Oh my, had I seen your comment earlier I surely would have picked up The Hunger Games in the bookstore today... I was so close to taking it with me! But it'll definitely move up some on my mental to-buy list :)

I hope you enjoy The Pillars of the Earth! I found it quite lovely.

Anyway, I'm currently reading The Shadow of the Wind, which I find to be much better than I had expected thanks to my mother's earlier feedback...

Krish Gonzalez | 11 comments Randomly slotting in here, as I'm new! I just finished reading a Gone by Mo Hayder (she has certainly got back to her best after failing with Ritual and Skin) and am currently reading The Purple Hibiscus, which I am literally a few pages into and I can see it captivating me for the next few hours.

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Bex- You should read The Red Pyramid. It's by the same author as the Percy Jackson series, I've heard its really good.

message 2154: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
I second that. It is good, but different from the Percy series. Egyptian gods instead of the Olympians.

message 2155: by Bex (new)

Bex (min_deore) My sister has her hands on The Red Pyramid at the moment... I'm trying to busy myself with another book so I don't end up snatching it from her when she's not looking lol. Thanks for the recommendation though!

Pillars should keep me occupied for a few days. Perhaps she'll finish it by then...

All these mentions of the Hunger Games makes me want to read them again.

Pillars is one of my very favorite books. I you enjoy it don't forget about the sequel

Meg (aurawn) | 44 comments I just finished reading Bite Me, the third book in Christopher Moore's vampire series, and it was... oddly disappointing. I loved the first two but it took me a while to get into this one and I didn't love it. Oh well.

Now I'm off to The Postmistress while also reading Anna Karenina. Whee!

Steph | 9 comments I'm now reading Blink. It's really interesting, I find and I can;t wait to read his other books when I'm finished!

Let me know how you end up liking Purple Hibiscus! I saw it the other day and wondered about it.

Just finished 360 Degrees Longitude: One Family's Journey Around the World which was excellent and makes me want to go on a year long journey around the world!

I think I'm either going to read The Hunger Games or The Last Lecture

message 2161: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I'm reading A Wrinkle in Time. Apparently I'm the only person on Earth who hasnt read it.

Jamie, I am about half way through the book, its simply stunning. I'm not sure if you have read "The God Of Small Things'; buts it's a little smilar to that. Set in Nigeria it captures beautifully the transition from pagan, idol worshipping to monotheistic worship after the introduction of the Christian faiths by the missionaries. It does this through the eyes of a 15 year old girl born into a wealthy, christian family the patriarch of which is overbearing and strict. So far its wonderful. I'm just annoyed that I started it when I have my theory test in driving coming up Eeeek!!

Lori Walker I finished Water for Elephants early this morning. It was so wonderful! I'm leaving it for my grandma to read. I plan on starting Wait Till Next Year today and hopefully doing some more work on On the Road.

message 2168: by Jess (new)

Jess I'm about 100 pages into East of Eden, and I've also been working my way through Elizabeth Bard's Lunch in Paris: A Love Story, with Recipes, which is fantastic so far!

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Yay! I'm not the only one. lol. It's pretty good so far, I'm enjoying it. I tried to listen to the audio book because the author is the reader. But it was terrible! It sounded like she had tons of spit in her mouth. But I started reading it on my nook and its much better.
Except for one thing. The kids name. Charles Wallace is a terrible name!

message 2172: by Jules (new)

Jules (randomisedhabit) | 123 comments I just finished The Shadow of the Wind, which I quite enjoyed - unexpectedly so, since mysteries aren't usually my cup of tea.

I think I'll (have to) immerse myself in Becoming Jane Austen next - I need it for a big presentation I've got coming up in a month, but Jane Austen is also always a subject matter I love to read about, so this is definitely mixing duty and pleasure.

message 2173: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished The Book Thief. I really enjoyed it, even if it kicked me hard.

I'm going to work on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and some other books I grab from the public library. I'm going to visit family and I will probably have lots of reading time, especially on the road.

still trudging through Anna K. I really wish I had more time to read. Hopefully this afternoon will be slow and tomorrow I don't think I have anything going on. Maybe can push it and finish by then.

message 2175: by Tori (new)

Tori Bryan | 13 comments I finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time last night and just started The Hobbit this morning. I've got a lot that I should be doing though, so I don't know when I'm going to have time to read!

Aw! Lol every time someone says something bad about this book it makes me sad. It's been my favorite since I was little.

Just finished reading The Hunger Games! I LOVED IT!!!! It was definitely deserving of the hype!

I have no IDEA what to read next since I don't have the second book in that series yet!!

message 2179: by Taya (new)

Taya (tayawoy) I'm slowly getting through Her Fearful Symmetry. I've got a long list of other books I want to read this summer so I've got to read faster!

message 2180: by Laura (new)

Laura (thatlibrarianlady) I finished Mere Christianity and now I'm reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

message 2181: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm currently reading The Beautiful and the Damned and Wait Till Next Year, which is memoir about the bond baseball created between a girl and her dad.

message 2182: by Kimi (new)

How was The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner? I've been hearing alot about this book lately!

Read A Touch of Dead and started God Bless John Wayne last night.

message 2188: by Jess (new)

Jess Snickers, I'm about to post a couple of questions to get discussion going for East of Eden. Looking forward to seeing you there!

I just finished William Alexander's 52 Loaves: One Man's Relentless Pursuit of Truth, Meaning, and a Perfect Crust, which was awesome and funny. Still working on East of Eden, and I'm also going to start Leila Ahmed's A Border Passage: From Cairo to America--A Woman's Journey.

How was A Touch of Dead?

message 2190: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I read The Cement Garden this evening. It was pretty good. Kinda different. Slightly sick. I guess I can see why the characters had such a disconnect
with reality but I'm just not sure....

message 2191: by Silvia (new)

Silvia (silverware) | 436 comments I finished A Tree Grows in Brooklynand I really enjoyed it. I am not starting to read Slumdog Millionaire. I've always wanted to get around to watching the movie but I never did. I figure it's funner to read the book and then watch the movie anyways. So that is the current plan!

message 2192: by Alicia (new)

Alicia (amazingact21) I just finished The Grapes of Wrath; it was good, but it was no East of Eden. None of Steinbeck's writing has lived up to that novel, in my mind.
Now I'm on to The Secret Life of Bees.

alicia, have you read The Pearl? I agree that it can't compare to EoE, but that's my next favorite Steinbeck novel.

message 2194: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Jess, I bought a volume of Steinbeck's shorter novels, which includes The Pearl. I may have to pick it up soon. I'm so glad I found the volume of his short novels rather than buying each book individually.

message 2195: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Right now I'm reading On the Road. I will not pick up any other books until I finish On the Road. After several years of starting this book, I am going to finish. That is all.

Yeah, that's a great way to read more of his work! I wish I had that compilation. I know you liked EoE too. I'd also recommend Travels with Charley (his travel memoir of driving around America with his dog) and The Moon Is Down. The only book I've had a hard time getting into (and have not picked back up) is The Winter of Our Discontent.

message 2197: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Jess, This book has Tortilla Flat, The Moon is Down, The Red Pony, Of Mice and Men (which I hated in HS; funny story, I read the Sparknotes because I just couldn't do the novel, and the Sparknotes left out the ending; good thing someone told me before we took the test), Cannery Row and The Pearl. I definitely plan on buying more of his longer novels once I get through a few of these. I'm fearful of buying several novels by one person when I've only read one or two (or even none) of their other works.

message 2198: by Jess (new)

Jess Tortilla Flat is also really good! I also hated Of Mice and Men in high school, though I really should read it again now and give it another shot.

message 2199: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I think I had an embarrassingly huge chip on my shoulder about the books I was told to read in high school because I didn't read most of them and I even told my teacher I didn't read them. Fortunately, I still have copies, so I can go back and read The Scarlet Letter, 1984, Brave New World, Of Mice and Men, etc. I am seriously glad that I read the summer reading books for my senior year (Catch-22, All Quiet on the Western Front, and The Things They Carried) because they were amazing.

message 2200: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen That's funny; I liked Of Mice and Men but HATED The Pearl.
