Abigail (ammcginley) Picked up Day One from the library last week, after a week of waiting to get it from another library. Got maybe forty to fifty pages in and realized that it was really not for me. Oh well. Usually I give it my all with one I get from another library.

message 1110: by Storm (new)

Storm The Millionaire and the Mummies Theodore Davis's Gilded Age in Egypt by John M. Adams

This... This book... This is not a book. This is INSANITY in book form! I'm on page 105 right now, about half way through chapter three, and guess what? We finally get to the SUBJECT of chapter one! Who fell asleep on the job with this book?!?!?!

Yes it's a Biography, I get that, but you put that kind of title and cover on it and you get people like me thinking 'oh it's about the part of his life in Egypt, cool! None of the other stuff I'm not interested in!'

WRONG.

Not only do you get the Whoooooole life story, but it's so BADLY out of order and doesn't cover the topics in the FREAKING CHAPTER TITLES save for one line in passing in the case of chapter two, but you get parts of life stories about OTHER PEOPLE to one degree or another. I don't care this guy's Mom had to deal with the death of a Baby girl and her husband by the time he was 4, and later another son! I don't care about his 'cousin' losing her two of her own children, I CARE ABOUT WHAT THE BOOK IS SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT.

Nothing personal against the Dude, The writer the editor, the publisher or anyone else associated with this book but COME ON. If your gonna do something like this, DO. IT. RIGHT. Not this crazy mess! GAH! X.x; If it weren't for the 'One Million Pages' Challenge, I'd return this to the library right now. If your interested in Egypt or this particular person, look elsewhere and save your sanity.

Kristie | 3595 comments I just picked up The Graveyard Book on audio and Welcome to the Jungle, which is my first graphic novel. (I read a couple comics as a kid, but not many and those were very different!) I went to look at The Dresden Files and they have a list of the correct reading order of all his books and this one was listed before Storm Front, so I thought I'd check it out. In the beginning of the book Jim Butcher says that he always saw The Dresden Files as a graphic novel and sees the panels in his mind while writing his books. I thought that was so interesting! I love those little tidbits. :)

I deliberately did not check out the reviews before starting it. It was really hyped when it came out. I am about 100 pages in and like it so far, only 500 more to go *lol* It reminds me of a travelogue for island hopping but in this case they are planets :)

I did not know there was a movie, good to know now. I maybe will check it out. I am not much into movies though. :) It was on the display shelves at the library. I picked it up because the summary said something like "for book lovers & japan lovers" and it found its way magically fast in my bag :) I will let you know when I am finished ...

Yay! I think seasonal reading is always the best and I'm really looking forward to reading everything I've picked up from this trip. I'm hoping that these books will help me get out of this inexplicable reading slump I've been in.

I have finished Hedgehog a few days ago and liked it. The final part was a bit dragging though. I can see why it would work out well as a movie.

Today I am picking up
The Princess Bride by William Goldman
for our buddy read next week and also
Next by Michael Crichton
which is coming up as a BOM.

I then have to go to a different library who seem to have
Allegiant (Divergent, #3) by Veronica Roth
available. They charge $1.50 to reserve books (so no-one ever does!) so I am going to race over there at opening time and hope I beat everyone else ;)

I have Stiff on audio too Sarah. Hopefully it is ok (I haven't started it yet). I wonder if Tina Fey narrates her own book? That would make it better I think as I found it fell a bit flat (and I am a big fan)

I just started
Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey
on audio which is a popular book here and has won lots of awards and I have had a few friends recommend it. So far it reminds me a lot of Melina Marchetta's style of writing. It is strange going back to an Austraian narration after listening to so many American ones recently I must say!

I also just started UnSouled (Unwind, #3) by Neal Shusterman which is the last in the trilogy and I'm already sucked in after just a few chapters!

message 1149: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments Karen, I'll definitely try to read that then, after I finish Jellicoe Way (after I start it...) I love Melina's writing.

I nominated Finnikin of the Rock for the March BOM because I'm interested to see her write in a different genre. If it doesn't win I'll be getting it from the library on audio soon :)
