I finished Anna K Saturday. Started some fluff reading Sunday but ended up putting it down to actually do some housework (yard, cleaning, laundry)

I really liked Anna K, which shocked me. I posted in the thread for it. I will post some ideas for discussion a little later, probably today since I don't know if I will have the patience to wait a little longer.

Now reading Betrayed (House of Night #2) by PC Cast and Kristin Cast.

Sarah Elizabeth I really, really liked Of Mice and Men, even in high school. We also had to read the Red Pony and I didn't like it. lol It was too pathetically sad fro me. I couldn't bear it. It was so depressing. :'(

Of Mice and Men was one of the first books to actually make me cry.

I really like Anna K when we read it in high school as well. Although, I won't lie. Toward the mid-end, I skimmed a couple of chapters. I couldn't take it any more, I needed to know what happened exactly. I think I need to read it again one of these days... :)

The movie is great. I've heard from many of my friends that the movie is better than the book. I haven't read it so I wouldn't know. I'd love to hear your thoughts after you see it.

Ashley-- I loved the movie! I hope you enjoy it!!

message 2206: by Sonja (new)

Sonja (crvena_sonja) | 78 comments I finished The Witch of Portobello recently. I liked it much better than The Alchemist and it gives me hope that Paulo Coelho's other books will be bearable as well. I am currently reading The Elegance of the Hedgehog which I absolutely love. Both of the main characters are absolutely hilarious!

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments I have not been keeping up on my reading recently. I've been working, and when I'm not working I've just been too bored and apathetic to read. How lame is that, right? I'm on "vacation" right now visiting my family in Alaska, which would be fine, except that I miss my friends and my babe back in North Carolina. I've been here just over a month, and at this point I just want to go home. For some reason, being bored and sad makes me not want to read anything. I have no idea why.
Technically right now I am "reading" The Hobbit: or There and Back Again, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, The Remains of the Day, and A Wizard of Earthsea. At least, that's what I have checked out of the library. I guess we'll see if I ever finish them.

message 2208: by Shadazz (new)

Shadazz ABout fight club. I saw the movie, and just very recently got the book, and cannot separate them. I imagine Ed norton and Brad pitt when I'm reading.

I just finished, today, The Savage Detectives I love this book, specially the middle part of it.

Emily Sorry to hear that, hope you find a book that will interest you

From time to time I go through reading dry spells like that. I hope it gets better soon - there is really no remedy to it, since it's not the reading itself that bothers you but the circumstances :/ And to force it doesn't really help, is my experience...

I've only read 3 books by Steinbeck, but I liked them all. Cannery Row is one of my all time favorite books. I need to reread it so I can read the sequel. You guys are really making me want to read East of Eden now!

Denise, you really won't be disappointed if you do. If you'd like, I'd be willing to mail you my copy of EoE when I'm finished re-reading it (for free, since I'm trying to give away as many books as possible before I move to Ohio this summer). Let me know! It does have a little bit of highlighting (maybe 3-4 lines worth) in the beginning of the book, but other than that it is spotless.

I actually JUST took Cannery Row out of the library today. Can't wait to read it!

message 2212: by D (new)

D That would be fantastic! I'll PM you.

I hope you like Cannery Row. I think I liked it so much because it changed point of view. I always feel more connected to the characters that way.

message 2213: by Sonja (new)

Sonja (crvena_sonja) | 78 comments So I finished The Elegance of the Hedgehog today... it was quite excellent. I highly recommend it! Now I've started The Complete Persepolis which is interesting but I'm not sure how I really feel about it yet...

Sonja, I also loved The Elegance of the Hedgehog! It was unexpectedly delightful.

I haven't read Persepolis, but I saw the film and thought it was fantastic. I sometimes have problems reading graphic novels/comics because there are so many things to look at (and I feel practically dizzy by the different visuals!). But I hope you enjoy it. Thematically, it's just wonderful.

Finished Betrayed and now have started Atlas Shrugged. One of my good friends mentioned it was his favorite book ever, and it has been on my shelf almost that long. :) It really doesn't seem like something I normally would read, and since it seems so long, I may break my one book at a time rule.

message 2216: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 308 comments Finally finished The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie. I really liked the ending to this book, but the beginning was a little slow. I had to keep pushing myself to keep going, but I'm glad I did. I can't decide whether to read The Thirteenth Tale or Garden Spells next.

message 2217: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (samhanson) | 179 comments I picked up Scott Pilgrim, Vol. 1: Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life in Borders today and actually read about half of it in store, then went to the library so I could take it home. So far it's a great, fun read and seems like something I can pick up while tackling thicker books at the same time. Hopefully I can read the whole series before the movie comes out.

Kelly, I also had a hard time with the beginning of the book, but the second half was awesome. With the second Flavia de Luce mystery, I felt engaged right away, so I hope you'll think about picking that one up.

Like Sarah, I LOVED 'The Thirteenth Tale.' I hope you do too!

message 2220: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 308 comments I think it's settled then, The Thirteeth Tale it is lol. I'm glad I have you guys to tell me what to read, otherwise I'd never be able to make up my mind!

and Jess I'll definitely pick up the second one.

Let me know how you like The Thirteenth Tale. I've been wanting to read that (and The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie) for a while.

I thought Garden Spells was a nice summer read--you should definitely read it after The Thirteenth Tale. I plan on reading The Sugar Queen sometime this summer.

message 2223: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Elizabeth Kelly, I'm so glad that Jess and I were able to convince you. I hope it now lives up to your high expectations ;) lol

message 2224: by Laura (new)

Laura (thatlibrarianlady) I finished reading Lost Girls and Love Hotels, which was pretty good. I gave it three stars.

message 2225: by Sonja (new)

Sonja (crvena_sonja) | 78 comments I had to leave the copy of The Complete Persepolis that I was reading with my boyfriend in CA (I'm back in VA) so while I'm waiting to go to the library (probably tomorrow) I'm reading Bonk The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex. This book is alternately informative, mildly awkward, and hilarious. The chapter I'm currently reading is about erectile dysfunction and surgeries that are performed to correct it...

message 2226: by Silvia (new)

Silvia (silverware) | 436 comments I just finished Slumdog Millionaire. I was really excited to read the book. I haven't seen the movie but have heard it is quite good. I thought the book would be good. The story was interesting but I just did not develop that connection with the characters that really allowed me to empathize with them.

I just started Shanghai Girls. Seems good so far! Better than Slumdug Millionaire.

message 2227: by Katt (new)

Katt | 2 comments I just finished reading "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time." It was a spectacular read! I'm starting "Lovely Bones" now.

R (feste) Britt wrote: "I'm reading Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham. I love it, but it's soooo thick."

Haha. I've had Maugham on my reading list forever, but I'm always getting seduced away by shorter and quicker reads. I'm going to have to bump it nearer to the top of my list, if you're liking it.

I'm currently reading Labyrinths by Jorge Luis Borges and definitely liking it.

message 2232: by Angie (new)

Angie (pepper_mint) Just finished "A Child Called It" and "The Lost Boy" by David Pelzer. Currently reading "Crescent", "Impaired: A Nurse's story of addiction and recovery", and "The Boleyn Inheritance"

Shann (shannoliver) His Dark Materials!!! AMAAAAAZING! =P

message 2234: by Silvia (new)

Silvia (silverware) | 436 comments Lauren. I am loving Shanghai Girls! This is the first novel I read by Lisa See, but now I know I want to read more!

And Shannon I was obsessed with His Dark Materials. All three books are amazing.

message 2235: by Kelly A. (new)

Kelly A. | 499 comments I am going back to school tomorrow for the summer term, and as soon as I get back to my apartment, I'm going to start The Historian. I've been hearing such good things about it for a really long time! Even if it is about vampires (I think).

Brittany Welna | 8 comments Natanya wrote: "I'm reading Extremely Loud Incredibly Close, and loving it so far. Really interesting."

That is possibly my favorite book ever. I hope you love it.

I just finished Thunderstruck by Erik Larson. He also wrote The Devil in the White City which is great.
Now I'm reading The Lives of John Lennon by Albert Goldman.
I guess I'm on a history non-fiction kick?

message 2237: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 686 comments It's been so long since I posted here, but I've finished A Game of Thrones this afternoon. It was soooo AMAZING! I would seriously recommend it to anyone who enjoys epic fantasy. I'm looking forward the reading the sequel.

I've just started Queen Victoria: Demon Hunter and expect to really like it, so I hope I won't be disappointed.

message 2238: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I finished On the Road this evening. I'll be reading Mrs. Dalloway, Out of Africa, or All the King's Men next. I just can't decide yet.

I am actually reading A Game of Thrones! I'm just getting started with it, pg 130 at the moment, but its really grabbed me. I've been trying to alternate fiction & non-fiction so I finished Bonk and moved on to George R. R. Martin.
