How can they not have Insurgent, I think it's the second most popular book on GR for 2012. (At least as of today) Tell me they have the #1 book, The Fault in Our Stars. I think a library should have to have books people actually want to read.

message 805: by Sashana (new)

Sashana They don't have The Fault in Our Stars, just checked.

message 806: by Jessica-Robyn (new)

Jessica-Robyn | 69 comments Sashana wrote: "They don't have The Fault in Our Stars, just checked."

That boggles my mind. It's one thing to ignore popular reading choices for a certain genre, but that also tells me they don't refer to bestseller lists, like the New York Times. I mean, that seems like it should be a standard.

message 807: by Sashana (new)

Sashana They do have bestsellers...for adults :(

message 808: by Jessica-Robyn (new)

Jessica-Robyn | 69 comments But. it. gah! Just talking about The Fault in Our Stars, it's has been on the NYT list for 15 weeks. You have to really be purposely not buying YA to ignore that. If I lived in your area, we would totally be storming that castle together!

message 809: by Sashana (new)

Sashana *tear* I think the problem is that I'm storming the castle by myself. I've talked to my librarians twice about it so hopefully they'll take my suggestions seriously. Bitterblue is the only YA that they have published in 2012.

message 810: by Laura (new)

Laura (lglovett) | 1444 comments Have you talked to them from a literacy stand point? One could argue that if they don't have books that YA are interested in then they are not promoting literacy in the best way possible. Kids won't read if they aren't interested in the offering.

Shay | 923 comments Laura wrote: "Have you talked to them from a literacy stand point? One could argue that if they don't have books that YA are interested in then they are not promoting literacy in the best way possible. Kids won'..."

I agree. The most important function of a library is to promote literacy in kids. That's why I get furious when the library orders 50 copies of a DVD and 10 copies of a popular children's/YA book. A library is not a Blockbuster for adults. If an adult wants a movie- go and rent it or get a Netflix account. Our library used to order 300+ copies of popular children's books, now it's maybe 30-50. But, they keep on buying DVD's.

message 813: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Yes, I noticed, when our library got remodeled, the DVD section really expanded.

message 814: by Dessa O'Dette (new)

Dessa O'Dette | 20 comments Yeah I'm pretty sure that I went a little hog-wild but there were so many books and pretty covers with interesting names and I couldn't help myself...~bows head in pretend shame with a smart-ass grin on her face~

Faux Finished
Decorated to Death
The Snow Child
Hex Hall
Wicked Girls
The Messenger of Athens
The First Annual Grand Prairie Rabbit Festival
Slaughterhouse-Five
These Boots Weren't Made for Walking

I will try that angle.

message 816: by Sashana (new)

Sashana A reply from mu library:

"We thank you for the suggestion and will use it wisely. Sadly, due to budget constraints, our purchasing of YA titles has been a bit behind. We are working on getting some new titles into our system shortly. Please check back with us over the summer."

message 817: by Dani (new)

Dani (dani_duda25) | 26 comments Just got back from the library and this is what I got:
Katie's Way by Marta Perry
Pretty Little Secrets by Sara Shepard
Four to Score (Stephanie Plum, #4) by Janet Evanovich and
Bloodrose (Nightshade, #3) by Andrea Cremer

message 818: by Jessica-Robyn (last edited May 03, 2012 04:37PM) (new)

Jessica-Robyn | 69 comments I'm crowning myself the reigning Queen of going overboard! *SHABAM!*
Fingerprints
A Sickness In The Family
Happy Cafe, Volume 1
Fullmetal Alchemist, Vol. 1
Fruits Basket, Vol. 15
Fruits Basket, Vol. 16
Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You, Volume 4
Heads You Lose
Ninth Key
Twenties Girl: A Novel
Pride and Prejudice
Knack Cycling for Everyone: A Guide to Road, Mountain, and Commuter Biking
Yesterday's Tomorrows

Waiting for Fruits Basket, Vol. 14 to still come in before I can read the ones I've got.

Adding these to the titles I already had from my last few trips I have somewhere around 22 books to choose from and all on some sort of deadline. Although a large majority are graphic novels/manga, so it really doesn't seem all that bad, but still pretty bad, or in my case pretty good, because I now have endless selection!

Any thoughts on where should I start?

OK, my English is not as good as it should be, so let me see if I got this right, they have budget to improve the DVD's collection but not for YA books, is that it?

message 822: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Lol, Sonia. That is what it seems like they are saying without actually saying that! Just like anything else, if DVDs are checked out and more popular than YA books, they will buy more DVDs. Sadly, the world loves their movies and tecnnology over their imagination and brain!

message 823: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Well I can't talk much. Talking like a teenager: Portuguese libraries suck! I don't know how it s now, but 10 years ago, they only allowed 3 books per check-out, and the book selection was kinda meh.

Today I decided to give it another chance and hecked the online database from my city for Stieg Larsson and the hunger games, no results found.

message 824: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Wow, Sonia. That's bad. I wouldn't be able to do it! I would have to move just to have a better library. Lol.

Hehe. That is one of the main reasons I moved back home. Where I was living the library was just too small and only had about 75% of the books I wanted although for the books they did have there was never a wait list. Fort Worth has close to 90% of the books I want, but of course, longer waits. I can deal with the longer waits better than not having the book at all.
