Awesome :)
I'll have to check out Amelia Peabody too!

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Barb wrote: "LOL I think that may be the first time I've been thanked for adding more books to someone's TBR list :)"

Bwahahaha! Well, it is a series that I never intended to stop reading, so we won't think of it as piling on, just readjusting the stack, LOL.

@ Dorothy -- I'd never heard of The Interestings but your comment that it wasn't interesting to you made me snort. The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II looks intriguing. I will see if my library carries that one. I have the Louise Penny series on my TBR. I just discovered her a few days ago when i accidentally clicked on Amazon Canada to look at their best selling mysteries. I fell in love with her book covers so I read the synopsis of her series and it sounded good. Library has most of them, too! So, yet another series added to the already-bloated list, lol.

@ Karen - I love that the library ranks so highly in your life. I'd say it's probably the same for me. I am so joyful of the fact that my local branch is half a mile away so I can walk there for exercise! Teresa's Library: Exercising Body and Mind Since 2001, LOL.

@ Alycia - I have only read the first Amelia Peabody book but I plan to continue with the rest of the series. I also want to check out the Enola Holmes series.

Barb Karen wrote: "Barb - I love the Flavia deLuce series. If you enjoy it, Enola Holmes is another one to try :) "

I really like the Flavia books too, so I'll have to look for Enola Holmes.

@ Alycia - Like Teresa, I've read the first of the Amelia Peabody books, but I liked it enough to read more.

@ Karen and Teresa - My library is not only the source of most of my books, but it's where I work :)

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Yes, yes, Barb - rub it in that you work at the library, LOL! I would love to. My little local branch is so friendly and fun to visit. It's actually our children's library but of course they house some adult books, plus we have many of our books sent over from the main branch that is downtown. (Too annoying to drive to).

message 955: by Barb (new)

Barb Sorry Teresa LOL

message 956: by Alycia (new)

Alycia (bookhound18) Barb- Don't you love working at a library? I worked at a library until I decided to stay home with my baby girl. When my kids get to be old enough, I plan on going back to work for a library. It's wonderful. :)

message 957: by Dorothy (new)

Dorothy (dbell1) Teresa - I stumbled upon the Penny books by accident - saw the cover for "A Beautiful Mystery" in a NYT book review ad and decided to try it. Mentioned it on another book thread I'm on and people raved about her writing. I can see why - she's really good and I'm bummed I never read her work before. My library only has the first 2 in LARGE PRINT - I felt like I needed a white cane and a dog. :D If my teen son sees them, I'll be mocked as being too old...

Glad to add to someone's reading list - I have guilt over the books on my 'to be read shelf' and the Kindle books I've never touched.

I did a trial subscription to the New York Times and their book review magazine has majorly increased my 'to be read' list. I try to avoid their reviews of what I want to read - we have differing opinions... :D

I really do love working there, it's so much fun to talk to people about *books all day long :) Even though I spend most of my time in the children's department, I still get to see and talk about grown-up books more often than you'd think.

We take it almost as a personal challenge to find just the right book for a kid who has to read "a book from a series" for school, and it's a huge rush when they come back later and say "thanks so much, I LOVED that book! Do you have more like it?" IMO, *that is even better than finding a new book to add to my own TBR list :)

message 959: by Alycia (new)

Alycia (bookhound18) Barb- I so agree! I loved helping patrons find books they would/did enjoy. :)

I put a hold on that too, but I waited too long and have a decent wait list. (Though not as long as Gone Girl! lol) I'm hoping to get it some time in August. I'm also on a fairly long wait list for The Ocean at the End of the Lane, which I am also hoping to have in August.

message 961: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments Two of my holds should be available for pick up this week! Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter and World War Z An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks . Hope I have time to finish them both. I may have to return Let's Pretend This Never Happened A Mostly True Memoir by Jenny Lawson before I have a chance to get to it. Good thing I can always take it out again another time.

The Thirteenth Tale is one of my favorite reads, Christine! It's a book about books which is always a hit to me. :)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Was able to pick up the audio version of The English Girl (Gabriel Allon, #13) by Daniel Silva and was happy to find out that the narrator is a fave of mine, George Giulland. Also picked up Unleashed by David Rosenfeld and NOS4A2 by Joe Hill by Joe Hill.

I also have 4 other titles here as well as 5 audiotapes. If I only had the time.....

I keep being recommended The 13th tale. I'd love to know how you find it. Also, Quiet is a book I am quite intrigued by!

Christine (inhalesbookslikepopcorn) | 1052 comments @Karen:

I loved The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield :) I've always been a books about books fanatic & this one has enough mystery/suspense character. I almost read it in one sitting, had to put it down for getting sleep though. A lot of friends have recommended Quiet The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain to me, therefore I will read it finally in August.

message 972: by Barb (last edited Jul 28, 2013 09:52AM) (new)

Barb I had quite a few library holds come in this week, in addition to the books I still have checked out from last week:

The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Cafe by Mary Simses    Not the Killing Type (A Booktown Mystery, #7) by Lorna Barrett    William Shakespeare's Star Wars by Ian Doescher    Dogtripping by David Rosenfelt    Sand Castle Bay (Ocean Breeze, #1) by Sherryl Woods    Grand Central How a Train Station Transformed America by Sam Roberts    The Art Forger by B.A. Shapiro    The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag (Flavia de Luce, #2) by Alan Bradley    Mama Gets Hitched (A Mace Bauer Mystery #3) by Deborah Sharp A Dog's Journey by W. Bruce Cameron

I started William Shakespeare's Star Wars last night, and it's a really fun read. If you're a Star Wars fan, I highly recommend it :)

message 973: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments Wow Barb! Do you read them all at once or one at a time? You have some interesting books there. I'd love to know what you think of The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Cafe when you get around to it.

message 974: by Barb (new)

Barb I usually read only one at a time, but sometimes I'll read a fiction and a non-fiction at the same time.

I'll admit, I picked up the Blueberry Cafe book simply based on the cover. It looks good enough to eat :)

@Kristie and Barb - I agree that book stuck out to me too! lol! You'll have to let us know if it really was "irresistible" to read! :)

lol Barb - expectations are on your shoulders! ;)

@Nancy - I get 95% of my books from the library and I will only buy a "physical" book if I really love it and want the hardcover (Like A Monster Calls) and then I buy through book depository as I find them cheaper and no shipping costs. Otherwise if I *really* want to read a book, or I need it for a RL book club and can't get it at the library then I just buy them on my kindle.
I find the library is good for pretty much everything though, very lucky that way

Here's a question for those that use this thread....

There are 3 discussion threads under "your books" for
- Your Latest Library request(s)/checkout(s)
- What are you reading AND what do you think?
- Your latest book purchase

I think these 3 threads all aim to have us discuss current books, but having them seperate seems to make conversations a bit fragmented. We were thinking of archiving these and just creating one thread as a "what are you reading now"/ book talk kind of thread?

Thoughts?

message 981: by Barb (new)

Barb I kind of like having a separate place for us library lovers to chat, and I definitely like having a smaller group of folks posting here. If it was all combined into one thread, I think it would be easier for a post to get lost. In addition, this particular thread isn't necessarily about what we're *reading right now, but about what we HOPE to read in the upcoming weeks -- at least, that's the way it works in my case :)

Jessica (Goldenfurpro) (goldenfurproductions) | 396 comments I feel like i'm interrupting the conversation but here are all of the books I have checked out right now:
So Close to You (So Close to You, #1) by Rachel Carter Wake (Watersong #1) by Amanda Hocking Solstice by P.J. Hoover Insignia (Insignia, #1) by S.J. Kincaid Vortex (Insignia, #2) by S.J. Kincaid Glimmer by Phoebe Kitanidis Starling (Starling, #1) by Lesley Livingston In the After (In the After #1) by Demitria Lunetta Unraveling (Unraveling, #1) by Elizabeth Norris Unbreakable (Unraveling, #2) by Elizabeth Norris Torn (Torn Trilogy, #1) by Erica O'Rourke Belladonna (Secrets of the Eternal Rose, #2) by Fiona Paul The Throne of Fire (Kane Chronicles, #2) by Rick Riordan Wicked Kiss (Nightwatchers, #2) by Michelle Rowen The Shadow Society by Marie Rutkoski Star Cursed (The Cahill Witch Chronicles, #2) by Jessica Spotswood Born Wicked (The Cahill Witch Chronicles, #1) by Jessica Spotswood Rebel Heart (Dust Lands, #2) by Moira Young

I admit, I might've went a little bit crazy, but some of these are books i'm going to re-read (to refresh my memory for the sequel)...

message 983: by Christine (new)

Christine (inhalesbookslikepopcorn) | 1052 comments @Karen: I've only discovered recently that there are different threads :) The books I get from the library or buy (some books I buy now I might read a couple of months later ...) are not automatically the ones I read next, therefore I welcome different threads for those. Otherwise as long as GR doesnt fail to send notifications I dont miss any posts :)

This is how I feel, as well. Took the words right off my keyboard, Barb, hehe!

message 986: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I second all of your messages about keeping the threads separate. The main idea of all of these groups and folders is to discuss books and how they influence our lives. But I do enjoy reading about the buying, reading, finishing and taking or rseserving from the library under their own headings.

Whoa, that is a nice pile of books, Jessica!! Love it. I've never heard of most of them but the covers are nice. Must refrain from looking over them all because my TBR mountain is high enough as it is...but what if you have something that sounds really good and I miss out?? Hehe!

I know what you mean, Storm! I usually sit here at the keyboard looking at my library's database to see if books I want are available there but rarely do I just go in and browse the shelves. I get into more trouble that way! I especially get sucked into the New Releases sections... have to pull out the pad and pen and write down titles for 'next time', LOL.

message 989: by Barb (new)

Barb ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) wrote: " I especially get sucked into the New Releases sections... have to pull out the pad and pen and write down titles for 'next time', LOL"

Our library system's website allows us to create "My List" -- for books we want to read eventually, but aren't ready to request right now. I've learned that each account can have up to 20 lists, with up to 100 books on each list :)

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments I have a "my list" thing, too but I always forget about it so I just write stuff down if I see it at the library and then I come to GR to add to my mountain. I like GR's format better.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.
I wonder if we combine this thread and "Your latest book purchase" into one? Then you have one thread for "books I intend to read" and one that is "currently reading". Thoughts?

message 992: by Dorothy (new)

Dorothy (dbell1) My local library is horrible about getting holds to the next person in line. I'm #1 for 10 books, some of which have been 'out' for over 3 months. So, I joined a library near work that's part of an inter-library loan group. I've died and gone to heaven!

Currently have Say You're Sorry The Golem and the Jinni The Brutal Telling and A Rule Against Murder. Read another 4 this weekend. Life is good on my shelf!

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments It feels kind of nice to just focus on the library in this thread because there are so few threads ever dedicated to libraries and that's where the majority of my books come from. Of course, if others are fine with merging the "bought" and "library loans" threads, I'd be fine with that. I'm just afraid our library babble might get lost in the other thread. However, it doesn't look like the "purchased books" thread is super active, either, so my fears could prove to be unfounded.

Barb Dorothy wrote: "My local library is horrible about getting holds to the next person in line. I'm #1 for 10 books, some of which have been 'out' for over 3 months."

If your library is part of a library system, it might work the same way ours does: When you sign up for a card, we ask you to choose a "home" library from among the eight in our system. When holds are filled, the books go to the first person on the list whose home library is the library that owns that particular copy of the book. Say, for example, I am #1 on the list for W is for Wasted, and libraries A and B have bought copies but my library, library C, hasn't. When library A's copy is returned, it will go to the first library A patron on the list, even if that patron is #12.

It's a real pain when you're waiting for a book that your library hasn't bought, but when it works out in your favor, that seems to make up for the waiting for other books :)
