MARTINA'S LIST - SEPTEMBER CHALLENGE - 5/10I just finished A Bite to Remember (Argeneau Vampires #5) by Lynsay Sands (★★★★). The series is vampire PNR with a twist. The "vampires" are actually Atlanteans! These books are middle of the line when it comes to intensity - they aren't super funny/witty, but neither are they terribly dark. However, that doesn't detract from the story.
In this particular book, actor, Vincent Argeneau (whom we met in the last book) is having some trouble. Someone is sabotaging all his productions. From the theater being set on fire to the leading roles having accidents, everything is going wrong.
Jackie in a private investigator hired to discover the saboteur. She's known about the vampires for years and has done enough jobs for the Argeneau's to be familiar with their quirks. However, her attraction to Vincent takes her by surprise.
I really enjoyed this particular book. As I mentioned, it's a little less witty than some, but I like Jackie and Vincent is considerably more likable in this book than he was in the previous one. I was also kept guessing whodunit until the very end and found myself surprised by the outcome. I'm looking forward to reading the next in this series.

10.Challenges Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins// Because I'm totally lame, I just picked the general 100 books in 2010, so I can actually read some books on there that I planned to read this year.
Thoughts on Deadlands Hunt by G.L. Hunter
Deadlands hunt is a very sweet story, much more than what I generally end up reading.
Amethyst's sister has been missing for 7 weeks, so she decides to go to the town where she last heard of her. Arriving in Adersol she quickly learns her sister has left for the Deadlands, and Amy realizes nor she nor anyone in her company is qualified to get them trough the Deadlands alive. So she turns to Chase and his pack of Weren.
Fighting prejudices, annoying company and orcs Chase and Amethyst slowly fall in love, but is love enough to overcome the differences of their species and upbringing?
Though there's action and some kisses and the likes, the story itself is fairly light and sweet. The attraction is more of the personality kind than of the lusty kind.
Drummonds' wordlbuilding is really intriguing, and the whole setting had a sort of Western feeling to it I quite liked. Chase is the silent thinking type, but I think he and Amethyst suited well together.
The story could have been a bit more steamier for my liking, and the ending conflict felt slightly forced, but all in all a very sweet story. And I wouldn't say no to read the story of the other packmembers either.

Well, time to use my inhaler again. I just wish we'd get a good drenching rain, followed by a good hard frost (that last is sssooo not gonna happen for at least another 1.5 or even 2 months) to kill off all the ragweed.

MARTINA'S LIST - SEPTEMBER CHALLENGE - 6/10I just finished Dime Store Magic (Women of the Otherworld #3) by Kelley Armstrong (★★★★1/2). This series is urban fantasy and seems to run the gamut of paranormal creatures. However, this particular book is all about witches & sorcerers. Two witches in particular - Paige & Savannah - who you met in the previous book.
Twenty-something Paige is caring for 15-year old Savannah after the loss of both of their mothers in the previous book. Paige has committed herself to Savannah's upbringing and teaching within the Coven to which she belongs. But, when a big name in the world of sorcery tries to claim paternity rights to Savannah, the shit hits the fan. Suddenly Paige & Savannah find themselves in the midst of allegations of Satanism, murder and more . . . with they survive the second-coming of the Salem Witch Trials when the whole town is gunning for them and the Coven has turned their back?
I was pleasantly surprised by this book! It sat on my shelf for a long time b/c it was about Paige who I REALLY didn't like in the last book. In this one she's considerably more likable and, since it IS her book, you get the inside scoop on her actions. I loved the actual storyline of this one more than the characters, though. And I loved the "hero"! A renegade sorcerer son turned geeky pro-bono lawyer. Awesome!
