Last year I read 158 books but still managed to fall just shy of my "create your own challenge" mark by finishing only 36/40 from my owned-and-unread shelf. This was due entirely to my torrid affair with the public library.

To combat that fact, because I know 2011 will likely shake down similarly, I’m going to try a different approach and set forth two separate challenges for myself that when worked together, will effectively eliminate the number of books collecting dust in my basement, decrease the number of books collecting virtual dust on my to-read shelf all while simultaneously permitting me to carry-on with my main squeeze, the library.

I crashed and burned on the challenge I set myself last year. But one of my New Years Resolutions for 2011 is to join the local book club (I have to get out of the house and meet people!!), which meets on the first tuesday of each month. So my challenge for 2011 is to read the book each month (and attend the meeting)!

January - An Evening of Long Goodbyes by Paul Murray - 31st January
February - Independent People by Halldór Laxness
March - The Glass Room by Simon Mawer
April - The Hare with Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance by Edmund de Waal
May - Room by Emma Donoghue

I attended the meeting on the 4th January which discussed The Winter Ghosts by Kate Mosse. The general feeling was disappointment and I really have no desire to run out and read anymore of her books. It was a very quick read though, as it was more of a novella than a novel.

Finished the book for tomorrows meeting - it's not something I would normally read and it was OK, a bit weird - if you like wacky Irish families.

They're both 5-star reads for me. It Happened One Autumn is typical Lisa Kleypas, while At the Bride Hunt Ball was funny and refreshing. I would highly recommend both books.
