierce for decades (and am somewhat sad to realize that I can legitimately add the s) I named my imaginary country after the author (although I mispronounced it Ta-MOR - ah). I love that she has strong female characters, and that each of those characters is allowed to be strong in a different way. I love her romantic leads (Nawat! George Cooper!) and the fact that she allowed Keladry not to have one. I have read all of her books multiple times...except for the Beka Cooper series. I read them and enjoy them, but not in the same way that I adore most of her other work. They feel too long to me, as if the editor should have come down harder and didn't. This one in particular rubbed me the wrong way in several places. Ah well, can't win them all, I guess.

This is the 2nd book I've read by Jonathan Maberry, the first being Rot & Ruin, and really liked both books. He manages to mix action, horror, suspense and a lesson in humanity into this zombie series. His characters are flawed and real, and I appreciate that nobody is made out to be perfect, not even the "heroes". I can't wait for the next book to come out!

I liked this book a lot, but I have a hard time with it being on the list. Given that each person in the group get only one addition, I can't believe someone would use this as it. While it was really good, I can't see it being on anyone's "Best YA book I've ever read" list. Just my humble opinion...

Cloaked is a great book to give someone as a gift. It's a nice mix of fairy tales, humor, action and romance. Flinn does a good job of keeping it "clean" without being boring. I'd say this book is middle school+ appropriate. I enjoyed it!

Hmm, in that case I remember seeing someone a few weeks back that put Twilight in as the Sports genre. I don't want to be a tattletale, but I suspect that this same rule would apply to that situation too. I noted it at the time because it seemed odd, but I figured I just didn't understand the genre rules.
