Leigh K Cunningham My latest title, Being Anti-Social has just won a gold medal at the 2012 Readers Favorite book awards for Chick Lit. Just returned home from three weeks in Africa to this news which has helped with the post-holiday blues...a little - still wondering why my office chair/desk set-up which was always so comfortable seems designed for someone else now!

Regards
Leigh

Congratulations! Should chase the blues away...:)

Tracey, mea maxima culpa! I've been frantically foraging the archives on my two devices in an effort to disinter the partial review I drafted more than a month ago, and then grew amnestic about. Chalk it up to my extreme antiquity and incipient senility, please. I'm in more regular contact with Margaret, and so less inclined to forget where I've left my head and various limbs -- and book reviews.

Let me reiterate, for the public record, that I think you have a knack for crafting an engaging story that compels page-turning... not second to that of Stephen King, and that I thought Erich's Plea was just immensely entertaining from the moment of Karel's transmogrification onward. I'll have a second stab at applying the British Museum Algorithm to find my earlier, incomplete review, but if it doesn't turn up imminently, I'll write a second one from scratch! Truly sorry, and thanks for reminding me. (In the interim, I'm just going to insert the preceding statement as a placeholder. I've already given your book five stars.)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Thanks Mark and there really is no pressure, despite my somewhat cheeky reminder ;) I'm just glad that you enjoyed the book and hope you find the sequels, Ursula's Questand Slade's Destiny equally enjoyable. [Personally I think each novel is slightly better than the previous].

Finally, after much angst, scratching, scrambling and sheer bloody-mindedness, I think I've pulled together a coherent and engaging 5000 word introduction piece to my Masters thesis. Given how truly awful my first draft turned out to be I honestly wasn't sure I could deliver something of any value on Monday for assessment. However, if dogged determination is worth anything then I should at least get a pass... I hope :)

Felicitations on completing the introduction to your master's thesis, which I think represents 90% of the psychological burden of writing a thesis, since it constitutes a sort of existence proof. :) Your committee ought actually to be grateful to have a thesis from someone who can write entertainingly and compellingly. Most theses induce instant narcosis. :)

message 6609: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Well I certainly hope my thesis doesn't induce narcosis... my mentor Rick [head of the Religious Dept at UQ] thinks my conclusions are a little on the controversial side so that should keep them awake ;)

Aaah Socrates... one of my personal favourites. Who coined the famous quote [now sadly misused] 'Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives'.

I sometimes think that would have been a wonderful time to be alive - providing of course I was born 'correctly' ;)

Terribly sad to hear the news about Bryce Courtenay. I actually bumped into him once when I was holidaying in Fiji - you could not find a more gracious or courteous individual. We actually had a drink together and he very politely listened to my aspirations as a writer and offered real encouragement. His like will not be forgotten.

Well, if you genuinely yearn to live in a misogynistic, class-obsessed society in which masses of people are reduced to effective servitude whilst cretinous philosophical shills babble apologetics for the appallingly inhuman behavior of kakistocrats... um, move here. :)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Mark I adore your vocabulary. Even if I do sometimes have to read it twice lol :)

BTW speaking of great authors with little time to live does anyone know anything about Terry Pratchett? I believe he was diagnosed with Alzeheimers some time ago but I haven't heard anything since? Not that alzeheimers is life threatening of course although tragically it will almost certainly bring an end to his wonderful writing career.

Margaret Sharp (margaretlynettesharp) | 1215 comments I've been sick for weeks with the flu and other bugs, so it was a real ray of sunshine for my Wordpress blog margaretlynettesharp to be nominated for The Sunshine Award!! All I had to do was answer eight interesting questions, and list ten worthy nominees: most of whom have expressed delight! A bonus is the huge upswing in visitors over the last few days!
So, a big thanks to Australian writer Emily Wheeler for my nomination.:)
