Mark Hi, Brenda! I'm around the bend. :) Nothing new in that regard, though. :) Looks as though Emily's around, too -- though seized by an inexplicable compulsion to do cleaning. Emily, no! Just get your modem. There is no defeating entropy, in any case, and the dust bunnies will just be angrier when they come back.

Sorry to hear that Mark;P And I agree...NO Emily!! The weather is too lovely to be doing that:)

message 6503: by Mark (new)

Mark So, Brenda, what's happening in your neck of the internet? I checked the Australia page on Google news, and inexplicably, the top story seemed to be about Ecuador, so I'm thinking, perhaps not too much?

message 6504: by Mark (new)

Mark Yes, the sun beckons! We haven't even got one here, so seize the day. Enraged dust bunnies are nothing to fool around with.

Just the usual...pollies arguing about one thing or another...the weather is beautiful, lovely winter's day, the grandkids need babysitting...lol

message 6507: by Mark (new)

Mark When they print the Australian translation of Sonnet 18, does it come out, "Shall I compare thee to a winter's day?" Your weather *should* be cold this time of year, though, shouldn't it? I'm just assuming, 'cause it's 200 degrees here in Texas, but then, global warming may have thrown my calculations off. Anyway, I'm glad you're having a lovely day, and envy you the grandkids to babysit.

Yes, it is winter at the moment, and yes it's supposed to be cold! But our glorious winters days, today being 23c with the overnight temp being about 6 or 7..(not sure how that converts!) But I don't think we've ever had 200 here;P...well over 100 though!

Mark Brenda wrote: "Yes, it is winter at the moment, and yes it's supposed to be cold! But our glorious winters days, today being 23c with the overnight temp being about 6 or 7..(not sure how that converts!) But I don..."

My internal conversion algorithm (um.. a fifth of 23, 4.6, times 9, 41.4, and add 32) yields 73.4° F, which actually is pretty delightful. I do (you'd never have discerned it) tend to exaggerate slightly. I doubt if it was much more than 198 today, here in the Yellow Rose State.

message 6510: by Mark (new)

Mark Of course, the overnight 6=42.8 I might not envy, but really not too bad, overall.

message 6511: by Brenda, Aussie Authors Queen (new)

Brenda | 80168 comments Mod
LOL!!! No, I can't believe you exaggerate at all Mark!!! I would have to google that conversion;P But pretty nice, all in all:)

Seeing as it's night over there, is it much cooler than your 198 at the moment?;P

Mark Brenda wrote: "Seeing as it's night over there, is it much cooler than your 198 at the moment?;P"

It's actually 82 (28 C.), if I have to be honest about it. I don't generally engage the A/C at anything below 81, so it hasn't helped much. Some say the world will end in fire, others say in Texas. :)

That isn't a bad temp! We have 27 in Brisbane today, and again forecast for tomorrow...gorgeous:) My brother is up there, and he loves the Q'ld weather, whereas I think it's too hot for me (in the summer!)

I think it's a perfectly fine daytime temperature. By the time midday rolls around here, though, it'll probably be in the 100's again. I'd move to Australia in a New York nanosecond. (Of course, given the opportunity, I'd probably also move to Ganymede.) :)

It's be too hot for me too Brenda. No attraction with Queensland for me.I was in Brisbane one year as presenter of writing workshop and talks in May and temps were over 30 each day. Too much for me.

Mark Brenda wrote: "Well, you're most welcome over here:) Your winter temps would be very low too wouldn't they?"

Thanks, Brenda, though I don't think I'd be wanted as an immigrant (too
decrepit, and devoid of general usefulness: )). The coldest month of the year in San Antonio is January, and the average temperature for this past January was 56.2 (13.4 C).

Mark Brenda wrote: "Oooh bit chilly! Sounds like you have the terrible extremes in temps as North Q'ld and WA have:("

Didn't actually think an average of 13.2 (which includes nighttime temps.) was all that chilly. The average for January has gone up seven degrees since 2001, and 12.1 degrees (Fahrenheit units) since 1977. Not that there's global warming, or anything. :)

Dale - you should move here! You'd absolutely love it for at least two days a year. (Of course, the rest of the time you'd have to hide in a refrigerator, but I've heard that freon is actually sort of pleasant as a room scent.)

Silly water molecules, prone to condense for no good reason. I hope you are spared a downpour, though we could actually use one, I think. Perhaps you can nudge the clouds east a ways... or west. Same distance.

Haha!! We've had a lovely couple of days, but it's going to be horrible over the weekend...strong winds have already hit, up to 100km/hr and it's going to be icy, with snow (not here thank goodness) and rain. Lovely for the sport and so on:(

Love this by Salwa Samra.......(-:

The Poet - a peculiar breed?
The Poet - a thorn to the side of the standard writer?
The Poet - a shaker of the black and white, rather a crusader of the grey?

Poets are a breed of their own, many have been touched or angered by Poets. They are not your run of the mill writer. They tend to view things in a different light. A light that exasperates some, while encourages others.
The Poet is somewhat akin to the Scientist. Poets, like to dissect their subject matter, analyse it, study it, understand it, get to know it and at times desire to prove it, in and through the words Poets prose.
Like the Scientist, the Poet desires knowledge attained through study or practice, knowledge covering general truths of the operation of general laws, especially as obtained and tested through scientific method concerned with the physical world. The only difference is Poets use their words to do it, and they search deeper from that physical world. Sound odd to you, have a closer look at the two?
The Poet like the Scientist does an enormous amount of research too on their subject matter, not to mention observation, which enables them to come to the conclusion of their study.

G'day all, does anyone know of a good Australian dictionary, I'm having a bit of trouble with an American on another site, as we know the way they syllable count Aussie words can be very different to the way we do, I have always pronounced "Australian" aus-tra-li-an, 4 sylables with the stress on "tra" & "an" & as refered to by some of Australias greatest bush poets, not 3 syllables as the American online syllable counters do.

message 6550: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you Jess, I've had a 50 - 50 response on this from other sites, writers & poets & I think I will stick to my guns with 4 syllables, I also think of our patriotic song.......

We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come
We share a dream and sing with one voice:
I am, you are, we are Aus-tra-li-an
