Jessica-Robyn | 69 comments I just went to the library for the first time in over a month. I've been so busy with school reading even the tinest bit was completely off the table. But I have returned! triumphant!

Check Out:
The Diviners (The Diviners, #1) by Libba Bray Unspoken (The Lynburn Legacy, #1) by Sarah Rees Brennan Burn for Burn (Burn for Burn, #1) by Jenny Han Shooting Stars by Allison Rushby The Door by Margaret Atwood Dingo (Newford #22) by Charles de Lint

All of these books have been on my to-read list for months now. I'm so excited to finally do some reading! The only question is... where should I start?

message 861: by Barb (new)

Barb A lot of my hold requests have come in for me in the past few days. Today I picked up:

Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan    The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe    Man in the Blue Moon by Michael Morris    The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling    The Racketeer by John Grisham    The Pawn (The Patrick Bowers Files, #1) by Steven James    Blood Orange Brewing (A Tea Shop Mystery, #7) by Laura Childs    Instruments of Darkness (Crowther and Westerman, #1) by Imogen Robertson    Goldberg Variations A Novel by Susan Isaacs

I've got to prioritize and figure out which ones I'm really likely to read in the next two weeks!

message 862: by Jessica-Robyn (last edited Oct 18, 2012 04:07AM) (new)

Jessica-Robyn | 69 comments Tori, I hope you enjoy The Book Thief. I'm been meaning to read that book for years. :)

And Barb, what an incredibly haul! I'm adding Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore and The End of Your Life Book Club to my list right now.

message 863: by Barb (new)

Barb I'm really enjoying Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, and I have to read The Pawn for this month's F2F book club. I've not heard many *good reviews of The Casual Vacancy, but I'm going to give it a shot.

Jessica-Robyn, I highly recommend The Book Thief. I read it several years ago and parts of it still come back to me now and then.

I've got The Casual Vacancy on hold right now and your right I've seen a lot of mixed reviews, but I'm still looking forward to seeing what it's like.

The Book Thief is one of those titles that I know it's going to be good, I know I'm going to enjoy it, but it's been sitting on my list for so long that I'm just avoiding it now because of my expectations. However, it is going to get read... in 2013.

message 865: by Sashana (new)

Sashana I checked out The Casual Vacancy but I'm not in the mood to read it yet. Will try to tackle it this weekend though.

Yep, I've got to at least read a bit of it to see for myself. I've loved books that others have hated, and vice versa, so who knows? LOL

Jex (jexball) | 2227 comments Just picked up Alice in Zombieland (White Rabbit Chronicles, #1) by Gena Showalter . Can't wait to read it!

Barb Jessica-Robyn wrote: " I'm adding Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore"

I had to come back and let you know that I really liked this one! I very rarely give 5-star ratings to a book, but this one came very, very close :) Lots of quirky characters, a bit of a mystery (but not in the traditional sense), a secret society -- and all of it centering on books!

I had no idea the options in your library were so poor. I take it for granted that I can get almost any book I want from my local library.

message 871: by Chelsea (last edited Oct 24, 2012 05:59AM) (new)

Chelsea (chelseaanne) These are the books that I have checked out from my local library to read:

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Chelsea "Annie" wrote: I had no idea the options in your library were so poor. I take it for granted that I can get almost any book I want from my local library."

really, really poor options. If we want to read a book, 90% of the times either we buy it or we borrow it. I've started to read in English instead of Portuguese because of that. As much I want to contribute to national economy or to the book industry, the truth is that it is cheaper to buy it online than from the bookstore.
For example, fifty shades of grey - I picked this one, because the hype finally arrived to Portugal, costs, special price, 15.93€, while on bookdepository, it costs 8.48 - ok, so it has to have some difference due to the translation costs... but bookdepository doesn't have delivery costs... so the price of the book has to include them...

So, no good library options and high priced books, it's a miracle that some people still develop reading habits this days.

You have to be commended for your dedication as a young person. Actually, it is the young people, historically, who actually bring lasting changes in society when needed.

It would be so nice if people here in the USA knew what others go through to be able to read what they want in their language since many don't appreciate libraries and take so much for granted.

I am glad you are here in Goodreads and can share with other who also love to read.
