Did you google it David? I was going to do that, but got tied up with guests... I tend to agree with you with the way you have it set out there, though.

Yes I did that as well, trouble is I could not find an Australian syllable counter, they are either American or British.

What an extremely intelligent, and funny, man! He spoke for an hour and it was very enjoyable, listening to him talk! He's written about 45 books over his career..

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments Hi everyone,
Finally back from my surprise vacation. Robbie took me up to Tamborine Mountain for a few days of R & R and then we hit the Sunshine Coast for some beach time with the dogs. It was a wonderful break but it's good to be back and back at work. I'll pop in again soon,
Cheers,
Trace

To find one poem within a book, that overwhelmingly moves you, is worth the total purchase of the said book.

Hope everyone's weekend has been great. Mine however has been a bit busy.

I've applied for a part-time job, distributing catalogues.
I've retried swimming after 4/5 years.

The good thing is that I'm having an Alfred Hitchcock marathon. My mum owns nearly all the movies so I been sitting on the lounge since 4.00pm. Before today I had only ever seen Psycho and Rebecca. Today I've watched: Shadow of a Doubt, Rope and Rear Window.

Lots of great interests there, Mickey! I love swimming, and have been a member of a local club for over thirty years. What a good way to get/keep fit!
Hitchcock is such a master of suspense!
What a weekend.:)

It was fine, the pool was indoor and had heating. I love the Hitchcock movies. Haven't seen enough to say which one's my favourite.

message 6568: by Tracey (new)

Tracey Alley (traceya) | 485 comments I've always thought it was quite ironic that I grew up in a beachside community and yet I never learned how to swim until I was 26 when I was eventually taught by my younger sister. As I'd like to try scuba diving I'll have to do some work to increase my skills but hopefully Robbie can help with that as he's an excellent swimmer.

I've got some major spring cleaning to do around the house/garden. I've been badly neglectful of household chores lately and they keep piling up.

Mickey it sounds like you're having a ball - I love Hitchcock myself. I don't really think we have a director around who can really match him.

For example I love Andrew Lansdown's poetry(Aussie poet) but my absolute favourite poem is Boat which is in his books Fontanelle and also Far from Home.It is a poem others respond well to, when I have used it in writing workshops I have conducted. Both the Lansdown books are on my bookshelf of read books.

message 6585: by Mark (new)

Mark Here are the particulars I found on Wikipedia. Seems par for the course for the relentlessly predatory, human-hostile economy:

It was privately owned by the Beattie family, and was the largest privately owned confectionery manufacturer in Australia. It was established as a company in 1927, named after the owner's youngest child, Darrell Bernard Lea, born earlier that year. Darrell Lea had 81 privately owned outlets and 1,838 outlets that are owned by independent contractors. In July 2012 the company was put into administration and restructured. In September 2012 it was sold to the Quinn family. Further retructuring, including elimination of the majority of permanent jobs, and the closure of all company owned retail outlets are planned.During peak times, Darrell Lea employed at least 1200 people.

Wow, thanks for that information Mark! I was totally unaware of all of that...just knew the products were delicious:) My hubby is a big fan of their licorice:)

Mark Supposedly, they sell their products worldwide, but I've literally never seen the name "Darrell Lea" in the United States. If you'd told me they manufactured baby buggies for elephants, I'd have had no reason to doubt it. What bugs me is not so much the loss of their yummy chocolate (which I've never had), as the way their rabid elimination of 1200 jobs is of a piece with overall corporate trends. Any business that persists in providing employment to people will be purchased by some other business determined to outsource employment to people making a dime a year in penal colonies on the moon. But I'm a politically cranky nutcase, so it would be as well to ignore everything I say. :)

Increasingly, our society sees the bottom line in dollars and cents, and forgets about all the people that get hurt along the way. Ron and I frequently visited their Roselands outlet: it was a beautiful little shop, and the staff was friendly and obliging. You had choices there that are never going to be repeated by the proposed outlets at supermarkets.

A great, well deserved review Margaret - I really must grab a copy myself.

Very sad to read of the death of Michael Clarke Duncan. As has been said he was a truly great character actor. It's tragic how often Hollywood loses one of their own to early deaths. Makes you wonder if fame is all it's cracked up to be.

On other news I've been buried in books and writing lately for Uni. I have to hand in the first 5000 words of my thesis this coming Monday. I've done the first draft, finally, but it needs a lot of polishing. Oh well, my Mother always told me that my curiosity would get me in trouble one day lol.

Hope everyone is well and I'll check in again soon :)

BTW Mark - where's my review? Huh? [Just kidding ;) ]
